Gerace is a beautiful place and well worth a visit if you are in Calabria. It is a walk back in time. The entire town is an ancient place. The buildings are connected, mostly built of stone. The Churches and Cathedral are breath taking. The simple central plaza, outside the Churches, is open and airy with the church entrances along the edge. Walking through the town there are shops, cafes, shrines, and incredible views. A fine artist, Ettore Scoleri lives in Gerace. It is a privilege to visit his gallery. He is always present and happy to talk and allow photos. He creates statues of humanity and has reached a place in his life where he no longer sells his work. He feels to sell a work is to loose a piece of his own heart. All of his work reflects his emotions and his attempt to shed light and knowledge on the struggles of humanity in the world.
Whether headed up or down a hill in Gerace, you will see lovely homes, window boxes, flowers, cacti and life proceeding onwards. The view of the Ocean and Locri below are stunning. The Norman Castle ruins, views of Olive trees and vineyards, Memorial to those lost at war, are all worthy of reflection.
Barlaam of Calabria and Edward Lear
[edit]Barlaam of Calabria, Orthodox theologian and Greek mentor to the poet Petrarch, served as bishop of Gerace from 1341-42 till his death in 1348. Edward Lear, British nonsense-verse writer (e.g., "The Owl and the Pussycat"), painter, and traveler visited Gerace during his 1840s sojourn in Southern Italy. Plaques mark houses in the town where they are both claimed to have resided. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.109.151.178 (talk) 05:45, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
