The image of Oldman as a disfigured child molester has been replaced with a picture of him at the Batman Begins premiere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.42.204.34 (talk) 20:29, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
personal life
Should something be written up on Oldman being a recovered alcoholic and/or about the nasty split-ups between his first two wives?
- No. This is an encyclopedia, not a celebrity magazine. bob rulz 20:16, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
Well, I think maybe a sentence saying he's a recovered alcoholic might be OK, but I don't think particular detail is needed about his split-ups. Alexrushfear 17:39, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
On the other hand he has spoken about alcoholism publicly on several occasions (since drying out). It is just about common knowledge about him. I've never met him or anything but I have read interviews by him in which he has told journalists he could drink two bottles of vodka and still be standing and conversational, so it seems this is not something he is trying to keep private. Also his arrest for DWI is a matter of public record. Also the divorce from his 3rd wife and the awful custody dispute is a matter of public record. They publicly said terrible (though not proven) things against each other, though Mr Oldman was ultimately exonerated and granted custody. If a public figure says things publicly, or does things that are public record (as is the case in ct. proceedings), perhaps they are more encyclopedic than gossip?24.131.12.228 18:14, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Emily K. (please let me know if I can add any of this)
I'm not sure that his place of birth, as listed here, is correct. Every source I have ever read has named his place of birth as New Cross, London and, in fact, his accent reflects this (Nottingham sounds is a different accent than this.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.208.11.119 (talk) 08:07, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Marriage Date
I've changed the date of his marriage to Lesley Manville to 1988- the [1]BFI database gives an exact date of 13/3/1988, although I'm not sure how accurate this is.
"Tufano" vandalism
Note that edits inserting supposed information about "Marc Tufano" are vandalism and should be reverted on sight. This has affected multiple articles (Robert De Niro, The Beatles, etc. etc.) -- Curps 18:06, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
General Grievous?
I thinkthe article is wrong in saying Oldman voiced Grievous in Star Wars. He may have been considered but as far as I know, his voice was not in the film and neither was he credited for anything.
You are correct, Oldman did not voice him. Matthew Wood voiced grievous in SWIII, and several others voiced grievous for w/e else he was in, like clone wars.
He sent in an audition tape for the part, but he didn't get it. LoosiD (talk) 15:48, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
NPOV
Am I alone in thinking this article is a little on the fannish side? Should it be edited for NPOV?
I agree that it does need a re-write; two of the paragraphs state the same thing, in slightly different ways. I am not nearly a dedicated-enough bio-re-writer, so I won't attempt remaking it, but it does need to be done. Also, can someone tag it for needed attention?
I made a few edits
Hope they are okay. I changed roles that would be a stretch for any actor--since that seem fannish even to me--to other roles in his diverse history, which seemed more neutral I also added that he has 3 sons, and by which wives, and that has custody of the youngest 2. Would it be acceptable to add their names and/or dates of birth? Emily K.24.131.12.228 18:21, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Article needs a tidy-up
This seems to have become a depository for every rumour and/or internet joke about Oldman. On top of that, the biography part is very messy, and very messy looking.
Famous Relations
I have heard on many occassions that Mo from Eastenders is Gary Oldmans half sister. If this is true it should be inc. in the article.TammiMagee 09:36, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- She is his full sister. Her stage name is Laila Morse, and this info is now included in the article.
Fanboy Heaven
This article focuses too much on fanboy films like Batman, Harry Potter (especially), and the Fifth Element. Someone even put this as a Harry Potter article. While they were all successful films I think more mention should be made of films that was made more with critics in mind than Summer Movie goers, such as Dracula, JFK, Nil By Mouth, Prick Up Your Ears, and Sid and Nancy. I always found it amazing how he lost 80 lbs for Sid and Nancy and had to be hospitalized, but that's mentioned nowhere.

Career section contains many spoilers
Due to frequently playing villains, and people struck by tragedy, his characters often die in his films.. The descriptions of how each character dies are effectively spoilers, aren't they? Thats not right IMO.. Bmathew 19:47, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

GAC review
This article is off to a good start, but I see some problems with the sourcing, formatting and prose that concerns me. At this moment the article does not fulfill the GA criteria, but I'm willing to put the nomination on hold in order to allow contributors to work. Here are some suggestions/comments for improvement:
- The references are a mess. None of them are formatted properly and several of them (IMDb, scifipedia, hunkymalecelebs) are not from reliable sources. I suggest using citation templates in order to correctly format the links and look for replacement refs for those from disreputable sources. María (habla conmigo) 16:36, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- Two fansites are linked to in the external links. Per WP:EL, there should be none. Also remove the duplicate IMDb link to the awards and nominations page; this is redundant.
- Image:Han2.jpg does not have a fair use rationale.
- The use of "influential" in the lead, although sourced, is open to debate. I would remove it entirely.
- More information needs to be given in order for the lead to adhere to WP:LEAD; there is no mention of his early life, music training, family, or cult following. Nil by Mouth shouldn't be mentioned by itself and more can be said about his film making, as well.
- and can be seen singing and playing piano in the 1988 movie Track 29, and tracing over pre-recorded versions of Beethoven's music in Immortal Beloved: Ref? Also remember to italicize the film name.
- The "Music" section is only one sentence long and no date is given. The biography should follow a chronological timeline.
- After graduating from drama school in 1979, Oldman spent almost eight years in theater, winning various awards: such as...? Ref?
- successfully using an American accent: what does "successfully" refer to? The accent itself?
- In October 2007, movie website TheShiznit.co.uk... how is this a notable website/accolade?
- Because of its length, I suggest breaking the "Filmography" list into two columns.
- Oldman also directed the music video for "Red Rover", a song from Jewish Rap Group Chutzpah's 2nd CD "Hip Hop Fantasy,": the first comma placement (outside of the quotation marks) is correct, the second isn't; there are several of these that need to be fixed throughout the article.
I did not read the prose too closely, but once these issues have been taken care of, I'm willing to give it a second review. Until then, I'm going to put the nomination on hold. Please do let me know if you have any questions or comments. María (habla conmigo) 16:36, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have failed this nomination for Good Article candidacy based on lack of activity regarding my previous comments. María (habla conmigo) 12:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
controversy
In this section, there's a quote that says "Oldman also reportedly blasted Keanu Reeves for his performance in the film." This contains a citation pointing to an Entertainment Weekly blurb which says "Keanu was a bit out of his depth in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel. Even though he was frequently blasted off the screen by Gary Oldman, playing the titular bloodsucker, Reeves did get to have a nice moment at the center of a hot ménage a vampire-babe quatre." This "blasted" pretty clearly means metaphorically that Oldman's performance was much better than Keanu's - there's no indication that Oldman actually has ever said anything negative about Keanu. I'm therefore removing the sentence. 65.0.18.166 (talk) 00:43, 15 June 2008 (UTC) Sorry, forgot to log in for the above! Vonspringer (talk) 00:44, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
"Controversy" and "Critical opinion"
The "Controversy" section seems a total straw clutching exercise to sensationalise this article - Oldman was never covered by the media for anything in his personal life. He spent one night in prison. He "allegedly" didn't get on with winona. His wife made an irrational claim that he beat her and took drugs, which was shot down in court. He didn't like the editing process of the Contender. Hardly major instances of controversy, are they? Integrated section into article. Also "critical opinion" section would seem best merged with popularity, as it illuminates Oldman's popularity with critics (sentence about detractors still remains). Drink problems included in "personal life".Hordak89 (talk) 09:19, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
influencing actors
just thought i'd point out that daniel radcliffe (harry potter) often talks about him as being a huge influence on his acting. sorry for lacking the motivation to add the detail/citation myself, i just thought i'd chuck it out there. 115.166.1.203 (talk) 15:23, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

English-Born?
Not sure who bought that up but just because you have lived in the US for the last 15 or so years does that class you as English-Born, hence being a American Citizen, many actors live in the US from the UK, but does not make them American after a while. I suggest it stays 'English actor' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.0.130.64 (talk) 20:40, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- No, living in the United States doesn't make you a US citizen, but the facts are unclear. "English actor" rules out the possibility of US citizenship, which is an unsubstantiated assertion. "English-born" does not assert that Oldman is a US citizen; merely that he was born in England and has lived in the US since the early 1990s. I have reverted your edits, but feel free to discuss the issue further. Fester Smith (talk) 10:58, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
That's ridiculous. Gary Oldman only has to open his mouth and anyone can tell he is English. You are grasping at straws to claim him as an American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.145.252.66 (talk) 13:20, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Voicing Ryuk in Death Note movie?
Where is the source for that? While it would be cool, I haven't seen a reliable source confirming this anywhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.89.35.179 (talk) 21:05, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Article still seems fannish
Despite all the changes made, the article about Gary Oldman still seems fannish. Gary's a good actor, no doubt. But, the fact remains that for the majority of his career, he has starred in low-budget R-rated films that have bombed at the Box-office. To say, "As of 15 December, 2009, motion pictures starring Oldman as leading actor or supporting co-star have grossed over $2.5 billion at the United States box office, and over $6 billion worldwide", seems as if an obsessed fan may have done the changes to this article. Oldman's career was in the doldrums in the early 2000s, before he signed up for the Harry Potter films which have helped him in resurrecting his career. From 1982-2002, the films that have starred Oldman (in a leading or supporting role), while being box-office hits at the same time, have been far and few. Oldman himself has admitted the fact that he signed up for the Harry Potter films because he needed the money, and he was in a lot of financial debt at the time (& I daresay, he knew that being Harry Potter films, the movies were going to be box-office hits, in any case). Let's not forget that while Oldman is someone who is respected by his peers, not too many people are actually aware of the fact that he is an actor. There are still many people who say,"Who's Gary Oldman?" (For instance, I didn't know who Gary Oldman was until I was going through all the cast actors for the final two installments of Harry Potter). So, he is not as famous and legendary as this article makes him to be.59.184.186.162 (talk) 16:01, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- His career was "in the doldrums" in the early 2000s? I think that having a starring role in The Contender, which was critically acclaimed and won Oldman a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination belies that claim. Sure, the film wasn't a blockbuster, but it was well received at the Oscars and turned a profit. What about playing the primary antagonist of Hannibal, which drew $351,692,268? "In the doldrums"? Don't think so, really. And your nonsensical claim about people asking "who's Gary Oldman?" is just your brittle opinion. I don't know anyone who watches film who hasn't heard of him - there's a conflicting opinion right there. The fact is that Oldman has appeared in central roles in JFK, Dracula, The Fifth Element, Air Force One, Lost in Space, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the Batman series, A Christmas Carol and The Book of Eli, all of which were box office successes. The box office figure presented is simply a fact, it's not an opinion that can be swayed or proved wrong. The Affable Man (talk) 14:27, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
Cameo?
I just insert this section to put in light a cameo role that he might have done in the 2001 movie The One. He might have play the prisonner in the second prison embush scene. I hesitate adding this info to the page because I'm not 100% sure it's him... Anyone want to confirm?
National Treasure 3 role confirmed - or not??? Also, future roles not completely mentioned and Apathy towards Oscars
His profile says that he will play a villain in National Treasure 3, but I didn't find anything about his role in the film, when I went to 'National Treasure 3' Wikipedia page. So, if he is confirmed for the film, could you please put up a link confirming the same??
Also, IMDB mentions that he has as many as six upcoming projects in the next two years - 'Harry Potter', 'Kung Fu Panda 2', 'The Girl With the Red Riding Hood' (to be directed by Catherine Hardwicke, which has not been added here, but in the Wikipedia page for Films to be released in 2011, his name appears amongst the cast, so please sort that out) [2], 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' [3], 'Criminal Empire for Dummys' [4], and 'Batman 3 (2012)' [5]. (But taking up so many projects all at one time seems really strange as I remember reading an interview wherein he mentions that he prefers taking up only one project per year so that he can spend more time with his family).
I would like to add all the above mentioned projects but I don't want to be accused of 'vandalizing' the page. Plus, I'd make a big mess of the entire table of his filmography. So, could someone please sort out the filmography section about his future projects?
Since the article mentions about his apathy towards the Oscars (in the first place), is it really necessary to mention that he is one of the greatest actors never to have been nominated for an Academy Award (even if it may be true)? Mentioning that fact for academic purposes seems fine. But, as a reader, reading at first about his 'apathy towards the Oscars', and then mentioning about the fact that he's never been nominated for an Oscar, seems a bit strange. At least, it felt strange to me. I mean, when you say that he shows an apathy towards the Oscars, why also mention his absence of nominations? He himself has never been interested in being nominated, right? Won't connecting both points together be a better idea? Thanks. 59.184.130.71 (talk) 18:20, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Oldman is credited at IMDb as a lead on "Dead Fish" released in 2005, but there's no relevant info or links on this page. Can someone who knows better than me improve this? thx Smittee (talk) 06:26, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Red Riding Hood - animation film???
Is 'The Girl With The Red Riding Hood' an animation film? Why is his role in the film given as a 'Voice-Over' in the Filmography section? I was always under the impression that he would PLAY the role of Father Soloman, rather than voice the character. Could someone please confirm that part?? Thanks. 59.184.160.200 (talk) 16:04, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Why isn't Gary Oldman's role in "The Professional" even mentioned? How young is the author of this page? The Professional also gave Natalie Portman her first role. --Directed by Luc Besson, released in 1994...some people have said it also has one of Oldman's best performances? - Please update this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.141.201.162 (talk) 22:06, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- Don't know why you placed your comment under this section, but will answer it anyway. It is listed. The actual name of the film is Léon. It was also titled The Professional, especially in the US. But it is in there, in the lead and elsewhere. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 16:48, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
New film being reported for Oldman
Looks like Oldman has signed on for his next film (which is due to start shooting next month). It's called 'Guns, Girls, and Gambling'. [6] [7] 59.184.160.200 (talk) 16:04, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
he may have another upcoming role 'Daily Mail film columnist Baz Bamigboye reported in June 2010 that Gary Oldman is in negotiations with Working Title to play George Smiley' in 'tinker, tailor, soldier, spy' so can someone keep an eye on this.
Stage (Theatre) credits
Should Gary Oldman's stage (theatre) credits be added? He started out as a theatre actor 1979-80 onwards (In a 'Harry Potter' interview, Gary Oldman mentions that he had worked with Robbie Coltrane in Glasgow, in Pantomime, in 1980 [8]), till he entered mainstream Hollywood. And he is a Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal Court alumnus. So, I think it's entirely appropriate that his theatre credits should be added. But then the whole world knows him more as a film actor, rather than for his theatre works. Hence, I couldn't find any proper theatre credits for Gary Oldman. So, if there's anybody who has followed his theatre career, or has information (authentic and accurate) about his theatre career, could you please post it up? Thanks. 59.184.137.231 (talk) 12:35, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Cannes Film Festival 1993 Jury Member

The lede
I removed Allmovie's POV description from the lede. Allmovie is a movie database; Its bio pages are not written by professional film critics. Look up any notable (or even non-notable) actors, you will find hyperbolic compliments on their bio pages. It is not exactly a good or even reliable character witness for actors. Also, the tone of the lede feels a bit too enthusiastic. - Artoasis (talk) 11:55, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Lead
Right now the first paragraph is just a straight list of 16 films and shows Oldman was in. Even in the article body this would be classed as bad writing. Underlining that he is a major actor and noting one or two examples is enough. Have a look at William Shakespeare: four plays are mentioned. Otis Redding: two songs are noted. Katharine Hepburn: five films. The lead to Bette Davis does not mention one single film or play she was in. All of these articles are GA or FA. Span (talk) 23:48, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- I haven't seen any doctrine ruling out the inclusion of many films/shows in the lede. Samuel L. Jackson is a GA and 23 films are listed. Robert Downey, Jr., another GA, has 21. I'm re-adding his leads in Prick Up Your Ears (portrayed a significant historical figure, earned first BAFTA nod, acclaimed film, Roger Ebert awarded it 4/4 and described Oldman as Britain's best young actor) and The Firm (has been described as the most important film on football hooliganism, and Oldman's performance the best of his career), as well as his work in Friends (two-part, Emmy-nominated appearance on a major show). I won't bother with Immortal Beloved: although he played an important historical figure, the film wasn't well received and doesn't seem to have any real lasting significance in Oldman's career. Just another guy in a suit (talk) 20:23, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Add 'Romeo is Bleeding'
A reader requested via OTRS that the article be updated to include the 1993 film Romeo is Bleeding. It's on the filmography article, but if someone who is interested in Gary Oldman wants to add something to the article, consider this a suggestion. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:36, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Is the ADL position worth multiple sentences? Particularly is the "refusal to accept an apology" something which is of real and substantial importance to the BLP? Cheers. Collect (talk) 14:56, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Oldman has been nominated, for his first, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama. 2600:1700:CAF0:6D30:1479:9CAA:6FE6:C85B (talk) 15:44, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- Done. This definitely needed to be added because of Oldman's previous criticism of the Golden Globes and, accordingly, I added it to that part of the article. Please have a look. Thank you. CityOfSilver 18:06, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

To prepare for Darkest Hour, Oldman spent 200 hours in the makeup chair for the 17 hours day shoot, wore 14 pounds of foam and silicone to portray Winston Churchill, and smoked $20,000 worth of Cuban cigars that led him to aquiring nicotine poisoning.

Please reverse this edit, which involved removing longstanding text without consensus. That Oldman is a double BAFTA and Empire Award-winning, Palme d'Or and triple BIFA-nominated filmmaker for Nil by Mouth should be enough evidence for notability. Other directing/producing credits include Plunkett & Macleane, The Contender, Nobody's Baby and Jack White: Unstaged. He helmed the in-production Eadweard Muybridge biopic, Flying Horse.[10][11][12] "Filmmaker" is clearly a notable career of Oldman's, and one for which he has absolutely gained significant coverage. Thanks. 178.18.201.123 (talk) 16:21, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Please change "Among other accolades, he has won..." to "Among other accolades, his acting and filmmaking has won...". A user is determined that "filmmaker" is not notable enough for the opening sentence, which now makes the lead read like all the listed awards are for acting alone. BAFTAs and a Palme d'Or nomination are major accolades, but they are for filmmaking, not acting (two of the three BAFTAs, that is).
Changing Sin to Sin (in "Career slump") would also be most helpful. Thanks. 178.18.201.52 (talk) 20:00, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

WP:NPOV dispute
First of all, it looks like both you have already violated WP:3RR. I'm not sure if the IP user (185.51.229.76; 185.51.229.74) really is evading a block as Sro23 claims, because if that's the case, then WP:3RR doesn't apply in this context. While under normal circumstances I would revert the article back to status quo until the dispute is resolved, I'm unable to do so right now as that would be a violation of WP:3RR on my part as well. Regardless of that, to get to the point, it's true that Sunday Express (SE) called him considered by many one of today's best actors
; however, even SE is vague in that sense (see WP:WEASEL) since it doesn't specifically mention which parties consider Goldman as the "best". Wikipedia:Verifiability#Neutrality states that Even when information is cited to reliable sources, you must present it with a neutral point of view (NPOV)
. I'm not sure if SE is reliable to begin with. Also, "dozens of actor articles have this" is not a valid counter argument as described in WP:OTHERCONTENT. In the end, it all boils down to "regarded as one of the greatest living actors by whom". -- ChamithN (talk) 23:39, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- There is no need to worry about WP:3RR for you or me. The IP's are socks of User:The abominable Wiki troll, a banned user who has been targeting this article for years. Sro23 (talk) 23:56, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- You no doubt have WP:CHECKUSER evidence to support this? 185.51.229.73 (talk) 00:10, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
