[edit]- s:Picturesque_New_Guinea/Chapter_2#21: "On passing Percy Island No. 1 in the afternoon of the next day, the 22nd, Captain Lake mentioned that he knew the place well from a tragic incident that occurred there within his own knowledge. The captain has spent all his naval life on these coasts, and in the year 1854—some time before the separation of Queensland from New South Wales—the Government of Sydney sent out an expedition to make explorations along that portion of the territory. The party started from Brisbane in a cutter named the "Percy," and after making an inspection of various islands they came upon the one that was now in sight. As the place presented an inviting appearance, they all landed to make researches, with the exception of four men, who formed the crew of the little vessel. But they never returned, every one of them being murdered by the blacks. The geologist of the party, Mr. Strange, was a personal friend of our captain's, and the sad catastrophe was therefore stamped indelibly upon his memory. The island bears the name of the cutter, and the recollection of the tragedy is thus perpetuated."

... that Frederick Strange (pictured) sought to replace John Gilbert as the premier natural history collector in the new Australian colonies, then met a similar fate?- ALT1:
... that an expedition by plant and animal collector Frederick Strange (pictured) resulted in the deaths of twelve people?

- Comment: I went to stub this and link around to the taxa Strange had something to with—it's only tangentially related to my supposed focus—,but some spontaneous collaboration produced a short but interesting article with rich referencing [cheers again for @Oronsay: contribs]. The flaws are mine, and I haven't checked length or other criteria since my last nom, but there is a potential dyk here and I or any one else willing can get it ship-shape. P.S. I added an image, but that parameter has been sucked away by a bot?

- Thanks @Mandarax:, but the article is only getting more untidy as I work on and around it. I'm not sure it will be presentable and prefer to withdraw the nomination. Happy editing :) ~ cygnis insignis 11:06, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Cygnis insignis, are you sure you want to withdraw this? Many nominations hang around for a long time as people get things into shape. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 17:05, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, cheers. I'm busy with some ferocious beasties for little while, made urgent by our processes, but will attempt to get this article ship-shape soon. I doubt the picture is going to be seen a desirable part of the dyk, but its nice to put a name to the face. ~ cygnis insignis 17:12, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- BTW, alt 1 is not supported by the article, at least yet, a miserable business that needs more research. ~ cygnis insignis 17:15, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

- Striking both hooks: there is no mention of either John Gilbert (ALT0) or twelve deaths (ALT1) in the article even after the most recent revisions on 13 May. Cygnis insignis, do you think you'll be able to come up with a new hook that is supported by the article and its sources? Or would you prefer to withdraw the nomination? Please let us know. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:06, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- @BlueMoonset: Can't think of anything offhand, can you? ~ cygnis insignis 07:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Cygnis insignis, not with what's in the article now. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:44, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Cygnis insignis: Will you still be able to propose a new hook? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 06:01, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, but not anytime soon, it was an idle thought that I lost interest in. Sorry for any bother, please withdraw the nomination. ~ cygnis insignis 12:19, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
