2 August 1865 There is a request from Lt. Col. George Pope to discharge 1st Sgt. George E. Stephens "in order that he may accept Commission as 2nd Lieutenant." I don't think this commission was with the 54th, investigating. -kim. (talk) 19:35, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The 54th regiment was mustered out 20 August 1865. Have not yet found evidence of his mustering in as a commissioned officer with any USCT regiment. -kim. (talk) 20:00, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
