Nothing but twitter tweets as sources...Really?
[edit]Isn't there some kind of consensus that facebook, twitter, and other comments on the internet from random people (not counting official press statements given via social media) are unreliable sources? Literally anyone can write anything, some things can even be bot-made! This article certainly needs reliable sources (ex, archives, books, national museum websites...literally almost anything better than twitter)--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 20:30, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
New title
[edit]The title isn't great. It's inaccurate, because the article includes Arab volunteers who don't fall into one of the four listed ethnic groups. And "collaborationism" seems POV to me. Any objections if I move it to "Foreign volunteers in the Wermacht"? --Cerebellum (talk) 01:29, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
- Done --Cerebellum (talk) 01:14, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- It should be Foreign volunteers in the Wehrmacht. But this is already redirect to Wehrmacht foreign volunteers and conscripts. So maybe merge there? --Silesianus (talk) 20:33, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- Merge same topic. The distinction between volunteers and conscripts was somewhat fuzzy at the time. (t · c) buidhe 08:14, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- Merge, per buidhe. I also see no reason why Western European "volunteer" units should be dealt with in this article, especially since their "choice" was far freer than for most of the groups currently detailed. —Brigade Piron (talk) 15:00, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- I believe we should have an umbrella article covering both voluntary and conscript service, with an explanation of how voluntary it may have been for different individuals. (t · c) buidhe 18:54, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- Buidhe, I agree, and there may be some scope for dealing with "Allied" armies such as Croatia and Slovakia which were part of the German Army in all but name. This is the approach taken in, amongst others, Joining Hitler's Crusade: European Nations and the Invasion of the Soviet Union, 1941 and The Unknown Eastern Front: The Wehrmacht and Hitler's Foreign Soldiers. I'd also add that I really don't link the current list form, which risks being WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Some (most?) of the units listed were tiny, and a deceptive impression is provided by their current presentation. At a push, it might be necessary to create a separate article after the merger called German recruitment in the Soviet Union to mop up some of the minor contingents here. —Brigade Piron (talk) 08:18, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- I was wondering whether Waffen-SS foreign volunteers and conscripts should be folded in too, given that most of the Wehrmacht contingents eventually migrated to the Waffen SS? —Brigade Piron (talk) 10:58, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

- Not sure if this would be a good idea since many units were Waffen-SS from the start. --K.e.coffman (talk) 00:36, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
- K.e.coffman, I appreciate that but there were also variations on the theme, such as the Flemish Legion which originated as an "affiliated" SS formation and became part of the Waffen-SS only in 1943. I don't think the distinction is particularly significant historically - pretty much all foreign units had become SS by the end of the war and there is only really scope to discuss the reasons for this in a joint article. Equally, it would allow the similar tensions between foreign enlistment and Nazi racial theory to be discussed. —Brigade Piron (talk) 13:54, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

- I also note that there is a 4th article covering the same ground in Non-Germans in the German armed forces during World War II. —Brigade Piron (talk) 16:19, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
- Merge per Buidhe (I checked everything before !voting ke.coffman, so don't even think about it chap) - GizzyCatBella🍁 06:37, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
