HøybergoddenHoybergodden – Spelling error. Ardalazzagal (talk) 00:50, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 21:35, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Moving Høybergodden to Hoybergodden is not an uncontroversial technical request, this is not a spelling error. Høybergodden is the official name of the site. See for instance this: [1]. Oceanh (talk) 08:44, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, not a spelling error. Geschichte (talk) 12:42, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as nominator. The comments of User:Oceanh and User:Geschichte are based on a misunderstanding. Høybergodden is a mere spelling error that unfortunately made it into the statistical yearbook, which explains why it is so common. Luckily we are not obliged to repeat other people's errors.
The authority for place names on Jan Mayen is the Norwegian Polar Institute, which gives Hoybergodden as the official name. [2] The name refers to the nearby volcanic crater of Hoyberg, from the Dutch for haycock. [3] Ardalazzagal (talk) 23:10, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hoybergodden

[edit]

The claim that most reliable sources use the spelling Høybergodden is incorrect. All maps use Hoybergodden, and this is also the spelling used on the site: http://jan.mayen.no/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Varde1.jpg. For the related name Hoybergrenna, I can find no instance of Høybergrenna at all, while Hoybergskjeret is many times as common as Høybergskjeret. It is a pity that the arrogant lack of research on the part of the three other contributors to this discussion has led to the blocking of this highly necessary move. Ardalazzagal (talk) 18:40, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The name isn't well-known in English, ⟨ø⟩ is not an English letter and, in addition to that (or the other way around, actually) that letter isn't used in the Norwegian name (if OP is right). [6] uses both ⟨ø⟩ and ⟨o⟩ in the names, so it's not just a matter of simplifying ⟨ø⟩ to ⟨o⟩. Assuming that OP is right, keeping the variant with ⟨ø⟩ is just illogical.
To those who oppose the renaming: what does høybergodden (with ⟨ø⟩) mean in Norwegian? Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 09:03, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, this is silly. The fact the article has been at "Hoybergodden" on Norwegian Wikipedia since 2013 is enough reason for me to think so. @Ardalazzagal: Perhaps you should reopen the RM inviting editors at WT:Norway. Nardog (talk) 10:14, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
