[edit]If the word means the same as the German word "gewiss" than the meaning would be "The certain ones." as in "I'm certain that..."80.235.69.5 (talk) 08:38, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
I believe tha Saklavatla suggests that the Gewisse were basically a gang formed to seize plunder & territory along the Thames Valley and into what became Wessex - not dissimilar to the Krays' Gang called the "Firm" and may have been comprised of men who were not even Saxon such as Cerdic, who has a Celtic name, the Roman version of which was "Caractacus". Thus the idea of "Gewis" being an ancestor mistakes the nature of this group--Streona (talk) 17:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Map of Gewisse?
[edit]I'd like to know if anyone could provide a map of the area and dates covered by this group.

Sentence removed - grammatical misunderstanding
[edit]I have removed the following passage:
- Another possibility is that it was named after a region in Sub-Roman Britain known as Gewissorum,[1] evidenced by the title dux Gewissorum purportedly held by Eudaf Hen and Vortigern.
As explained in the edit summary, this is based on ignorance of Latin grammar. "Gewissorum" is a Latin genitive plural, "of the Gewisse", and can only refer to an ethnic or dynastic group, not a region. Nicknack009 (talk) 12:46, 30 October 2022 (UTC) Nicknack009 (talk) 12:46, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
