Review

[edit]
Lead
  • There are specific things about the lead section, but I've got the feeling like I'm reading the back of a box in places rather than the lead of an encyclopedic article. Just my impression.
  • There are lots of uses of the phrase "the game" in the lead. Makes reading slightly repetitive.
Removed some instances of "game".
  • The majority of the original game's development team worked on God of War and designed the game to be accessible and grounded. - The series, or the first game?
Not sure where the confusion on this one is as it says "original game's development team".
@JDC808: Ah, okay. I understand now. You don't need to change this.
  • Perhaps rewrite that Kratos remains the only playable character? I momentarily got the impression that Atreus was directly playable.
Tried to rewrite.
  • The game performed well commercially, selling over five million physical copies within a month of release, as well as over two million digital copies, making it the best-selling game in the franchise and one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games of all time. - Can't this be shortened to total sales?
Tried to rework.
  • ...tying it with the original God of War (2005)... - Maybe use the phrase "original God of War", and using this link at all is based on a point further above.
Changed to that phrasing.
  • God of War received "Best Action and Adventure Game" at 2018's The Independent Game Developers' Association Awards and "Best Storytelling" and "PlayStation Game of the Year" at the 2018 Golden Joystick Awards, among others, as well as awards and nominations in other categories from other media outlets. - This part doesn't feel comfortable. Maybe just say that "God of War won and was nominated for awards from both media outlets and industry ceremonies/events".
Reworked. --JDC808 06:38, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Gameplay
  • I think the image should be from the current game, not a two-year-old demo created for a trailer. Even if there are small differences, they're still differences.
Will look for a new image of the final game.
  • The gameplay is vastly different from the previous installments, as it was rebuilt from the ground up.[6] Although the previous main installment, Ascension (2013), introduced multiplayer to the series, this installment is single-player-only.[4] The game features a third-person, over-the-shoulder free camera, a departure from the previous installments, which featured a third-person, fixed cinematic camera (with the exception of 2007's 2D side-scroller Betrayal).[7] - I feel that this sentence could be vastly simplified. It makes me feel like I can't understand this article without reading about the other seven games. You should mention differences from earlier titles so other elements of the section make sense, but having a marketing pitch as the opening of a section feels odd.
I'm not sure how to address this. This is a sequel, so to me, it makes sense to address that this has vastly different gameplay first.
  • Do we really need to know the variety of enemies Kratos meets?
Since it's based on a mythology, it seems to make sense to list at least some enemies, as all but a couple are based on these mythological creatures. Trimmed it down some though. --JDC808 01:18, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Plot
  • The link to Norse mythology is double linking, as it's also used in the Gameplay section.
Woops, removed.
  • The spirit of the Greek goddess Athena (Carole Ruggier) makes a cameo appearance, and Zeus (Corey Burton) appears as an illusion to Kratos in Helheim. - Can this be sourced?
Meant to get a source for that. Will get one. Got one. --JDC808 01:20, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Development
  • First paragraph has a heck of a lot of "In xxx-year" statements, rather like the article for Final Fantasy XV before I worked with several other users to completely rewrite it.
  • Fourth paragraph has a lot of quotes. It gets overwhelming. Maybe rewrite a little so it reads more naturally.
In progress on these above two comments.
Made some changes to address above two comments.
  • The frame rate was confirmed as 30 frames per second,[4] and the enemy count was increased to up to 100 enemies on-screen; God of War III and Ascension could do up to 50.[23] - Any reason why the frame rate was capped?
Not sure. I'll see if there is any article that may address this.
Still not sure. I'm going to assume the console's capabilities, but found an article and added its information that there are two modes, one for resolution which caps it at 30fps, while the other is for performance and caps it at 60fps.
He is previously linked in the Characters sub-section. --JDC808 01:21, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Reception
  • tying it with the original God of War for the highest score in the franchise - Is there an independent reliable source for this?
I could include the Metacritic article for the original game that shows its score? Not sure if Metacrtic does this, but I'll see if they have scores for franchises alone.
  • Make sure the journals and websites with articles here are linked when they're first mentioned.
  • There's a lot of "Someone of xxx" in this paragraph, to the point that I'm being put of reading by its repetitiveness. Please rewrite so there's more variety and more use of each critic's names rather than name and publication when citing praise or criticism.
In progress addressing above two points. --JDC808 01:25, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Made changes to address the above two points. --JDC808 04:59, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@JDC808: These are the points that came to mind as I read through the article. There may be a second round of comments once all my issues are addressed or your approach to points explained. Putting  On hold. --ProtoDrake (talk) 17:01, 22 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ProtoDrake I'll begin working through your comments this weekend. --JDC808 06:31, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@JDC808: I've looked at the article. Your responses have addressed everything that seemed to me to be holding this article back. The image can be done after its promotion, so you have time to find a really good one. I'll Pass this article, as it's generally a really good read. Does still need an image from the current game, but that's not enough to warrant holding it back. --ProtoDrake (talk) 10:16, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, what a pleasant surprise. Awesome! Thanks! --JDC808 10:49, 30 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
