[edit]- I wonder if any mention could be made of the fact that the accent of Willie, while funny, is considered a really bad attempt at a Scottish accent (in the UK). I can't source it so I haven't added it. Magic Pickle 16:59, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Isn't it supposed to be bad? 64.231.15.248 20:42, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have removed the two references to his having a "strong" and "thick" Scottish accent. He does not; it is Americanised Scottish. Most American viewers would struggle to comprehend an authentic Scottish dialect. Epa101 (talk) 14:20, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- there is a difference between the Scottish dialect, and a strong accent. the accent has to do with the pronunciation, while a dialect includes grammatical, vocabulary and other variations. 67.176.160.47 (talk) 06:57, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
that's not what willy looks like
- The quote where Willy says the Scottish are enemies with the English, Welsh, Japanese and other Scotts, what episode is the quote by Willy taken from? Jlaforteza 06:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Should it be noted that in the episode Much Apu About Nothing it appears at the end that Willie is being deported (though apparently this doesn't last long)? LJade728 17:40, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- How can Willie be deaf? I was just watching an old episode (Radio Bart), and he could hear fine when "Timmy" called out that he'd fallen down the well. I guess Willie's hearing loss must have happened sometime after that. 64.231.15.248 20:43, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- the part which shows Willie's being killed a lot does not resemble Kenny's form Suouth PArk.
Deaf
[edit]Shouldn't it be mentioned somewhere that Willie is deaf?
- How can Willie possibly be deaf? Every episode I've ever seen him in, he can hear just fine. Also, please sign your posts. -- Elaich talk 20:39, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
--Willie's deafness was a one-episode "joke." Additionally, it should be readily obvious by now that consistency is not something one should look for in The Simpsons' universe. The continuity is repeatedly changed in order to set up a story line or even a single joke.Adiosmofo (talk) 15:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Circumcised?
[edit]I'm 99% sure the quote about Willie's parent's pool table is actually "concieved, raised and educated". If you follow the first external link on the main page they use this version rather than the "concieved, born and circumcised" as it stands on the mian page. Anyone else want to have an input here? Galvatron184 09:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I just rewatched the episode now and you're right, the last part is 'educated' (the quote being from Monty Cant Buy Me Love). However I can't find where it says that in the external link (unless the external link was removed before my check, which is possible). Redterror117 (talk) 14:00, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Real Name
[edit]On tonight's episode (1/25/09), Willie had a flashback to Ellis Island where he called himself "Dr. William MacDougal," however I don't know how accurate that would be since the flashback clearly took place around the turn of the 20th Century and depicted Willie as old as he is in the present. Understanding that this is a cartoon where no one ages though, I just took it for what it's worth.
I did change the initial edit from "or 'Doctor William McDoogle'" to "originally 'Dr. William MacDougal'" though to make it look more authentically Scottish. 66.136.149.140 (talk) 01:28, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- I would like to comment that unlike the lamentable "Jeff Albertson" Comic Gook Guy name revelation, this actually kind of made sense...in that they reveal that "Willie"'s full name is "William MacDougal"; thus they actually kept his first name consistent (no shocking revelation or twist) and gave him a reasonable Scottish surname. --Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici (talk) 03:53, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
- This flashback is taking place in the episode XX/9, Lisa the Drama Queen. Dr. William MacDougal's name is changed by the immigration authority on Ellis Island to "Groundskeeper Willie". --Hodsha (talk) 09:47, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
Brother?
[edit]For the family section, wasn't he revealed to have a brother named Gravedigger Billy in the episode where they move the graveyard next to the Simpson house after protesting the stamp museum? Enigmatic2k3 (talk) 22:04, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Was it only mentioned in that episode? This show is not known for its reliable continuity, so I think it would be best to only add established facts rather than things only mentioned once-off in one episode. If the latter was used, most articles relating to The Simpsons would be inundated with irrelevant facts that have no relevance to the television series as a whole. Where he's really from
[edit]Season 23 Episode 13: The Daughter Also Rises claims that Grounds Keeper Willie is from Kirkwall. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.136.125.63 (talk) 00:05, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Who knows, I wouldn't worry about it, they always contradict themselves. CTJF83 06:42, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
No no, in the episode referenced above he actaully directly adresses the issue of where he's from, he says something along the lines of, some say I am from Edinburgh, and some say Glasgow, but that is wrong I am from Kirkwall in the Orkneys, the revolation actually sparked a question in the scotish parliament, below is a quote from politicalnote.net:-
- S4M-01921 Liam McArthur: Hands off Groundskeeper Willie — That the Parliament notes that it has been confirmed that Groundskeeper Willie of The Simpsons fame hails from Kirkwall, Orkney; understands that the revelation is made in an episode entitled The Daughter Also Rises, to be broadcast in America on 12 February 2012, where Willie confides in Bart that his father was a ‘doonie’ and his mother was an ‘uppie’, in reference to the two teams in the world-famous ‘Ba game’ … and calls on Glasgow City Council to renounce its claim to Orkney’s Groundskeeper Willie as a son of that fair city. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.81.124.196 (talk) 12:22, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- So, what are you getting at exactly? CTJF83 20:31, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
The episode directly addresses the issue, stating he is from Kirwall Orkney and that this is the 'Real Deal'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.133.7.11 (talk • contribs) 18:20, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Willie isn't from one place in Scotland any more than Springfield is one state. The ambiguity and contradictions are intentional. --BDD (talk) 18:51, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Mid-class importance in Scotland?
[edit]It is ridiculous that a fictional supporting character on American TV can be classed as mid-importance to a project on Scotland. Indiasummer95 (talk) 13:19, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- A member of WikiProject Scotland tagged the article and assigned its importance. I'm sure you could bring it up with the project if it seems like that much of an injustice. Given that The Times called him the most recognizable Scot in the world, the tag seems reasonable. --BDD (talk) 18:51, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Groundskeeper Willie's Voice
[edit]Harry Shearer does the voice of Willie, Says who? All sources I saw say it's Shearer. Please provide a source that says differently. Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.211.24.125 (talk) 11:25, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Willie's sources I saw is Harry Shearer everywhere, so he is voiced by Harry Shearer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.211.24.125 (talk) 11:27, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
