Proposal to split Park51 to Ground Zero controversy

[edit]

Hi. You're receiving this message because you recently edited Park51. Ed Poor has proposing splitting that off part of that article to create Ground Zero controversy. We're discussing it on the talk page here and would appreciate your feedback. Raul654 (talk) 23:49, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear ProhibitOnions,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Young, the missing talk page

[edit]

Now that the article on Paul Young the singer (and guitarist) has been moved to Paul Young, wouldn't it be a good idea to move Talk:Paul Young (singer and guitarist) to Talk:Paul Young? I tried doing it myself, but this is an admin-only thing, it seems. Regards, Several Pending (talk) 15:46, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops! My bad - thanks for pointing that out. It's fixed now. Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 16:55, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A request to enjoin discussion at Talk:McKinsey & Company

[edit]

Hi there! I hope this doesn't annoy you, but I'd like your input. As part of his request for mentorship, I've been interviewing User:King4057, a new user who self-identifies as a paid editor. We have been discussing issues of COI and neutrality and McKinsey & Company came up. The user seems to think that edits you made on talk and to pagespace represent a bias one way or the other. I ask, because the user is relatively new and inexperienced, you forgive his characterization of you and your edits. You are under no obligation to honor that request. If you'd like to provide your input, I'd very much like to understand what was happening and what your thinking was. Here's a link to the discussion. BusterD (talk) 14:29, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Adminship Anniversary

Boeing 737 Max or "Boeing 737 MAX?"

[edit]

You seem to be convinced that the aforementioned article should not have the "MAX" in all-caps. Please explain your view on this at the 737 MAX talk page. Thanks, Compdude123 16:17, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Others have replied to your comments. There seems to be a consensus to have the "MAX" be in all-caps, but I'd like to see you reply to my comments and those of other users. Thanks, Compdude123 02:32, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're an admin; could you please act like one? Most admins I've seen on this Wikipedia do not engage in edit warring, or going against consensus. Please discuss this on the talk page, I really don't see a need to make a big deal over just one word. —Compdude123 22:49, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just to add, two other admins have reverted your move of this article. And plus there is a clear consensus on the talk page to have the MAX capitalized. —Compdude123 22:51, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please refrain from personal attacks. The "consensus" you refer to is based on reasoning such as "I think most people would", "People seem to abide by the MOS way too much", and an appeal to the "official" use ("He told me the Boeing official name is MAX, not Max"), none of which holds any water. ProhibitOnions (T) 06:51, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for getting mad at you like that. I was just frustrated that we were still having this same stupid argument in the first place. Can we just settle this and move on, please? Comment on the talk page. Thanks, Compdude123 15:47, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please explain to me how a statement such as "People seem to abide by the MOS way too much" is not a good argument? It's true; I think people sometimes treat the MOS like it's a law that must be followed all the time. For pity's sake; the MOS is just a guideline, and it should be treated with common sense! —Compdude123 18:09, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Puhdys1.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Puhdys1.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:27, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Query: damage to articles

[edit]

Hi - as you seem to know your way around this site, can I ask for some advice - having spent yesterday struggling to deal with another editor who repeatedly filled the article on the Olympics Opening Ceremony with inappropriate capitalisation and titles contrary to WP guidelines, I see he's spent today doing the same to another article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_of_sovereignty_over_Hong_Kong). I don't want to get dragged into another edit competition with him - how best to address (if at all), please? IanB2 (talk) 19:41, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The first step is usually to take it to the talk page, though you should go to that user's talk page as well - if someone's violating Wikipedia policies, you should point this out (though remember to assume good faith); quite often, people don't know they're doing something wrong (especially if new to WP), or can be persuaded to stop. If the user violates the three-revert-rule (ie, changes something back to a preferred version more than three times in 24 hours), you should report this on the 3RR notice board - an admin will then assess the situation and usually block that user for a cooling-off period, provided that you have first tried contacting the user. (Note that although I'm an admin, I can't block someone if I've been editing the article in question.) If you're talking about User:Laggan Boy, he has already been warned; but the hope of Wikipedia is that someone willing to make this many edits will be encouraged to go the extra distance to make them constructive. You should also note that 3RR applies to all editors who revert too often, regardless of the merit of their edits (unless it's clear vandalism, a violation of WP:BLP, etc.). Hope this helps. Good luck - ProhibitOnions (T) 20:06, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:TD1logo.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:TD1logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. ITN

[edit]

Where was the discussion on your recent ITN posting regarding the papacy? --Bongwarrior (talk) 22:25, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was none. WP was late to add this, or indeed anything else to ITN in the last two days. I was being bold. ProhibitOnions (T) 22:34, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Too bold. All postings must have consensus at WP:ITN/C before being posted. This is not optional. Because it was undiscussed, I've removed it. You may want to propose it on the candidates page, or weigh in on a similar nomination that is already ongoing. --Bongwarrior (talk) 22:38, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Weak. The event, announced nearly a month in advance, happened four hours ago, and we're still discussing whether to post it. Meanwhile, our top story is two days old. Hence, BOLD. ProhibitOnions (T) 22:44, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Bongwarrior. ITN absolutely requires consensus at ITN/C, where this story is already under discussion. This is not an optional step which can be ignored if an individual admin feels like it. If you were concerned about a few hours delay (which is normal for ITN), you could have nominated it this morning. Besides, there's no guarantee it will be supported. Modest Genius talk 23:10, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? But this was nominated hours before you posted it and there clearly was and is consensus against posting it. There's being bold and there's being rogue. -- tariqabjotu 00:01, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We ran an ITN item about the resignation when the announcement was made. As Tariqabjotu noted, there is clear consensus against running such an item again. Did you even check WP:ITN/C before posting it? —David Levy 03:04, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you've resumed editing. I await your response. —David Levy 15:35, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. How about posting some news on ITN that's less than four days old? Seems to me the procedure is a problem: by putting everything up to an often interminable discussion, we are lowering the quality and timeliness of the Main Page. I stand by my earlier BOLD. ProhibitOnions (T) 16:10, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't answer my question (regarding whether you checked WP:ITN/C). Regardless, your response is rather disheartening. You ignored consensus (at best) or unilaterally overruled it (at worst). You did so by editing a fully protected page, which was an abuse of the trust placed in you by the community. As Tariqabjotu noted, this was a rogue action, not a "bold" one.
If you find fault with ITN's procedures, you're welcome to propose that they be changed. You aren't welcome to deem the community wrong and post a rejected ITN item because you feel like it.
I couldn't remember why I had your talk page watchlisted, so I checked the archives. It turns out that I contacted you in 2006 regarding an inappropriate ITN item that you took it upon yourself to post ("What rules?"). More than six years later, it seems that you still regard this as an administrative entitlement.
No one has requested an apology, but I'd hoped for an assurance that this won't happen again (if only because you recognize the community's disapproval, your opinion thereof notwithstanding). Instead, you say that you "stand by" your action, which leads me to believe that you might repeat it in the future. Is my understanding accurate? —David Levy 20:57, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Western Electric on SS Easton

appears to have been added in error some time ago. Requires correction.69.156.48.176 (talk) 17:05, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not a mistake. Read the article - it was a disaster for the company. Regards, - ProhibitOnions (T) 20:13, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm humbled! Was focused on the wartime aspect and skimmed the details of the disaster. Shaping up as a good acticle, needs a nomination. Cheers! 69.156.48.176 (talk) 20:38, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No need to be humbled - the article needs to bring out this aspect more (the disaster was for Western Electric a bit like, say, 9/11 was for Cantor Fitzgerald). At the moment, as you point out, there are only a couple of easily missed sentences in an otherwise very good article. That ought to be improved, and the article should indeed be nominated. -ProhibitOnions (T) 02:26, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Newcastle

[edit]

Please do not move Newcastle railway station to Newcastle Central Station again. It has been attempted before, several times, and was reverted each time. There has been no discussion on the matter since 2011, so any move must be preceded by a fresh WP:RM discussion which concludes with consensus to move. Please see also WP:NCUKSTATIONS. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:01, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Precisely my point. There has been no discussion on this in essentially seven years, and there's no need to adhere to a truce from way back when there were several difficult users insisting on various homebrew names for the station. The discussion shows the name "Newcastle Central Station" is well attributed. -ProhibitOnions (T) 16:49, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is four years, not seven, since the last discussion. It is immaterial that the discussions took place some time ago: the fact that there has been discussion indicates that a page move is controversial, and per WP:MOVE#Before moving a page, WP:RM#CM should be followed. "Newcastle railway station" is no more a "homebrew name" than "Newcastle Central Station" is. The reason for not naming the article "Newcastle Central Station" is that it goes against WP:NCUKSTATIONS. The relevant rows of the table are:
Rail service Name Example
"mainline" rail (National Rail) x railway station Swindon railway station
Tyne and Wear Metro x Metro station Pelaw Metro station
Any two or more of the above x station London Bridge station
The article covers the main line station only, the T&W Metro station being covered elsewhere, so the "Any two or more of the above" row does not apply and the applicable row is that beginning '"mainline" rail (National Rail)'. The "x" we replace with the verifiable official name of the station, which as given on its signage and on websites such as National Rail Enquiries, is "Newcastle". Therefore the article should be named Newcastle railway station, which is where it presently is. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:37, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, ProhibitOnions. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi ProhibitOnions.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Skiathos Island National Airport, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Flyover. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Original titles

[edit]

Please stop removing the original titles en masse. I will now revert everything back. Btw your edit summaries seem a bit opinionated: [1]. [2]. (And no, it's not "merely written that way on the cover", it is written this way officially, you can check on Oricon etc.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:36, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here: [3]. As you can see, different albums are capitalized differently. Could you please not remove the official titles? --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:45, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And here: [4]. Just look: "love the world", "VOICE", "Spring of Life". I have no idea what their reasons are, but they chose to write the titles this way and they are consistently written this way in Japanese reliable sources. --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:58, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't removed any original titles. But simply because something is written in capital letters on an album cover or in a logo doesn't mean it's always written that way. To describe something as "stylized" that way is to misunderstand what that means. Furthermore, Wikipedia does not use non-standard capitalization. See the following:
MOS:ALLCAPS: "Wikipedia avoids unnecessary capitalization. In English, capitalization is primarily needed for proper names, acronyms, or for the first word of a sentence."
MOS:ALLCAPS: "Avoid writing with all capitals, including small caps, when they have only a stylistic function. Reduce them to one of the other title cases or normal case, as appropriate."
MOS:TM: "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization practices, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official", as long as this is a style already in widespread use, rather than inventing a new one."
-ProhibitOnions (T) 03:30, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They are original titles. They are always written like this (in Japanese), not just on the covers. --Moscow Connection (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Try to find even one example where it is spelled differently (in Japanese): [5]. The Japanese media are very serious about things like this. It is the official title.
And I'm not saying anything about writing it like this in the prose part. I'm just saying that the original titles must be mentioned in the article.
What word would you suggest to use instead of "stylized"? "Written"? --Moscow Connection (talk) 22:02, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

JT Foxx feedback on editing

[edit]

Hi, I am newer to Wikipedia, and have noticed the few edits i have made on what seems to be a small page, get edited and then edits were blocked for vandalism. I am not even sure if I am connecting to you directly the correct way. I wanted to get some feedback to see what the issues have been with my edits, and what I did that was qualified as vandalism as I am not sure I want to keep attempting to contribute to articles. So I am reaching out to see if you can give me some guidance and direction. Thank you! GlitterGirl83 (talk) 23:31, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We're trying to write an encyclopedia here, not a promotional blurb. Articles about living people need to follow rules like WP:BLP, but they're not written to make public figures look good (or bad). The aim is to provide as much reliable information as possible. Seeing half a dozen users repeatedly remove Mr. Foxx's original last name, just because he himself doesn't like it to be known, is WP:Vandalism. It's also strongly discouraged, but not forbidden, for people or their close associates or family members to edit their own articles, but if they do, they need to adhere to the same old policies. The JT Foxx article is currently semi-protected to discourage drive-by deletions, but experienced registered editors can still work on it. Have a look at the welcome message I've left on your talk page. Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 15:19, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#JT_Foxx I pretty much suggested deletion, but ....

Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:28, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article JT Foxx has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Severely lacking in reputable secondary sources. The article seems to be overtly promotional.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 21:43, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to propose JT Foxx for deletion, but I got a message saying it was protected. Would you mind starting the deletion request yourself? Thanks! World's Lamest Critic (talk) 21:46, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The article is a stub - wouldn't it be better to work on it? But if you wish, I've removed the protection. - ProhibitOnions (T) 05:25, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing BLP

[edit]

Hi ProhibitOnions,

You may wish to review some of your edits to JT Foxx to understand why they were inappropriate and violated the Biographies of Living Persons policy, among others, so that you won't make those same mistakes in the future.

  • This edit inappropriately uses a legal document as a primary source in a biography, which is expressly and strictly prohibited by policy: Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person. Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses. The use of primary sources in BLPs is limited only to where it can augment something discussed in a reliable secondary source.
  • This edit inappropriately uses social media posts such as Instagram, Meetup and a claimed high school alumni listing for sourcing; none of these are acceptable reliable secondary sources for statements about a living person. You even got real close to realizing this when you wrote in the edit summary, better refs needed, but you should have realized that if you can't find those "better refs" for a piece of information, it can't be included in the encyclopedia at all.

I hope this helps you grasp the (admittedly complex) rules of sourcing for biographies, and I hope you understand the reason these policies are so strict: to ensure that Wikipedia articles treat living people in a fair-minded manner, eschewing tabloid sensationalism and gossip in favor of the standards of neutrality, fairness and balance found in high-quality reliable sources. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 03:48, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mea culpa - I'd sat down to try to find some sources for some of these things when I got whisked away on account of a family medical emergency. I shouldn't have saved what I had done - those links were just the starting point for my own research (e.g. Foxx mentioned going to Loyola High School in one of his speeches - I'd just have to listen to enough of it to find it).
Given all the surprising assertions (Steve Wozniak called him the closest thing to Steve Jobs he'd ever met - really?), you might expect there'd be plenty of info about this individual out there. Just being a radio talk show host in several major markets should be enough by itself to establish notability and provide plenty of details - but lo and behold, almost all mentions of the show are from Foxx's own websites (giving the impression of a short-lived infomercial, not a syndicated program). Regards - ProhibitOnions (T) 20:17, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I understand where you're coming from and it would seem like there would be a lot more out there about this guy because his whole schtick seems dubious at best, but... I guess no other reliable source besides the one DW reporter has really taken a look at what's going on here, and until then... we'll just have to wait for the reliable sources to hopefully lead the way. I appreciate your thoughtful response. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 04:50, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ProhibitOnions Question for u

[edit]

Hi ProhibitOnions, Is your username an indication you dislike onions as a matter of culinary or dietary preference, or if there is another meaning (or none at all)? Thanks from a lover of the soulful sound of a happy hound. Houndsong1 Houndsong1 (talk) 00:04, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's because I don't like onions at all. Quite often restaurants (or wherever) will add them to dishes that don't need them and ruin something that would otherwise be great. And somehow this sense of disappointment was what inspired me when I was trying to come up with a username. -ProhibitOnions (T) 05:10, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit surprised that you added the tag with no explanation. Template:POV is specific about this, saying ". Funnybot

[edit]

Hi. I reverted your your edit to Funnybot, because the first passage you added was not supported by a citation of a reliable, secondary source, and the citation you included with the second passage, was both a primary source and a dead link. With regard to material about the content of narrative works that is evaluative, analytical or interpretive, the source must be a secondary source, and it must explicitly mention the information in relation to the work in question. Using a written or filmed work as a primary sources to form conclusions not explicitly in that work is synthesis, which is a form of original research. Nightscream (talk) 14:02, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not a dead link - might not be available from your area for copyright reasons. Also, no synthesis. The dialog in German is not dubbed. That's all. -ProhibitOnions (T)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

A trout for improperly redirecting an article [6] without even notifying the creator, only to see it had to be created a few days later at Davenport apartment collapse. Please follow our proper WP:AFD or WP:PROD policies in the future. - Fuzheado | Talk 10:49, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
