[edit]I don't see any reason to have a separate article for this individual - his name already appears as a former chair of Legal Services Corporation, and this article adds nothing new to that item. Tvoz |talk 05:24, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
anti-promotion message
[edit]When I made my latest edit to this article (to add the link to McCalpin's obit in the New York Times), a message from Wikipedia flashed up on the screen:
"Your edit has triggered a filter designed to warn editors, organisations and companies against using Wikipedia as an advertising medium.
Wikipedia is foremost an encyclopedia, and not a vehicle for advertising or promoting organisations, companies or individuals. If that is not your intent, we apologize. However, before you continue you may wish to review Wikipedia's guidelines on conflict of interest and external links, as these may help you decide whether the information you want to include is appropriate for Wikipedia. You may also wish to check Wikipedia's username policy, which prohibits promotional usernames. Please feel free to ask at the Help Desk if you have any questions. If you're sure you still want to make this edit, go to the bottom of this page and click 'Save page' again, and it will be submitted as is. If you believe you received this message in error, you may report this error. "
I am assuming that the message was triggered by confusion between my name and the name of the subject of the article; my name is also William McCalpin (although William J., not F. William) - I am F. William McCalpin's nephew.
I have made a number of entries to Wikipedia on perhaps a couple of dozen pages, and I think I am starting to get the hang of how things work ;-). In this case, I think the filter misunderstood the reference to appear to be self-promotion when the reference is clearly to my uncle. I would argue with anyone that if my uncle - who was a life long resident of St. Louis, Missouri - received an obit in the New York Times, that this is a prima facie case for the validity of both the link and the article as a whole.
