Potential confusion with Exeter College in Devon, which is not related to Oxford University. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.198.123.117 (talk) 22:17, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Stapledon

[edit]

Belle Fast I have reverted this edit, which names Richard Stapledon as a founder of the college, because it is unsourced. The college website names only Walter de Stapeldon. TSventon (talk) 18:34, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Belle Fast, thank you for adding references to the DNB and 1911 Britannia. Both sources should be used with caution as they are a hundred years old, but their wording suggests that Walter was the founder, assisted by his brother. The more recent History of the University of Oxford says Walter Stapledon , bishop of Exeter , with the help of his brother Richard , founded the economy of Exeter College on the tithes of a Cornish rectory and a handful of Oxford properties.[1] TSventon (talk) 11:42, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
