How long is The Story of the Kelly Gang?

[edit]

This article states that it is "around 60 minutes" and also that it is 70 minutes.Originalname37 (Talk?) 11:35, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My Thoughts

[edit]

Hello, I'm working on an assignment for a college mass communications class, our first assignment is to critique an article and present our thoughts to the talk page. The page looks good so far and will make a good jumping off point for future expansion. I do think the article could be improved with the addition of some more info on modern feature film and more detail on the expansion and rise of film. Maybe talk about how the concept of a feature has changed over time, I know in the U.S. for instance early movie theaters were common criminal hangouts. The movie industry started to change the content of it's films to attract more general audiences, I'm sure there are lots of other details like this that have far reaching consequences throughout film history and connect to the industry today. we could also talk about production techniques and the changes and improvements made over time, and maybe look in to how the corpritization of the industry has changed the meaning of the term over time or it might not have had any effect. maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. I am looking forward to working with the community over the coming months. Evan Augst 14:40, 24 September 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evanaugst (talkcontribs)

@Evanaugst: Nice addition to the page! Prof.bgreg (talk) 12:31, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article Expansion

[edit]

Right now I am thinking of adding a new paragraph about early production methods and the technological improvements made over time. I am also building a list of sources to use for this. here is a link to my Sandbox where the list is compiled if you are intrested.Evanaugst/sandbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evanaugst (talkcontribs) 18:40, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for Improvement: Thomas McGuigan

[edit]

Hi Professor,

Attached below is the link to the "Feature Film" talk page which has my suggestions for corrections on Evan's Article.

New Additions

[edit]

I just finished adding a new section and two paragraphs focused on Technological improvements mad in film making techniques as well a picture I found on the Wiki commons website. I am still working on expanding into other aspects of the production process and will be adding more in the near future.Evan Augst 20:00, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

First dramatic feature

[edit]

"Defined by length, the first dramatic feature film was the Australian 60-minute film The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906)." Except the article indicates that a length of just over 40 minutes can be considered a feature and that there was a dramatic film of 44 minutes released three years prior. 128.151.71.16 (talk) 19:05, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@128.151.71.16: Yeah, and it says one sentence before that that there was a dramatic film produced months before that... Bywok! 22:44, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merger with Feature length

[edit]

I propose that feature length, being not notable enough a topic for its own page, be merged into (and redirect into) this article. — Hazzzzzz12 (talk) 02:53, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agree per reasoning above. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 18:04, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Merge Nowhere near enough content to have two articles... ~ HAL333 00:10, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agree per reasoning above. Bywok! 22:37, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have completed the "merge". Very little content was worth keeping from feature length, as it was all either uncited or repeated in this article already. The only content that was not transferred, but which might have value is the following two paragraphs:

Television movies and direct-to-videos may also be feature length. An episode of a TV series that has been extended may also be feature length. Such feature-length episodes are usually series pilots, holiday specials, or season finales.
Five-reel features became common practice in the industry in 1915. During the silent era a one-reel short ran for an average of 10 minutes, and a two-reeler (usually a comedy) for 20 minutes, thus a feature was around 50 minutes or more. Possibly due to competition from television, the average length of feature film increased from around 90 minutes in 1931 to almost 120 minutes in 1960.[citation needed]

Thanks all for your input. — HTGS (talk) 20:52, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitrary 'Length'

[edit]

In the header, it states that most feature-length films are between 75 and 210 minutes. Those numbers feel very arbitrary, and there is no source.

In my experience, films over 3 hours are relatively rare, and films under 75 minutes are still relatively common. 'Between 1 and 3 hours' or 'Between 60 and 180 minutes' would make more sense to me, although I don't really care what the exact numbers are, I just care that they're chosen for a reason. Redfordia (talk) 21:52, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I took the sentence out. It is not needed, and it should have a citation if we want to include it. Cheers! Doctormatt (talk) 21:39, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Elsewhere on the Internet, it says that features are of 45 minutes minimum. The 'mile long' rule-of-thumb (for 35mm) is resonable, but the conversion script in the article caps 1600 metres at 5200 feet. It should correctly be (at that length) 5,250 ft (1 mile = 5,280 feet).
