Disputed Images
[edit]There has been a recent dispute over which image best depicts the Galle Lighthouse, with an editor recently replacing the longstanding image with one that they have recently taken. The two images in question are as follows:
It would assist in the determining which is the more appropriate image for editors to indicate their preference so that the current dispute can be settled once and for all. Dan arndt (talk) 02:53, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
@Rehman:, @Obi2canibe:, @Abishe:, @AntanO:, @Blackknight12:, @ChanakaW:, @Gihan Jayaweera:, @LionCountry25:, @Muhandes:, @Sobreira:, @Roundtheworld:, @Prabhupuducherry:, @Cossde:, @Janakacombank:,
- The second image is more detailed as it depicts the entire surrounding of lighthouse. But the first image shows only the lighthouse, therefore it gives blank idea of the surrounding. Gihan Jayaweera (talk) 09:40, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- Agree with Gihan. The 2nd image desplays the subject in a more understandable setup and is noticeably more detailed. (I have moved the discussion from WT:LK to here, as this is the more appropriate venue) Rehman 04:41, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- I too agree to the suggestions implied by both Gihan and Rehman. The second image is much clearer and noteworthy to add it to the article compared to the first one. Abishe (talk) 05:35, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- Between these two images I think the second is better as it has more context.--Blackknight12 (talk) 10:31, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- 2nd image is much better than 1st image as per photographic view and beautiful. IMO, 1st image gives better view as it is portrait view. Landscape seems to me 'shrink' into infobox. --AntanO 10:40, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- I would retain the existing Infobox image. Landscape seems to fit better there, apart from anything else. But, given the large amount of white space created by the lengthy Infobox, why not include the portrait photo in the text as "an alternative view of the lighthouse"? As others indicate above, it certainly has merits, as it shows the building in its entirety. Roundtheworld (talk) 19:33, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- It would be nice if someone could expand the article.Roundtheworld (talk) 19:34, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, it would be nice if editors remembered that this is an encyclopedia rather than a gallery to showcase photos they've taken on holiday.--Obi2canibe (talk) 20:27, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- Obi2canibe; Pictures taken on a holiday cannot be used on Wikipedia, is it? Or is it pictures by User:A.Savin on a holiday, which is not allowed? I suggest you stay away from meddling with images, in order to not embarrass yourself again. With that being said, I will state here openly and clearly: Considering your popularity in hounding and bullying other users, I will not hesitate to take action if I see any sort of uncivil behaviour from you towards any another user again. That include comments such as the one immediately above, or harassment via edit summaries such as these. Covertly hiding talkpage warnings while responding to something else, would not help you either. Rehman 03:25, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
- Mr Rehman you are Involved "Involvement is generally construed very broadly by the community, to include current or past conflicts with an editor (or editors), and disputes on topics, regardless of the nature, age, or outcome of the dispute." Hence only another admin can look into it no point in you threatening Obi2canibe or bullying another with a block which you can should not do under policy .No mass changes of images without consensus Savin is wrong here.27.5.71.169 (talk) 11:29, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- a) I am A.Savin and not User:Savin in case you still didn't get it, b) I do not mass change anything and c) There is no policy that replacements of files require consensus in general; as well as no such policy regarding any good-faith changes to articles. --A.Savin (talk) 01:11, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

- @Rehman: I know you are itching to pull the trigger but before you do please read WP:INVOLVED (as the suspiciously well informed anonymous editor has stated).--Obi2canibe (talk) 16:36, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
- You seem to have quite some difficulty sticking to the subject. The only itch I have is to stop people like you from harassing other valued volunteers. And no, your talkpage is not "your house". Rehman 04:52, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

The Galle Lighthouse is an onshore lighthouse in Galle, Sri Lanka. The oldest light station in the country, it is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The first lighthouse in the area was built by the British in 1848 using cast-iron plates, but was destroyed by fire in 1936. The current 26.5-metre-high (87 ft) concrete lighthouse was built in 1939, around 100 metres (300 ft) from the original. This photograph of the Galle Lighthouse was taken in January 2020.
