Use of designators for Battle of Chattanooga and Battle of Franklin
[edit]The designation in the article of the Battle of Chattanooga as the "Third" battle of the name and the Battle of Winchester as "Second Winchester" while technically correct is not helpful and will confuse most readers. For most civil war readers and even students the third battle of Chattanooga fought between Grant and Bragg on Nov.23-25 1863 is known simply as the Battle of Chattanooga. The first and second "battles" were minor engagements. Likewise, the November 30, 1864 blood bath at Franklin pitting Hood against Schofield is the only real Battle of Franklin. The earlier engagement which involved a reconnaissance in force engagement by Earl Van Dorn was not particularly significant. Too much detail is not necessarily useful and can be confusing.
