This page needs serious work

[edit]

"They burned their draft cards and created a hippy culture. They dressed in flowery clothing and wore flowers in their hair." You've got to be joking. Tagging this article for general clean-up. And the picture and caption?? "A bus covered with religious slogans and not a single flower"...FluxFuser (talk) 02:29, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The weird ponzi scheme reference needs some rationalization or better wikifying. Feel free to revert and rewrite. 70.177.68.209 01:52, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Female marijuana plants "flower" and therein lies the essence of the phrase flower power. Ginsberg knew well about which he spoke.

I've substituted a image of a anti-war protester which better shows the original symbolic meaning. CactusWriter | needles 20:40, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of the Term

[edit]

There has been some attempts to add other names claiming to have created the term "Flower Power," but these have been found to be without merit, without reliable sources, and usually self-promotional. Scholarly sources and reliable references all attribute the term "Flower Power" to Allen Ginsberg. The article has been rewritten and multiple reliable references added. The extraneous misinformation and promotional material has been excised. CactusWriter | needles 07:28, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Identity of young man in Boston photo

[edit]

The identity of this person remains in dispute. (for example, blog page) I have found no independent reliable source which has made a definitive confirmation. The Washington Post uses the term "most commonly identified" for George Edgerly Harris -- essentially indicating that other names are associated with the photo. Paul Krassner specifically identifies the young man as Super Joel Tornabene. I also noted that Jonah Raskin in his book For the Hell of It, The Life and Times of Abbie Hoffman, writes about Tornabene placing flowers in rifle barrels at the Pentagon protest. However, Raskin does not state that Tornabene is the man in the photo, so that source is an invalid reference here. I am including both names (with the cites) after a statement that the identity is disputed. IMO, this is the best solution unless/until a definitive statement in an independent RS reference is made. Original Research

[edit]

@Cocoswt:, your recent addition [1] has several problems. Besides the bad English and the broken markup, there are several violations of Wikipedia principles for article content. First, additions must be sourced to independent reliable sources. Neither of the 2 "sources" can be considered a proper source. Neither are particularly notable or scholarly. One [2] only uses the term as a title but doesn't discuss it and the other, a hardly notable online mag [3] doesn't even mention the topic of this article, the term Flower Power. The majority of your entry appears to be original research and/or personal commentary. As stated by another editor, you replaced "quality sourced content with opinion." Because of these problems, the additions have been removed -- three times now. They should not be restored until this issue is discussed and has been resolved by consensus opinion.
