Changes to Article (2013-04-21)
[edit]Rather than fill out the Edit Summary box, I've decided to list my changes here as there's a lot of them, and I wish to discuss the article's contents further. This is probably the most substantial edit I've made to a WP:USRD article so far, and since I consider myself a rookie at this thing still, I just want to run this past someone to make sure it's okay.
The changes I made:
- Removed the Historical Society links
- Rewrote the lead and Route description sections
- Added references for the historical highway
- Added some history references and rewrote history section
- Converted mileage into Straight-Lines Online-originated mileposts
- Changed western terminus
- Removed coordinates
Let's go through these in turn:
- Historical Society: My apologies go out to the Killian Drive Historical Society. The site does not work, nor does the archived versions. It seems to go to someone's private server (possibly a home server) that has since fallen into disuse.
- Lead and Route description: My bread and butter with me rewriting articles. Like always, I hope that this one will be sufficient.
- Historical highway: Although the Historical Society link was not working, the former reference provided me with a clue to where I could find the legislation enacting it. While I know how to reference legislation here in Australia, particularly that made in my home state of Queensland, I could not find something similarly readily available for Florida. I hope that I have referenced it adequately, particularly as I've cited it multiple times through the article; indeed, I hope that it's a good source for the purposes I've used it for.
- History references and rewrite: Apart from the Historical highway, I've found some local history articles and used them in trying to verify the information in the History section. There were parts that I thought were rather irrelevant to the topic of the article, so I removed them. Also, I summarised the section regarding the State Road designation - I think it's as old as the article is itself, and I thought it was written too prosaically; but as I could not find any other sources regarding it I've left it there and added a CN to it rather than remove it.
- Milepost conversion: Bread and butter. I've noticed lately that when I do a diagram of a State Road that partially covers the length of a road, it's been edited...I hope I'm doing it right in that case. Like most of the other articles I've been involved with, this is the area that holds back its progression to a higher class, so I can only hope that someone points me to where people have been getting the dates for designations from (i.e. why is 1983 so important and how can I verify that?).
- Changed western terminus: As I tend to use the SLD's as a literal guide to the road, I have changed SR 990's western terminus to reflect the one in its diagram and edited the article to suit. It does make the infobox look ugly though...
- Removed co-ordinates: It seems silly to me to have a coord marker for one single point along a whole road of many, many, many points...
If this discussion topic would be better suited on WP:USRD's Talk page, then please feel free to ship it/copy it there. Please also feel free to discuss this below or on my own talkpage. I just hope that I'm doing things "right", that's all. -DyluckTRocket (talk) 08:40, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- It looks good at first glance. This doesn't quite make B because there is some material that isn't cited, but you're getting pretty close. Be careful with self-published sources though - we usually look for sources published by well-known companies. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to come by WT:USRD or our chat room (see WP:HWY/IRC). --Rschen7754 08:46, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Rationale for Alternate Name
[edit]I am using the names "Killian Drive" and "Killian Parkway" as the Drive name is used by the Florida Senate in reference to the historical portion of the road and Parkway is the name on Google Maps. While "Killian" covers both of these names, it is not a full description of the road's name and is more of a nickname in the way that someone would say "Corner of Flagler and Miami" to mean "the intersection of Flagler Street and Miami Avenue." -DyluckTRocket (talk) 03:51, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
