[edit]

Why would this page have to be deleted?

There are pages about other rail firms, so why not Grantrail?

80.193.99.43 (talk) 09:08, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, articles on similar firms, such as Jarvis PLC, don't have as much information eyt are not up for speedy deletion! 80.193.99.43 (talk) 09:18, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to this page?!?

[edit]

It's gone from a nice little page given an over view with pictures of some of their work and machines to a huge advert! Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 11:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most of this reads like an advert! 86.163.134.21 (talk) 20:15, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"This group is claimed to be ideal for employees who are just beginning or still developing their respective careers in any aspect of the industry.[citation needed]"

This bit made me laugh! 86.160.237.223 (talk) 19:21, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this sentence is probably one of the best examples of breach of WP:SPAM I have seen on Wiki! Dormskirk (talk) 23:19, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I loved that bit too - especially reading it after they made me redundant! Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 23:54, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References note

[edit]

A large number of links that were in the References section were removed in this edit. They all appear to be dead links to websites that look to have under gone a restructuring since being posted and it was probably not the best way of placing them. The page now needs some referencing and the application of inline references is really required to replace the removed dead links. Keith D (talk) 15:44, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think the problem is that Rail2685's edit was obviously someone from the company re-writing the page and they put in lots of things from their website and now the company has changed its name, all the links are dead as a result of the relaunch.
A lot of the information in the article needs attention or removal as all the divisions have change their names now!
Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 14:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - looks like we need an expert on the job, its tagged for clean-up and references for now. Keith D (talk) 14:58, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I work there and I'm not sure where to begin with editing it! Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 12:41, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't ! see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest
The article is a bit adverty - but not too bad. I'll have a go at rewriting it at some time in the future.
Also has someone got the previous article for "GrantRail" before it was renamed - really that article should have been left as it was - for historical reference, with a link to the successor company. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.232.187 (talkcontribs) 21:42, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The previous article was moved to this title at 11:52, 2 March 2009 by Zozzie 9t9 thus the revisions of this article prior to that move relate to the GrantRail article as was. If people think that the GrantRail article should be retained then the history can be split into two. Keith D (talk) 22:31, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's a need, providing the history of GrantRail and Grant Lyon Eagre are covered within this article. Spilting the history for the moment would be difficult as VolkerRail is, is GrantRail with a different name - it hasn't had a chance to establish its own history or achievements just yet - it's only been VR for a month! Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 08:44, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Companies

[edit]

There's "VolkerRail Ltd." as well as "VolkerRail b.v" - it might be a good idea to move the page, or cover both...213.249.232.187 (talk) 15:01, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also see http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/VolkerRail —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.249.232.187 (talk) 15:05, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't cover both please - they are totally seperate organisations, but within the same international group of companies. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 09:38, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advertising

[edit]

Advertising: the amount of advertising in this article is clearly in breach of WP:SPAM and previous efforts to clean-up the article have been reverted. The article should either be cleaned up without delay, or failing that, deleted. No other UK rail company on Wiki is the subject of this amount of self-promotion. Dormskirk (talk) 22:42, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't the advertising be removed? 86.141.79.152 (talk) 22:40, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it should be removed: the problem has been that an editor (presumably an employee of the company) reverts such deletions. Dormskirk (talk) 10:58, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I used to work for GrantRail and then, obviously, VolkerRail and a lot of the information in the article is accurate but it is put forward in a very corporate manner. I'm happy to try and help get it back into shape! But please let's let persue full deletion. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 23:43, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would also still support full deletion on the basis that we do not normally have articles about subsidiaries of large groups (in this case VolkerWessels) but it is getting better as a result of the removal of some of the worst of the spam. Dormskirk (talk) 11:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But VolkerRail has a long history as a British company before it was wholly aquired by the Dutch lot. It holds quite a unique position within the railway industry in the way it developed from a little contractor who specilised in Industrial work to taking on the 'big boys' like Balfour Beatty and Jarvis in mainline contracts. Also many So please cease with this obsession with having it deleted. Going by your criteria, alsmot every article on current companies in the rail industry should be deleted! Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 22:27, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it would be good to have an article describing the history of Grant Rail before it was acquired by VolkerWessels. I am very happy to change my position on this (and support keeping the article) if you are prepared to continue your excellent work in cleaning up the article. Dormskirk (talk) 22:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well it looks a little better now! It started out as a decent little article but it definately was reworked by the Business Development department from Head Office! I have various things in my own archive to draw upon so will see what I can add. Grants used to be a very innovative company and trying to include some of this would be rather good I think. But remember that VolkerWessels had been part owner of GrantRail since its inception in 1996 so they do have their own place in the story. In fact the European connection is why Grants chose some of the equipment they did, which is partly what made it a fun company to work for in the GrantRail days. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 20:26, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree - good job! Dormskirk (talk) 23:39, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looking good!
Pleased it didn't get deleted :-) Zozzie seems to be an ex-employee too! Really miss GrantRail... Grantrail-dave (talk) 21:27, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You know full well I am! And you must have some photos in your archive which you could add here!
I've been sorting through all the files I have and I think there are a few photos which would add to the article - a few bits of nicely finished P-Way work as well as various examples of VR plant in operation or stabled on sites. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 05:37, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What does Volker actually do now?

[edit]

Apart from tamping and the maintainence at Scunthorpe, what does the company actually do now? 157.203.254.2 (talk) 18:53, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good question!
According to a friend of mine who still works there, they still have a number of small signalling and OHLE contracts ongoing. And I believe they are still in Manchester too on the Metrolink works too plus there will be maintenance work on Sheffield Supertram from memory. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 12:41, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sunny Scunny

[edit]

I've expanded the section on Scunthorpe maintanence - no sources but I was there! I'll see if I can find any online references though. I thought it would be nice to add anyway though as I thinki it's quite an interesting subject. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 10:54, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would be very good if you could find some references because the whole article is generally very weak on sources. Good luck. Dormskirk (talk) 22:49, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is the fristrating thing with Wikipedia, even if you were there and know what happened it's still not verified! If I have to I will put something on my own site and reference that!
I have a few photos which I think will add to the article which were taken when I worked for GR/VR. Zozzie 9t9 (talk) 07:53, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
