Why is Gary's style listed as Kuk Sool Won when that's completely inaccurate and there is some controversy regarding the dubious circumstances of him receiving a black belt in that style? --Phrost 23:22, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second this. Goodridge himself has admitted that he only wore the uniform and belt because at the time he thought that's what you needed to get respect in UFC. I was simply funded by a candiand KSW school without having ANY formal training in the art. His style should be listed as MMA.

--Palcrypt 04:12, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I read in an interview that Goodridge was given a Kuk Sool Won black belt because the club was sending a guy and Goodridge heard about it. He faced off against the guy who was meant to go and just pinned him, and Goodridge agreed to go instead of their guy if the club paid him. The club also gave him a blackbelt and made it official. Anyway, it's a well known fact that the Kuk Sool Won thing was a hoax. The reason Goodridge is listed as Kuk Sool Won is because Wikipedia is run by geeks, many of whom practice styles like Kuk Sool Won, Kung-Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc, but have never been in a real fight, don't realise that it doesn't work in a real fight, but nonetheless will debate whether or not a black belt in Tae Kwon Do would beat a professional heavyweight boxer in a fight. Gary Goodridge started out in amateur boxing, he boxed for Canada. --Holymolytree2 05:47, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Height and Weight

[edit]

Gary Goodridge is 6'3 (191cm) and 250lbs approximately, announced in UFC, Pride and K-1 so I corrected them. Someone who keeps altering them should be considered spammer so please stop that. Nowhere is he listed as 6'1 .

brutality in fights

[edit]

I don't have the research skills or time, but I was wondering if Gary's page deserved a section dedicated to the brutality of his fights. The three fights that I would think of would be his elbows on harrera, his crucifix win in the IVC against Augusto Menezes Santos (I thought his neck was broke, for sure), and his testicle squeeze submission in the IVC against an opponent I can't remember the name of. Thanks. 160.150.65.51 (talk) 14:57, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

there's nothing brutal about Big Daddy's style. it was vale tudo and under IVC rules these were all legal moves.Marty Rockatansky (talk)
In the match against Pedro Otavio, Goodridge had his foot in the trunks of his opponent while on the ground, and also had his hand down in there playing pocket pool while in the clinch. I have it on video. "No placing hands or feet inside the opponent's trunks" this is a rule in IVC, but it was probably implemented after the Goodridge fight. Anyway, I think it deserves mention. (I think its a plus for Goodridge, using obscure ways like this to win, and is encyclopaedic knowledge of his resourcefulness) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.65.76.10 (talk) 01:55, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fight Record and Sources

[edit]

It looks like this article could use some work in these areas. His fight record has some really odd notations on it. Such as his loss to Pedro Rizzo. Also, a lot of the intro to the article lacks any sourcing to show where the information on his training and background is coming from. If I get a chance I'll work on some of this, but I'll probably point some of this out to the MMA community page as well and hopefully get some editors interested in it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlahnum (talkcontribs) 19:55, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He's in very bad shape now

[edit]

http://www.thestar.com/sports/mma/ufc/article/983272--the-high-cost-of-living-dangerously

I don't know how to summarize this other than the headline. He's probably the highest profile MMA fighter to have severe brain damage from his 80+ fight career. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.141.136.80 (talk) 15:51, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, there are more recent youtube videos; his memory isn't like what it was once. It is a bit similar to the "punch drunk" state of boxers. I think the main article should indicate this too. (I did not add anything so that I don't incur my own bias into the article, but someone should objectively word this, as youtube videos show that clearly and he talks about it too.) 2A02:8388:1641:8380:A17E:4B04:1E66:74F3 (talk) 00:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

arm wrestling career?

[edit]

There is nothing on it, but he was very accomplished. 213.149.62.46 (talk) 21:42, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, Devon mentioned this too as did Michael Todd. He was probably quite young and did not continue after his UFC/PRIDE career. 2A02:8388:1641:8380:A17E:4B04:1E66:74F3 (talk) 00:25, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stating that he has CTE doesn’t make sense

[edit]

As of 2024 it's impossible to diagnose a living person with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, so this passage from the Personal Life section doesn't seem appropriate: "Resulting from his martial arts career, Goodridge has chronic traumatic encephalopathy".

Kickboxing record is incorrect

[edit]

Goodridge's kickboxing record appears to have just been tabulated from an incomplete list rather than having a source listed for its entirety. Watch his fight against Kengo Watanabe in April 2006. At 1:19 the broadcast shows his record as 43 wins and 24 losses; our page here has his record at 10 wins and 12 losses on that date. This is consistent, as in his May 2003 fight with Mark Hunt, he's announced with a record of 27 wins (13 KO) and 15 losses; our page on the same date has him at 1 victory and 5 losses.--Nihlus1 (talk) 02:25, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
