The existence of this article
[edit]- @Dogsteeves: As a clearer explanation of my attempts to redirect this article, we don't have separate articles on existing topics under each of the topic's synonyms. In this case, it isn't even clear that the term has come into common use outside of the cartoon. Further, articles can't be based on WP:original research, which includes your own speculation as to terms like "step-grunkle", without evidence that anyone actually uses them. Typically I would redirect this article to great uncle, but since there isn't a separate article on that topic, and since the uncle article doesn't have a good place to make it clear to someone who searched for "grunkle" why he was led to uncle, it seems, to me, best to redirect it to Grunkle Stan. —Largo Plazo (talk) 17:21, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
Contested deletion
[edit]This article should not be speedy deleted as being about a subject that was invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally and for lack of asserted importance, because... I think alot of kid should learn this word not only from the show but know it a real word to call your Grand Uncle. I have always called them this since the show Gravity Falls came out in 2012 on the Disney channel and you don't call your Grandfather Father so why call your Grunkle Uncle. --Dogsteeves (talk) 17:44, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi again. Have you read the explanations I've already left for you above and in my edit summaries? —Largo Plazo (talk) 17:58, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- Dogsteeves, I have to agree that a redirect is the way to go on this one unless there are sources that demonstrate the term is in wide use per WP:NEO. For the record, I'm a Gravity Falls fan myself -- it's just that this article as it stands isn't in line with Wikipedia guidelines. --Non-Dropframe talk 18:05, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- Largoplazo, Will this be deleted still and if so is there anyway we are able to keep it. I really want kids to learn about this word I going to spread it in my family of course and I have already ask of the Oxford dictionary to add this word.
- Dogsteeves, Previous revisions of articles are permanently stored in the article's history which will remain in place as a redirect. Alternatively, you can copy/paste the content and save it on your own computer. --Non-Dropframe talk 18:23, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- Dogsteeves Unfortunately it isn't Wikipedia's mission to evangelize the use of new words. Even if the word was already well established, there wouldn't be a separate article for it, since there isn't anything to say about it beyond what's already said about great uncles at Uncle. If there were enough substantial material that could be written about grand uncles that would justify a separate article, that article would created under the topic Grand uncle because that would still be the main word for the concept. The term Grunkle would then redirect there. —Largo Plazo (talk) 18:34, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
