Gillenia vs. Porteranthus
[edit]Nice job doing the digging on the genus name. The language of the clarification on this seems a bit complex considering this is an encyclopedia. Since the vote was declared "mooted", does that mean that it was deemed unnecessary, and that Gillenia was the correct name? I don't have access to the referenced article so I am not sure. - The debate goes:
- -Adanson uses Gillena, which is latter synonymized with Clethra, but does not validly publishes it.
- -Moench uses Gillenia.
- -Britton considers the two names subject to confusion, and substitutes Porteranthus for Gillenia
- -A proposal is made to formally conserve Gillenia over Porteranthus
- -The committee rules that Gillenia is not subject to confusion, thus mooting the necessity for formal conservation.
- -The committee also comments that Gillena was not a validly published name (I'm not sure whether that makes it an available name, though.)
- -Hence the valid name would be Gillenia.
- If you can think of a better way to explain all this, fell free to tweak my wording. Circeus 16:56, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
