I have a theory - "PhD, DD" could be pronounced "fuddy duddy." 214.8.219.184 (talk) 15:07, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
I some earlier references to the word.
From 1871, with a different meaning, in the short story "The Haunted Valley" by A G Bierce, published in The Overland Monthly, Volume 7
In this article from 1874, it refers to a particular man's nickname of "Fuddyduddy" "New Gloucester [Maine] Centennial," September 7, 1874 http://books.google.com/books?id=23gUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA114&dq=old+fuddy+duddy&hl=en&sa=X&ei=610aVJ2tIPWPsQTCrYGADw&ved=0CCoQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=fuddyduddy&f=false
From 1886 - with the current meaning, "The Triangular Society: Leaves from the Life of a Portland Family," By Elizabeth Akers Allen

Links and references
[edit]The following reference is totally unclear and devoid of any links: " (like Andrew Rosenblum, a HERU from Virginia Beach)" Who IS this Andrew Rosenblum? And what is a "HERU"? There was also no link to Ambrose Bierce's page; I inserted it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.143.185.250 (talk) 15:41, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
Disputed synonyms
[edit]I've removed this text from the article:
- "The terms fusspot, fusser, stick-in-the-mud, spoilsport, wet blanket, old fogy/fogey, stuffed shirt [1]"
Does anyone have access to this source? Fuddy duddies might be fussy, or stick in the muds, but spoilsport and wet blanket are very different things. Someone might be a fuddy duddy but far from being a wet blanket. --Dweller (talk) 12:13, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
