Article name
[edit]Selecting an article name for this new article today was a bit challenging, 'cause Ford has used the "Lightning" model brand for (special only) F-150 trucks for at least a couple of decades; so other (pickup lines) truck models, all internal combustion models, are covered by the Ford "Lightning" moniker.
Also, the "F-150" model has been used by Ford for more than half a century, so hundreds of models exist.
Happy to have a discussion about if any better name for the article should occur to other editors. I just tried to select a name that was clear and natural (without parenthesis, as that seems to be preferred). Please propose. Cheers. N2e (talk) 00:33, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- N2e, first of all thank you for creating this article. My question... can we change the title to "Ford F-150 Lightning"? Currently its' getting redirected to a section of Ford F-150. - Hatchens (talk) 01:26, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- It's complicated. As that Ford F-150 page seems to, in reality, have three different F-150 Lightnings explicated in three different sections on the Ford F-150 page:
- Ford_F-Series#1993–1995 which summarizes the "main" article/section here: Ford_F-Series_(ninth_generation)#SVT_Lightning
- It's complicated. As that Ford F-150 page seems to, in reality, have three different F-150 Lightnings explicated in three different sections on the Ford F-150 page:
- Ford_F-Series#1999–2004 which summarizes the "main" article/section here: Ford_F-Series_(tenth_generation)#SVT_Lightning_(1999-2004)
- Ford_F-Series#Ford_F-150_Lightning_electric_pickup, which now should go to this article: Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, whatever it ends up being named.
- So might take a smarter editor than me; but if anything, Ford F-150 Lightning might simply require a new disambiguation page that somehow articulates all three of the various F-150 Lightnings that have been used over the years, each of which (conveniently) points to an entirely different Wikipedia article, which is exactly what disambig pages are for. And it seems Ford has used it in the 9th Gen, the 10th Gen, and now, in electric, in the 14th Generation of the F-150. What do you think Hatchens? — N2e (talk) 04:02, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- N2e, I'm surrendering. Hehehe. It seems to be too much complicated. But, wait... let me ping an expert @Timtrent: for a second opinion. - Hatchens (talk) 03:22, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Hatchens @N2e There is no correct answer save that a title that both differentiates from other models and is meaningful to the reader is the 'best' title to use.
- Where there is doubt, create a disambiguation page where one does not exist, or embellish an existing one where it does. Or create useful redirects. Or both.
- Consider what the reader may look for. "How will an inexperienced reader find this article?" is the question to ask
- I'm not really an expert, you know, but it feels nice to be referred to as one FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 06:17, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

After a bit of a problem earlier today—when this article was moved by two super well-intentioned editors (link to discussion) to point at only a single instance of the three F-150 Lightnings—we got that move turned around so that the disambig page might be created. Thanks Lennart97 and Saucy!
I have just now created the disambig page to link to all three of the F-150 Lightning models. See it here: Ford F-150 Lightning. Modify as you see fit to improve it. Pinging Timtrent and Hatchens. Cheers. N2e (talk) 23:09, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
- @N2e I think this makes sense. My only thoughts are a better differentiation (perhaps the series?) in the names given (in the disambig page) to the pages you disambiguate to might be the icing on the pickup bed FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 06:39, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
I think a better title would basically be how it is right now except with parentheses around electric pickup so it would become "Ford F-150 Lightning (electric pickup)" Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry and Wikipedia Editor (talk) 22:39, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
I honestly think it's fine to name the article "Ford F-150 Lightning". AFAIK no other truck had this exact model name. The previous trucks were called the "Ford SVT Lightning", right? We could have a disambiguation link to the Ford SVT Lightning at the top. --Vossanova o< 19:32, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
Better image
[edit]Hello! Would it be possible to use a different image of the truck on this page? Currently, the image on the page doesn't depict the truck very well (in fact, it depicts Joe Biden better than the actual truck) and it appears that the full design of the truck (uncamouflaged) has been revealed at this point. I think the relevant guideline here would be MOS:PERTINENCE ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:18, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

- Ford F-150 Lightning (electric pickup) → Ford F-150 Lightning
- Ford F-150 Lightning → Ford F-150 Lightning (disambiguation)
– There was already a discussion about this a while back (see the first section of this talk page). But that discussion didn't really come to a firm conclusion. I want to have an actual consensus here because I still feel like the electric truck is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC:
- All of the other uses of the term in the disambiguation page don't technically have the same name; they're called Ford SVT Lightning instead of Ford F-150 Lightning.
- All of the other uses of the term in the disambiguation page don't have their own article; they link to subsections of another article.
- The usage referring to the electric truck seems to be much more common than all the others:
- When doing a quick Google search for "Ford F-150 Lightning", all the results I saw were about the 2022 electric truck.
- Also look at Google Trends. Interest over the term has been much higher since the announcement of the electric truck. I downloaded the .csv file and did some calculations; the average "interest value" over the search term was about 8.5 before the announcement of the truck, and after the reveal the average interest value was 36.3. This is over 4x higher. Though, to be fair, there was a large spike in 2004 and 2005 when the old SVT Lightning was still being sold; but interest over the term was very low between 2006 and 2020.
But I don't know much about Ford or trucks, so maybe I'm missing something here. Saucy[talk – contribs] 06:19, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

- Support Appears to be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC compared to the older models. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:46, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Support, the older models are unambiguously known as SVT Lightning. 162 etc. (talk) 20:43, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Support, per others. The older models were indeed always called the SVT lightning and never just the "Lightning". Even if that weren't true, the electric pickup is definitely the primary topic now. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:31, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Support. Clear primary topic. Rreagan007 (talk) 01:54, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Article is missing recent history
[edit]Have seen a number of articles in the motor vehicle press about matters since the car went into production in April. Notable items include production volume limitations, dealers choosing to sell F-150 Lightning vehicles at multiples of the Ford mfgr price, and the matter of Ford announcing that it now intends to sell electric vehicles (eventually) directly to customers, without dealers as intermediaries, just like Tesla does.
None of this is reflected in the Wiki article, so there is room to improve the article. N2e (talk) 03:55, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
- Article is still badly out of date. With the truck in production and on sale now for more than 15 months, there is no info about how sales have gone? What happened to the 100,000 "reservations" that came in after the 2021 announcement when production started in April 2022? Are Ford Lightnings still in high demand? Are they widely available at US dealers and on dealer lots? How has real world performance been? Customer satisfaction? Article would be improved if any of this were mentioned with sources. N2e (talk) 04:37, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- What about the history of the Ford F150 Lightning when it existed three decades ago??? 96.59.161.250 (talk) 23:54, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- It means editors aren't interested enough to edit the article. Why not do it yourself? Nothing is stopping you... Andra Febrian (talk) 02:12, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I believe that Ford_F-150_Lightning_(disambiguation) has pointers to the previous sport F150. So it's basically the first link on the page. Regarding the missing recent history, that would be good to add I suppose, but I'm not familiar if that is normal for auto model articles. On the bright side, history should remain intact until someone gets around to authoring and citing any production and sales figures. D0li0 (talk) 03:38, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
