Clarification requested re the checkmark comment

Starting from the sentence about the check mark, it isn't clear how much longer the discussion is about the check mark before returning to the subject of the flourish of approval. It also isn't clear just how comments about the two marks are meant to be tied together. A key element of the problem is "It is a quickly written": does "it" refer to the check mark just mentioned, or has attention already returned to the flourish of approval?

On the one hand, the sentence about the check mark could be a free-standing parenthetical. If it stands by itself, it should be wrapped in parentheses, perhaps reworded to say "(It corresponds to the check mark used internationally.)" Then it won't detract from understanding the following "it" to refer to the flourish of approval.

On the other hand, it seems the following sentence may be meant to refer to the check mark, to say that the check mark came from "V". If so, the transition to what follows is clumsy. Combined with what follows that, it appears that the intended gist could be 'The check mark is quickly written "V". The flourish of approval is also likened to a "V", having the alternate name "v-tje" (translation: "little vee"). According to Professor of New History Hugo de Schepper of Radboud University Nijmegen, it comes from the Latin word "vidit", which means "has seen".'
