[edit]Is it possible to get a more up to date image of George North?
For Example thumb|George North profile picture from the WRU Website — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dwhatley (talk • contribs) 13:23, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Looking at the source of that image here, it would appear to be a breach of copyright and so will need to be hastily deleted. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:27, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
He’s a Welsh Rugby Union Player
[edit]Change it 75.133.114.63 (talk) 02:16, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- It says he plays for Wales, what more do you want? His nationality isn't exactly simple either, since he was born in England and has at least one English parent. – PeeJay 09:04, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- You won't see him this year in the 2022 Six Nations Championship squads, but he is still signed through to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:42, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- PeeJay, it incorrectly says ‘ British rugby union player’. His nationality is Welsh, not that difficult to understand. Drop that attitude too. 75.133.114.63 (talk) 18:33, 13 February 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.133.114.63 (talk)
- Where does it say "British rugby union player"? Certainly not in this article, although it wouldn't be an incorrect description, since he's been capped by the British Lions. – PeeJay 20:11, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- IP 75, as far as I know, all Welsh people are also British people. If you have a source that disproves that, I'd be very interested to see it. So sorry if I also have "an attitude". Martinevans123 (talk) 20:20, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- Wrong you are Martin. Sources unnecessary. Educate yourself and you’ll get it. The attitude part was aimed at the other fella, learn how to read.
- It should read “Welsh Rugby union player”
- Why this is so hard to do is beyond me, then again Wikipedia is a pro union page therefore no surprises. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.133.114.63 (talk) 22:08, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- I can read perfectly well, thanks. I used the word "also" (twice) above. Perhaps you could explain to us why you think Welsh people are not also British, and we can then move on to consider sources which might support that notion? Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Wikipedia is a pro union page". Martinevans123 (talk) 22:44, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

- This is bizarre, and wouldn't happen with say - an English player who was born in Wales. It's clearly a bad faith attempt to make out he's somehow not Welsh: the particular wording: "Born in England" "qualifies on ancestry"... 46.208.157.3 (talk) 21:15, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- His father is English. His mother is Welsh. He was born in King's Lynn. There's no "bad faith". Who knows what might happen with an English player who was born in Wales. Perhaps you know of one? Martinevans123 (talk) 21:38, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
That would be up to you to work out Martin. If you are from Wales (making you Welsh), Stockholm Syndrome can be cured. The rest you can work out, hopefully. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.133.114.63 (talk) 13:15, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- We don't refer to George North as a Welsh rugby player because his nationality is more complicated than that. He plays for Wales, but he was born in England and one of his parents is English. Therefore we refer to him as a rugby player who plays for Wales, not as Welsh. – PeeJay 17:51, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- George North is a fluent Welsh speaker who grew up in Wales since the age of 2. He self identifies as a Welshman and quotes show he has viewed himself this way since childhood, "Shane is one of my heroes. As a young Welshman at that time, watching him on the ball and off the ball, the energy, is something that is very much in my mind". He is Welsh in the same way that say Christian Bale (born in Wales) is English. 80.192.37.143 (talk) 08:59, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
- No, it's up to you to explain a claim that appears to be just plain ridiculous and wrong. I agree 100% with PeeJay. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:53, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, PeeJay. I thought your name was one of those special "editor choices". :) Martinevans123 (talk) 20:26, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
- And I also agree so I have removed that content earlier on today without noticing this discussion first. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 18:31, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Nationality_of_people_from_the_United_Kingdom is key here, it suggests that we should "Look specifically for evidence that the person has a preferred nationality." George North has identified himself as Welsh. Nationality should appear in the opening, and his nationality is Welsh unless anyone can show me evidence of him referring to himself as English.
- Scores of people in the UK are not born in the country they consider themselves the national of. 80.192.37.143 (talk) 13:21, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
- That's true, lots of people are born outside the nation they identify with. However, North's father is English and he was born in England, so his nationality isn't as straightforward as it might seem to the lay reader who probably only knows of North as having played for Wales. Because of that issue, it makes it easier to deal with the whole situation if we simply say he's a professional rugby union player who plays for the Ospreys and the Wales national team. – PeeJay 15:37, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
