Merge header

Per the above, Extraocular muscles should not merge into Muscles of the orbit. "Extraocular muscles" is typically used to describe the six muscles that control the eye movements; however, the levator palpebrae superioris and superior tarsal muscle are literally "extraocular". Contradictions?

Under the heading "Actions", it is said that superior oblique and inferior oblique ABDUCT the eye (move the eye laterally). But under the heading "Paths - Two with more complex paths", superior oblique and inferior oblique is said to move the eye nasally (medially, ADDUCT). Can someone clarify? The actions of the extraocular muscles depend on the position of the eye when the muscle contracts. The superior oblique intorts the eye when the eye is abducted (looking away from the nose). When the eye looks towards the nose (adducted), the superior oblique depresses the eye. The inferior oblique is similar; it extorts the abducted eye, and elevates the adducted eye. Hope that helps. Mnemonic section

There seems to be some controversy regarding whether a section on mnemonics is appropriate for wikipedia. I did not remove the content, but to me, it does seem out of place in an encyclopedia. Other thoughts? Rytyho usa (talk) 06:46, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Better picture needed

Illustrations are incorrect.

The picture titled "Schematic demonstrating the actions and cranial nerve innervation (in subscript) of extraocular muscles." has the actions of superior and inferior recti wrong. They adduct the corneas, which is even stated in the chart below. File:Extraocular muscle actions and innervation.png

Intraocular muscles

Intraocular muscles? Do they exist?

If not, why not just “ocular muscles”; if so, where are they on Wiki?

Well...yes...there 'are' (technically) muscles inside the eyeball. See Ciliary muscle. However, it is extremely uncommon to use the phrase "intraocular muscle", to the extent that it would immediately indicate that the person using the phrase doesn't understand very much about the anatomy of the eye, because it is an very atypical muscle with an atypical origin, insertion, action, innervation, etc...
