National Register Information

[edit]
  • Any information listed on this page in reference to the NRHS should be listed in the appropriate section. This is still an article about the school and does not strictly focus on the Register. Cmcginni (talk) 02:40, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I beg to differ. The National Register listing is what makes the school notable. To have a better article, you need to weave the two together as I tried to do. Best wishes clariosophic (talk) 04:34, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point of view. Because the school is historic, there is a rich tradition surrounding the establishment that also needs to be expressed. The section on the NR could be moved up to give it higher presidence or mentioned in the opening paragraph as you did originally. Thanks for your help. Cmcginni (talk) 11:54, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yes, it would be good to mention in the lead paragraph, because that's where notability is established. You have a good start on the history. The interior court is an interesting feature that is not found in most schools of that time. Here is a Googlesearch on the architect William B. Ittner. You'll find that he was a prominent St. Louis designer of school buildings. Look around the outside of the 1928 building for the cornerstone or plaques on the walls that will give you more information on who was involved in the construction, e.g., the builder, school board members, etc. See what other resources you can find locally - in libraries, the historical society, genealogical society, school board records, older alumni, local historians, etc. Good luck and best wishes. clariosophic (talk) 13:24, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on all your hard work. The article is looking good. Best wishes clariosophic (talk) 02:22, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; I invite you to contribute any information you may find as well. You're advice was very helpful. Cmcginni (talk) 04:38, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fight Song Lyrics

[edit]

This is a minor point, but the page shows that the final line of FSHS' fight song is "Fight for ol' FSH". I believe that when the fight song was written, the school was more often referred to as "Fairmont High School" rather than "Fairmont Senior High School", and as such, the original lyrics were "Fight for ol' FHS". Those were the lyrics that I learned when I attended the school from 1987 through 1990. Even then, most folks (myself among them) referred to the school as "Fairmont Senior High" or "FSHS" or occasionally "FSH", but I'm unaware that the fight song lyrics were ever formally changed to reflect the modern nickname. To further complicate the matter, the page here has both versions! Does anyone know if the lyrics were ever officially changed? --JimBurnell (talk) 15:19, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The school that is the subject of this article is quite historic. This article has the potential to be a very high quality article. Unfortunately, it isn't. Nowhere near.

Large swaths of this article are not referenced. It appears some individual (or group, possibly connected with the school) have written a ton of unsourced, possibly original research, essay-like material about this school here. While I'm sure this was done with the best of intentions, that is not what an encyclopedia article is supposed to be.

Encyclopedia articles are to be constructed entirely (not mostly, not some, not only the key facts - entirely) from material paraphrased from already published reliable sources. A school history collection housed in the school's library is alluded to in the article. Materials housed in such a collection, with the exception of already published books, magazine articles or newspaper clippings, cannot be used here.

The language used in this article is entirely too flowery. See the guidelines referenced in this section's title for guidance.

Be advised the content guidelines for school articles suggest that we do not name students or staff. Other than figures associated with the school's early days, I see no reason to deviate from that here. There is no reason to mention any teacher or coach, past or present.

This article is currently a mess. I cannot do the research needed to improve it. I can however, cut the unsourced material and copy edit the fluff. I'd rather see someone who maybe can clean this up work on it. I'll ping Coal town guy who has done a ton of work on West Virginia topics to see if he can help, but frankly, most of the clean up is probably going to need to be done by the editors that originally created this. Thanks. Ping me if you need anything. John from Idegon (talk) 04:18, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OKEY DOKEY, my suggestion would be exactly that of John from Idegon. The entire article is a wordsmith of the NRHP forms as well as otyher sources which adter looking at 5 of them, this is almost entirely close paraphrasing. Not tio be harsh, but it looks like 70% of this article needs to be deleted.BECAUSE my next step as an editor is to go in and start placing close paraphrasing tags like a bodily functionCoal town guy (talk) 17:31, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that both John from Idegon and Coal town guy are correct. The entire section of Fairmont Senior's history section and a large portion of the National Registry should be deleted. Most of that information is unsourced and unverifiable. Can those portions of the article be deleted? CarterGrad (talk) 3:02, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

THIS HAS TO STOP

[edit]

OK, for wikitravel purposes, alot of this article is just that, and its close paraphrasing. FOR AN ENCYCLOPEDIA, its not relevant.I fully expect to read about somebodys date with Mary Jane Rotten Crotch any moment now and this has to stop please. Stick to facts. Date of FSHS's original establishment?

[edit]

I found a source that said that FSHS was established in 1897 in the Second Ward Building. However, the original Wikipedia article stated that FSHS was established before that. Does anyone know about FSHS's establishment? NaturalSoundsYEAH! (talk) 18:25, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Inscriptions

[edit]

Is the inscriptions section and pictures needed? NaturalSoundsYEAH! (talk) 18:16, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

At this point it doesn't look like they really fit. As the article expands and develops, a more thorough facilities or campus section could include one of the inscription pictures and a mention of them. Because the building is listed on the NHRP, a section about architecture would be appropriate (or a separate article about the building itself). If this were just about the school, such a section likely wouldn't be appropriate since the article isn't about the building. There is already a link to the Commons page at the bottom. --JonRidinger (talk) 15:42, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
