Distance from Royal Tunbridge Wells
[edit]It is located on the Kentish border, about five miles (8 km) south of Tunbridge Wells.
Not so. As the crow flies, using the geodesic calculator at http://geographiclib.sourceforge.net, the distance is 3.72 km from the centre of Frant to the centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells. According to Google maps, the distance is 5.1 km by car; 4.8 km by foot; 5.1 km by push bike. Further, according to the Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Frant in 1887, Frant is 3 miles south of Tunbridge Wells, viz: 'Frant, vil. with ry. sta., E. Sussex, and par. (partly also in W. Kent) -- par., 8991 ac., pop. 3481; vil., 3 miles S. of Tunbridge Wells; P.O., T.O. (John Bartholomew, Gazetteer of the British Isles (1887))'
Further still, one reads this at the Vision of Britain entry for Frant at http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/3326:
'In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Frant like this:
"FRANT, a village in Ticehurst district, Sussex, and a parish and a sub-district in the same district, but partly also in Kent. The village stands 1¼ mile WSW of the nearest part of the Tunbridge and Hastings railway, and 3 miles S of Tunbridge Wells; and has a station on the railway, and a post office under Tunbridge Wells. The parish includes also Hawkenbury and part of Tunbridge Wells town. Acres, 8, 872; of which about 310 are in Kent. Real property, £13, 394. Pop., 2, 469. ...
Houses, 488. Pop. of the Kent portion, 307. Houses, 58. The property is subdivided. Bayham Abbey and Eridge Castle are here. See Bayham and Eridge. About 130 acres are under hops. There are quarries and mineral springs, a reservoir for supplying Tunbridge Wells with water, and a public fountain to the memory of the late Prince Consort. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester. Value, £800.* Patron, the Earl of Abergavenny. The church is good. The vicarage of Eridge-Green and the p. curacy of Broadwater are separate charges. There are national schools, and charities £23.—The sub-district is conterminate with the parish."'
