Inconsistent page title

Shouldn't this page be titled in the same manner as the pages for the previous events? (That is: "Eurovision Song Contest 2008".) I tried moving the page myself but it seems to be protected, so I'm a bit confused about the title. --Starylon 21:12, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Yea, i requested it to be unlocked and have now moved it. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 10:47, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Palestine

Palestine isn't a member of EBU, is it? If not, it's not possible for them to compete next year. Isber 22:56, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

would be nice... hmm should we se: "And finally Israel gives 12 points to... Palestine!" ;) --chandler 23:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
That would be wonderful indeed. The world would become so much better that same day! (Lithdoc 23:18, 12 May 2007 (UTC))
LOL! Erm, gawd...another 10 acts, soon enough, they'll just stick em all in a Final which would run for about 4-5 hours, but'd show who's the strongest European nation. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 23:17, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Palesitne isnt a country. It would be like saying Kosovo will be in Belgrade 2008. Mislim svasta....
Palestine is a occupied country, recognized by some countries -> --chandler 00:10, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Palestine might join [1]
Palestine probably will enter, and i think if they enter it'd be more political than ever! ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 16:18, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps, but political in what direction? I mean, who had expected that Turkey's 12 points would go to Armenia? AecisBrievenbus 21:42, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Well i made a logo, but it's not that perfect so someone can do a re-make or something, until a official comes up. If they don't change the format of the logo until next year it should look like it does now... i think --chandler 00:12, 13 May 2007 (UTC) Not it says Beograd not Belgrad... (:D) --chandler 00:21, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

The "small coat of arms" might end up being even smaller, but let's not worry about that yet. --Bolonium 05:46, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
RTS seems to made a mock-up of the logo![2] You are right about the coat of arms being smaller. 159753 11:02, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

It costs a bit to get it, lol... Anyone got a copy!?! ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 17:28, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
It does look good, but unfortunately it's a pretty clear example of speculation, if not original research (and potentially a copyright issue, too). We don't know what the final logo will look like, and I have put a generic ESC logo in the article instead until an official one is released. However, I'll go ou t on a limb and post Xhandler's logo here on the talk page, and we'll see how close it was whenever the official logo is unveiled! ProhibitOnions (T) 15:37, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Well if they don't change the style.. It probably will look like that, maybe some changes in the flag and text size and so on ;) --chandler 13:05, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Just a point... if they go for the English version of Beograd it is Belgrade NOT Belgrad. CKnight16 15:24, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

The logo for next year is on the eurovision.tv site. It's on a link through to the company that makes them. I have it. WestJet 23:27, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Kazakhstan

I had it from the Dutch Wikipedia: nl:Eurovisiesongfestival 2007#Geruchten Eurovisiesongfestival 2008: Marokko, Kazachstan, Slowakije en Libanon zouden aan het Eurovisiesongfestival 2008 willen deelnemen. or "Morocco, Kazakhstan, Slovakia and Lebanon would want to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008." Rumours and speculations are not enough to warrant inclusion, and wiki's are no reliable sources. AecisBrievenbus 00:30, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Indeed, but we warrant nothing, that's just the case, because we use the word "possibly". Belgian man 13:14, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Semi-Final

Should we have a list of countries in the Semi-Final as well? They have not confirmed that they will partipicate, but the Final countries haven't either.--90.224.50.167 09:27, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, i like the lists of the countries, but it'd make the page neater if they were in 2 columns. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 16:18, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Lebanon

if you ckeck their page on 'Countries at the Eurovision Song Contest', it says that their banned until 2009,so they have no chance of appearing in 2008 and little chance ofappearing at all if Israel chooses to participate.

That's what i'm thinking, It's against Lebannese laws to broadcast Israili material (something like that) and of which is against the ESC rules.. - Doctorwho12
Yes, i think that the people who want Lebanon in though, will show the Israeli entry anyway. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 16:18, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Someone keeps adding Lebanon as a possible future partipicant. I will delete it again as EBU has banned them until 2009.--90.224.50.167 18:27, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
WHY are we not aloud to delete Lebanon? EBU has made clear they must not partipicate until 2009.--90.224.50.167 18:38, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, i did this and left a message saying do not change unless you can give a <ref>Reference</ref>. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 16:18, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Can we not write about countries withdrawing until someone goes on record directly as saying it, there are too many unfounded rumours around at the moment. TF100

I agree, but i think that if you look at the article, ignoring ADRy07's changes, we are citing our references quite nicely. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 19:07, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
I also agree. The idea of Ireland withdrawing is ridiculous, but, true or not, can we avoid speculation until someone from RTÉ says something definite? Iain 00:00, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

I agree... speaking about Andorra's potential withdrawl, this is completely unfounded... in fact the head of the Andorran delegation has gone on record as saying (and I quote) "it's too important to promote Andorran music". All this talk of possibble withdrawls is speculation, hightened by some countries' disappointments after the 2007 contest. Let's wait until December when a list of applicants will be published by the EBU. (CKnight16 15:05, 27 May 2007 (UTC))

Slovakia

Why do we reference Slovakia by linking to Slovakia in the Eurovision Song Contest? First of all, Wikipedia doesn't qualify as a reliable source. But most importantly, the mention in that article isn't referenced, so we're creating a false reference in this article. AecisBrievenbus 00:06, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

I accidentally pressed enter before I had even started my edit summary, so I´m posting it here. The mention in Slovakia in the Eurovision Song Contest isn't cited, which means that it isn't cited here. I have removed this reference, and added a {{fact}} tag. AecisBrievenbus 21:32, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
That's cool, i mean, it was me who did it originally! ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 18:29, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Can Slovakia be removed from the definites list? They are not definite yet... just interested... it's not the same thing. CKnight16 15:45, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

This is from the Nederland Wikipedia: Zeker: Slowakije doet weer mee It means, the Participation on ESC 2008 is sure. --85.216.113.255 10:35, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Possible new/returning participants

I see that a load of countries have been added to the section #Possible new participants. I understand Azerbaijan, who are actively seeking to join the Contest. But Kazakhstan, which has declined to join the EBU, thus declining to enter the Contest? Afghanistan? Tajikistan? Saudi Arabia? Turkmenistan? Uzbekistan? Vatican City? And is there reason to believe that Italy, Luxembourg and Monaco might return, enough to add them to #Possible returning participants? AecisBrievenbus 17:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

After looking at the article's history, I understand how the load of "Possible new participants" was added. But that still leaves Italy, Luxembourg and Monaco. Is there sufficient reason to believe at this particular moment that they are considering returning? If there are no active plans to return to the contest, why should we mention the countries? AecisBrievenbus 17:58, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
I suggest that we remove all the countries for now, and review all the countries on a case-by-case basis. Those who are actively considering joining/returning to the contest (e.g. Slovakia, Palestine, Azerbaijan) get listed, those countries that have no active plans to join the contest are left out until the moment they develop plans to join the contest. There's no point in adding the names of countries if there is no reasonable likelihood that they will join. Any thoughts? AecisBrievenbus 18:10, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Reading what you've said, I feel that mentioning them (Italy, etc.) is good, as it shows how the contest could expand again if these countries return. Who added Vat. City, etc?! Some don't even have their own TV/Radio station... ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 18:28, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, but that can be mentioned in the article Eurovision Song Contest. At the moment there's no reason to believe that many of these countries will return in 2008, which this article is about. AecisBrievenbus 18:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
I think for the moment, before the contest and announcement of countries participating in 2008 in December 2007, we should leave it as it is, because then we can clear it up after the countries have been announced. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 19:47, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Hmmmm... I think Monaco should still be somewhere on the list (at least for the time being). TMC screened the 2007 contest live, which is a prerequisite to competing the following year and I seem to recall that Phil Bosco (head of the Monagasque delegation) said at the time of the 2007 withdrawl that he did think Monaco had a future in this contest. I can't remember how or where I know that from though. Did Monaco not say at the time of their 2004 return that if they couldn't find a song they wouldn't take part... maybe Monaco withdrew in 2007 because they couldn't find a suitable song and it wasn't about voting patterns at all. I think we'll see the following debuts / returns in Belgrade (ordered strongest to weakest) - Azerbaijan, Monaco, Slovakia, Luxembourg, San Marino. I have a feeling that RAI (who own a large stake of SMRTV, will sound out a return to the contest for Italy through San Marino... maybe not in 2008, but at some point in the near future. I think a return of Italy to the 2008 contest is pure fantasy sadly. CKnight16 15:17, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Netherlands

Please stop saying the Netherlands will withdraw, it has been said in no uncertain terms that they will not - http://www.belgovision.com/en/index_f.php?id=2696 —Preceding unsigned comment added by TF100 (talkcontribs)

I know a Wikipedia article is not the proper places for personal opinion and interpretation, but the moment someone says that "we will never ever ever [insert activity]," it's time to become cautious. He's wrong about the viewing figures though: About half a million people watched the final in the Netherlands. That's about half the number of people who viewed the semi-finals, and one third to one fourth of the number of viewers in recent years. AecisBrievenbus 18:47, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
I have reworded it to include both the claim/remour and the denial. The RTL Nieuws link was a poll among the Dutch about whether the Netherlands should compete, and is not directly related to whether the Netherlands will compete. AecisBrievenbus 18:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

References

What happened to the references section? It exists in the source code, but not in the article.--90.224.50.167 10:58, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

The reference to the mention of the Netherlands and Austria not withdrawing was not closed properly. It used <ref> instead of </ref>. Thanks for the heads up. AecisBrievenbus 11:11, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

"Doubtful"

Is there any real need to write "(doubtful)" next to Italy and not next to say Luxembourg, who have expressly said they will NEVER return for example, whereas Italy have never been so direct... whoever has chosen which ones are 'doubtful' or not seems to have a slightly skewed view of things..

i agree, and personally i think that Italy may well return, but i don't think we should make the decision. (217.42.46.119 21:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC))

Vatican City

Vatican City actually has a TV station that is member of the EBU, Radio Vaticana.--90.224.50.167 18:28, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Isn't Radio Vaticana just a radio station? TF100 18:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
No, it seems in the article that they have a TV network as well. I don't think they will enter, but they sould stand under "Possible partipicants".--90.224.50.167 18:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
They should not stand under "Possible partipicants" because they are not "possible partipicants"... face it --81.216.72.22 08:21, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Vatican City may not be likely, but at this moment it is still possible, because the deadline has not yet passed. Vatican City is already an EBU member, so all they need to do is assemble six bishops and a nun and get a televoting system in place. AecisBrievenbus 14:55, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Actually, it's true. Vatican City is an EBU member, but it doesn't have a tv station/channel, which is a prerequisite to joining the ESC. Vatican City only has a newspaper and a radio station. AecisBrievenbus 23:42, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Rest assured, the text about Vatican City has been edited at 13:02 UTC today. AecisBrievenbus 17:22, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Where would the Vatican get any pints from? I don't think it's fair to keep jokin about the pope but imagine if they won, the contest would have to be held in St Peters Square. Face the facts, the most likely possibility is Italia as they would automatically qualify, and be part of the "big 5" along with Germany, UK, France n Spain. (217.42.46.119 21:18, 18 May 2007 (UTC))
We're going horribly off-topic now, but is it a set rule that the winner hosts next year's contest? Israel won in 1979, but declined to host the ESC in 1980. The contest was eventually held in the Netherlands. Same for 1960, 1963, 1972 and 1974. AecisBrievenbus 21:52, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
If Vatican City gets in, will San Marino and Italy come back? I want Italy to come back in the contest!!!
I also hope Italy returns, San Marino would be a newcomer though. ¡иąтнąи! | Talk | Email| 07:12, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Vatican City does have a TV channel (streamed here) but it appears to be exclusively for religious services to be recorded live and sent across the world. Presumably this is why they are a member of the EBU so they can use the Eurovision Network to screen events such as the Pope's Funeral etc. So it's unlikely they'll ever join Eurovision!--Gottago 10:21, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

None arab countries would be present

Countries like Algeria, Tunisia and Lybia have boycotted the contest for years because of the Israeli participation... So is almost impossible that this countries will ever enter plus they havent broadcasted the event for like 30 years.

The government of Morocco had also boycotted the contest. So they will return when they have a change in government

So, please STOP listing every EBU member as a possible participant

Italy is very unlikely to return too.. and the San Marinese broadcaster is controlled by the italian media..

The only countries that are most likely to return now are Slovakia and Monaco. And Luxembourg, ONLY if Tango TV becomes an active member

Andorra

Andorra is not withdrawing - the head of its broadcaster has said it is the only international forum for Andorran music. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin Leng (talkcontribs)

Where did you get this info from? As far as I'm aware Andorra hasn't clarified their position except than to say the Contest is important in promoting Andorran music. That doesn't mean to say that they're definitely entering, although it does seem to make it quite likely they will. However for the time being it's nothing more than speculation. CKnight16 15:43, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Faroe Islands and Greenland

If you're mentioning countries such as Libya, Kazakhstan, Morrocco etc as possible participants, then surely both the Faroe Islands and Greenland much go down as possible participants. Both of these are geographically situated in Northern Europe not to mention being Danish owned. Everyone knows how much Scadinivians love the ESC. and I read somewhere that 70% of the population of the Faroes watched the Eurovision Final on TV. This shows that in these countries public interest is high, so surely a debut in the ESC is at the least possible? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skeggy tom (talkcontribs)

They can't participate, as they are owned by Denmark and participate as Denmark, I don't know whether they have there own personal channel to watch it on, besides Libya, Kazakhstan and Morocco are independent and have EBU membership and TV station that can broadcast it. AxG @ 18:59, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
They can't enter, for the same reason that the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Gibraltar or Åland can't enter - they may be classed as countries, but they are not wholly independent states. In reality they are represented by either Denmark, the UK or Finland. Furthermore, they have no tv station, which is an EBU member (except Guernsey and Jersey under Channel Television) 62.172.213.1 09:48, 22 June 2007 (UTC) 09:47, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

San Marino

  • This should be on the Wikipedia Eurovision 2008 site as well: San Marino: "Participation possible", please click te link: [3] ; then there will be a country again participating in the Eurovisionsongcontest that speaks Italian! Eurovisie... 17:46, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

  • About San Marino: Where exactly do people keep seeing that SMRTV have explicitly said not in 2008? I was the one who wrote that article on ESCtoday, it was me who was corresponding with them, and they said no such thing. It merely says it may be unlikely that the stockholders will go along with it... TF100 22:40, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
  • They said it was very unlikely, and its already too late to start negotiations on a first participation. Cmon, face it.. San Marino won't compete, they have tell this story before.

San Marino will join the ESC. But not in 2008.

Lebanon

Lebanon has organised and hosted Miss Europe with an Israeli entrant before, and is by far the most liberal "Arab" nation (it's 50% Christian anyway)! So please stop casting aspersions upon Lebanon. TF100 11:43, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

  • You are right about Lebanon being the most liberal arab nation, but not because people is liberal, it means their government also is (look at the United States, too). Remember Tele Liban is owned by the government, so they are the ones that don't want to broadcast the Israeli performance. It has nothing to do with how open-minded the people is. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tony0106 (talkcontribs).

Belgium

  • Why has Belgium had its confirmed status taken away? VRT have already set in motion their selection process, which in turn means they are confirmed as taking part surely. CKnight16 15:09, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Israel

Can someone please suggest what will happen if Israel withdraws? Will the Arab countries participate then?As far as i know,IBA is likely to pull out of Eurovision, and for the other channels it needs time to be members of Eurovision...So how much is likely Tunisia,Egypt,Syria,or any other country to participate,if eventually Israel withdraws? Is Israel 'disappointed' of ESC?Is that the reason they want to withdraw, because they dont see Eurovision to be in their national television as it used to be?

  • I think it's a case of Israel doing a bit of an Italy or a Luxembourg. They probably don't like the fact that they aren't in the final every year and also that they have to pay to take part, when Israeli audiences for Eurovision are declining. I think it's a shame if IBA decide to withdraw permanently from the ESC as they've had many great entries over the years. Maybe another Israeli broadcaster will join the EBU and pick up where IBA leave off. As for the Arab countries, well I'm pretty sure none will take part in 2008. When 2009 comes around and if Israel doesn't take part in that edition I'd be pretty sure you'll definitely see Lebanon take part especially as TLB's 3 year ban comes to an end in 2009. Egypt might also decide to take part in 2009 - there was some talk of a possible Egyptian participation in 2005, but it amounted to nothing. As for the others, I think it depends on what their governments request of them - don't expect anything soon, but maybe Morocco would be top of the list with Tunisia next and I'm pretty sure Libya and Syria would be at the bottom. There is people saying that San Marino already confirmed participation, OGAE Italy is reaching agreements with RAI, Morocco is going to enter with a new broadcaster. Is this just some kind of joke? If it is real, then you must PROVIDE THE SOURCES. The indicator "DO NOT TOUCH UNLESS IT IS TRUE AND A SOURCE IS PROVIDED" means you cannot write any information if you don't have the source to prove the truth. and "DO NOT REMOVE ANY SOURCES" means you should not remove authentic sources posted by other users.

STOP making up stories about debuting and returning countries, every time you post something without a source it would be instantly removed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tony0106 (talkcontribs).

True, but I might have said it in a lighter tone - also please remember to sign your comments on talk pages. Thank you. Camaron1 | Chris 15:26, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

True, but sources should be original and not all from one Eurovision fan site. For example news on Azerbaijan and Slovakia were broken by ESCKaz and not ESCToday. Zaqqq 04:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Ireland

Will be present in Belgrade...and this time will be represented by Johny Logan.I think we should put Ireland out of withdrawals list.

ANDORRA

Will not withdraw. The Andorran head of delegations confirmed that the contest was "too important to promote Andorran music", so at the time it seems unlikely that they will leave either.Link: http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/8718
