Ethnicity
[edit]George Dolenz might have been born in Italy, but this doesn't make him Italian. He was part of the Slovene minority, which was at the time a major population group in the Trieste region and even the prevalent population group in some parts of the countryside around Trieste. His original name, Jure Dolenc is distinctively Slovene.
Apparently he was active in the slovene culture groups in America, and is even credited with uttering the first (and one of the rare) slovene lines in a hollywood movie. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm the information in this second paragraph, as I only heard it on TV, in an interview with an American-Slovene researcher of A-S actors appearing in american movies. Apparently, at least one book was published on the subject by this person, but i cannot recal his name or the title of the book, so unless somebody else can confirm this information, it is rather useless. The talk show, where the researcher in question appeared is called Studio City, it airs on Slovene national TV, and should still be in the online archive at www.rtvslo.si , if somebody with a sufficient knowledge of slovene would want to confirm.
This much is certain, though: judging by the name Jure Dolenc, it is undeniable that he was of Slovene ancestry. There were probably several reasons for his leaving Trieste, but one of these was almost certainly the Italian fascist opression of minorities at the time, and I find it highly unapropriate that he is crammed into the "Italians" category. I dare say George Dolenz would disagree with this. (my nick on the Slovene language wikipedia is Cornelius. i couldn't use it to sign in here, and i didn't want to create a separate account just for this rant) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.172.254.120 (talk • contribs)
