External links
[edit]The external links section is way too big. I would have trimmed it more as a function of the merging, but I didn't know where to start, having come here to learn about fantasy sport, not to write about it ;-) -- ke4roh 03:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
I don't think a detailed external links section is necessary. The DMOZ link should suffice. Detailed lists of game operators and news sites are necessarily a matter of either cruft or favoritism, and they have been a constant source of linkspam for as long as I've been watching this article (and long before, considering the huge number of non-notable sites that were listed back then).
As far as the fantasy sports "associations", they seem dubiously notable to begin with. If and when they have their own articles, that will be the appropriate place to link to their webpages.
--n6c 21:45, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I reduced the external links to DMOX and an industry news source. I also added links to the associations and beefed up those pages --- they are legitimate organizations. --FantasyHistory 06:24, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Userbox
[edit]With all the rediculous userboxes out there for addicts of such things like this, you would think I would be able to find a Fantasy Sports userbox. Something along the lines of This user is a Fantasy Sports Addict or this user is a Fantasy Football Champion, etc. --JAYMEDINC 19:40, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Criticism
[edit]I've removed this paragraph:
Other criticisms are regression of the mean, or if a player sets a record he should not be expected to repeat that performance again. Fantasy Football owners advertise that player the next year as a good buy.
Reasons: A) This assertion needs a citation: who makes this criticism??? B) It is also quite badly worded. (The phrase "Other criticisms are" is in the plural and then one thing is listed.) C) It is not clear at all that "regression of the mean" is a significant criticism. A citation or a good explanation would fix this last problem. Since it looks like an offhand observation thrown in without support, I'm removing it. The original author can add it back after cleaning up the wording and providing a citation. --Kartavyam 19:29, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

pre-Rotisserie history
[edit]My league lasted from 1978-1995 (and still exists as a yearly "contest"). We have always used current year stats, a point system, and daily roster changes. And we believe there existed leagues doing the same before us. Of course, citing our own league would be "original research" and we have no documentation of other leagues (only long forgotten rumors and references). We did, however, write an unanswered letter to the Rotisserie League Baseball publishers circa 1981-2 when we heard about their book.
Does this info make sense changing "innovation" to something like "popularized the innovation" in the Rotisserie section ??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.39.230 (talk) 01:29, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
differences and similarities, fantasy sports and simulations sports
[edit]I have been in a simulation (Strat-O-Matic) hockey league for 20+ years and when it comes up in conversation with outsiders both they and I find it easier to refer to it as a "fantasy league." If the topic is not changed I then find myself having to explain the differences between rotisserie-style fantasy sports (the subject of this article), which most people have some small knowledge of, and simulations, which is very much a niche hobby.
Nonetheless, becasue they are related, especially in the minds of folk not involved in either hobby, it may be worth mentioning in this article that there are two classes of things called "fantasy sports" and then explain the differences and similarities. Sadly, I do not have the time for what might turn out to be a fairly big project.
Or am I the only person to have this experience? 165.91.65.11 (talk) 22:28, 2 October 2011 (UTC)RKH
I'm only 35, but when watching some cable news report talking about 'fantasy' leagues and such, my 60 -ish y/o bother said 'BS! we did the same thing with each new season's baseball cards when i was 10.". now, i know that its not the same thing exactly, but shouldn't this be at least mentioned in the article. ive searched and can only find similar anticdotal evidence on message boards. with fantasy sport being so popular maybe someone more saavy could find some sources and integrate them into the article as 'not to be confused with' or 'similar to' or some such? Roughly speaking, what is one's mathematical expectation?
[edit]Lets face it: This is a form of gambling. Therefore, it is fair to ask, "How big is the house's take?", "What is the vigorish on these bets?", or, "What is my mathematical expectation?" My efforts at gaining any insight on this issue by searching have failed as the result of SEO by commercial interests. But surely some folks have already made some sort of effort to investigate this issue. I would certainly like get pointers to the results of any such research, and it also strikes me that such information would be relevant material for the article. I added two changes. The first one is an updated fact that shows how much money each person spends on fantasy points and how much is spent each year. The second one was adding the lawsuit to FanDuel and DraftKings. (Camryngrindle (talk) 18:11, 27 February 2018 (UTC))

Q: re-direct from "fantasy league industry"?
[edit]Howard from NYC (talk) 03:31, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
should there be an entry in wikipedia for when someone searches for "fantasy league industry" they will be jumped right into "fantasy sport"? might be overkill or a useful step saver
