Initial text

[edit]

Although I am sure that this text comes out of the best of intentions, it is wholly inaccurate and it should not have been submitted without at least having someone in the field glance at it. Not only is it almost entirely incorrect where information is concerned, its tone and quality further trivialize a field historically marginalized by mysoginistic authorities who view fashion as a subject intrinsically confined to the feminine and therefore -- at best -- of nominal importance in the arts and academia.

The absurdity of putting Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield as fashion icons (normally fashion icons are famous for keeping their clothes ON)contributes to the distorted view of fashion held in so many contemporary sources. This contemporary view is largely the product of the feminist obsession with the condemnation of fashion as an evil perpetrated upon womankind by their male opressors and the Left's obsession with capitalist conspiracy that sees fashion as premeditated obsolescence used to enslave the masses, imagining, I suppose, that Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, not to mention L'Officiel de la Couture, are members of an international agency coordinated by .......? Since neither point of view distinguishes between paid and editorial points of view, or, for that matter, between Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, the discussion almost never progresses on to the infinitely more interesting issues of fashion as something unique to humans in the same way as written glyphs and phonemes and machines with moving parts are unique to humans; or of fashion as a language which communicates more than class dominance and the most blatant forms of seduction; or, of special note, of fashion as a language of different dialects mastered with various degrees of proficiency in the same way as other forms of linguistic expression are mastered. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.136.26.41 (talk) 04:32, 4 August 2003 (UTC)[reply]

Topic is updated

[edit]

I have updated this topic a bit because there was just too much incorrect data.

I am not happy yet with the final text but at least the info is now correct (and yes I am a specialist in the field of Arts and fashion). If I find the time I will rewrite it and add some more info.

Compare to haute couture

[edit]

There's a great deal of overlap between this article and haute couture (a much better article IMHO) - perhaps this heading should just redirect there? (Although it would be good to cover designers who do not do high fashion somewhere - designers for the mass market.) PKM 05:14, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding history

[edit]

I have done a first cut at an expanded History section; this still needs a lot of work (something on the 30s, 50s, 70s, and more on the 60s).

I have addressed the "fashion icon" issue by pointing up the relationships between Hepburn/Givenchy and Kennedy/Cassini.

I think the Modern section still needs NPOV, references, and restructuring.

Also, House of Worth is heavy on bio and Charles Frederick Worth is heavy on the business. Would be great if someone could cut-and-paste between them appropriately.

Additional hands welcome! PKM 20:19, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warmenhoven & Vanderbos

[edit]

Can someone confirm that this fashion house is actually as notable as the article makes them sound? The mention was added a long time ago in a suspiciously gushy edit at [1] that looks a little spammy, and was not edited out. The same IP also added this designer to the list of haute couture designers, but that info is not provided on their webpage. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 18:22, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am removing them until someone can provide a cite proving their notability and haute couture status. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 19:19, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They are as notable as the article says...I am that Ip number you talk about and it is not suspicious or spammy at all. I have rewritten that entire section ( so NO gushy edit) a long time ago and know what I am talking about after being in the business for 50 years. They started out with Couture and Single autonomic pieces and where the first who introduced a real conceptual way of approaching fashion crossing the borders of fashion and art....which went beyond the works created by for example Margiela or Comme des Garcons and the likes. Please reffrain from removing things if you do not know anything about the Fashion and Arts field and only find something suspicious because of a none article related thing like tracing my Ip number.

Stylists vs designers

[edit]

This was an excellent distinction, could it be emphasized in some way?

The types of fashion designer -- stylist versus designer -- are often confused. A stylist inspires his/her designs on existing things, trends and designers collections. A designer starts from scratch; he/she develops a unique concept and translates this into garment collections, other lifestyle related products or a statement in various other types of media.

I also edited the text that previously read:

designers are well trained pattern makers and modeleurs...

because frankly -after 27 years in the business- I've only met one designer who was technically competent to the extent that she could make her own patterns. That's not to say that a lot of designers don't think they can, or in fact do it but it's a rarity that their patterns don't need some clean up work from engineering pattern makers.

I'm new at wiki-ing so I'm not sure how to post my info if somebody wants to talk or throw things at me. I'm easily found via my blog at www.fashion-incubator.com hey, I just found the tilde thing, thanks Pattern maker 19:06, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad you liked my distinction between Designers and Stylist...maybe there are better ways to write it down but I think it covers what the difference between them is. The only problem can be that Stylist is the same as Designer when you look at it in the French language. Most of the time designers as mentioned in the article are referred as Createurs.

The pattern maker section: I am around 50 years now in the bussiness and most of the Createurs are trained pattern makers ( I am not talking about the amateurs like for example Stella McCartney or about the confection stylists) A good example can be found in Wim Wenders movie about Yamamoto. Unfortunatly I see that nowadays that this is more and more declining probably because of the fashion education is declining in this aspect and because so much "amateur" designers are flooding the industry.

fashion vs fashion designers

[edit]

In other art categories, the subject page is separate from the person/role. oy - this page needs works. Here's a plan - removed the redirect of Fashion designer from this page - add the couple of paragraphs about designers to the Fashion design page - for the rest of the article, put a merge to Fashion tag on.

design education other than US and London

[edit]

I think the Fashion Education section should include the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp, where the Antwep Six met. I think this school has a significant influence on the avante garde of fashion even to this day.

"Unknown to some, Antwerp is at the heart of continental Europe's avant-garde fashion scene. The driving force comes from the city's Royal Academy of Fine Arts..." [2],

"Belgian fashion designers are now beating their French rivals pins down. And the success is all due to one factor - the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts." [3],

"Jun 06: ...the renowned fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts" [4] etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.109.152.209 (talk) 16:02, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History of costume?

[edit]

Why the lack of costume history from earlier eras? The whole Wikipedia has a startling lack of costume history. Individual garments such as corsets are covered, but there's hardly anything on the costume of, say, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, etc... when the scholarship certainly is out there. Even my dad's dusty 50-year old encyclopedia has more information on pre-Victorian historical fashions than this page. I know, I know, I could create it all by myself, but I don't feel confident enough compared to people who specialise in the subject. --Snowgrouse 20:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject?

[edit]

I'm thinking about starting a WikiProject for Textile Arts that would include clothing, fashion design and the usual crafts (weaving, sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, lace, etc.). We basically need to find 5 editors who are interested in contributing. A WikiProject would allow us to use tags to monitor the progress of our field, using the Mathbot assessments, as Onlyabititalian seems to be asking for above. We could also make common templates, info-boxes and whatnot, and it might draw other textile-enthusiasts to us. I'd be willing to get it off the ground, programming-wise; are people here interested in joining? Thanks! :) Willow 10:28, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's a sign-up going on here; please consider signing up. In case you're wondering, there's no commitment for contributions, although we're hoping that members will want to work on ~1 article per month. Thanks for considering us! :) Willow 19:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

National Rivalry in the first paragraph?

[edit]

Guys this is not my area so I am not going to edit the first paragraph, but I strongly suggest you take away the whole bit about Italy leading in style over American and French fashion design. Completely unneccesary to define such national differences. Also, the statement is subjective at best and completely unverifiable at worst. Third, this does nothing to help define the term,"fashion design" to either the academic or lay public reading this article. In other words, this statement has no place in your article. I strongly recommend you rework this. Contact me on my talk page for ideas, if you like. THANKS GUYS! --{{subst:User:Skychildandsonofthesun/sig2}} (talk) 14:08, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why is there no mention of Belgium?

[edit]

Nothing is said about Belgium, meanwhile student from over the world are fighting to study at the Flanders Fashion Institute in Antwerp, and we produced some well-known names such as Olivier Theyskens (Rochas and Nina Ricci), Martin Margiela, Dirk Bikkembergs, Raf Simons (head designer at Jill Sanders), Stijn Helsen (Pirates of the Carribean & Spiderman) and Kris Van Assche (head designer Dior, mens collection), to name but a few. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.198.99.50 (talk) 20:16, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
