One of the five best governors of California, and sadly one of the most obscure.
In addition to the basic facts laid out in the main article, I would add that he and his wife's Quaker beliefs would not allow them to have servants at the Governor's Mansion.
He ran a classic, conservative, "no-frills" administration during his four years, frequently vetoing measures that would increase spending. His efforts left a $20 million surplus in the state treasury. Bob McArthur (talk) 20:53, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you've got a cite, please add it; thanks in advance. (Obviously, as a left-wing Quaker, I would disagree about your assessment of his administration, which steadily veered rightward, even though he was originally a Progressive.) --Orange Mike | Talk 17:05, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's something about that portrait makes me think "Real American". Someone who fights for the rights of every man. That's how I'll remember him, now that I know he existed. InedibleHulk (talk) 02:06, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alien gun law

[edit]

The 1923 law which Richardson signed that prohibited the possession of concealable arms by non-citizens was overturned in People v. Rappard (1972). The provision was subsequently removed from the California Penal Code (Section 12021). Tmangray (talk) 06:50, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
