Name of the group
[edit]Hi all, I have just made a few changes to indicate that the name of the group contains the word "Group". This may not have been the case historically but now all points to this:
- the website of the group calls it "European Conservatives and Reformists Group" and, in the text, uses the acronym "ECR Group";
- the website uses the address "ecrgroup.eu";
- the logo includes the word "group"; and
- the website of the European Parliament refers to it as "European Conservatives and Reformists Group".
Based on this, I think it is clear what the actual name and acronym are.
However, before moving the page from "European Conservatives and Reformists" to "European Conservatives and Reformists Group", I wanted to discuss it here. I know that, in the infobox, we have the "formal name" field, but I think this should now be removed, as the group itself uses the long version of the name.
In practice, both the group and the party sometimes use "ECR" to refer to themselves, but there does not seem to be a reason to "European Conservatives and Reformists" for the group rather than for the party on Wikipedia.
Any ideas on this? Julius Schwarz (talk) 07:35, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz: I would support the move, but I’d go easy with the abbreviation “ECR Group”. Some editors seem to really like specifying “Party” or “Group” when they both have the same abbreviation, even when it’s clear which one it refers to. I think we should do what most news articles do, and only specify when ECR/ALDE/EPP could mean either one. There’s no reason to write “ECR Party” in this table or “ALDE Party” in this one. The column is called “European party”, of course they are parties. So can we please not write “ECR Group” in places like this. The section is called “Groups formed”, of course they are groups. - I'm fine with that and I have no intention of changing the acronym anywhere else. But I think the main page itself should reflect the nomenclature that the group itself chooses and is officially used. Julius Schwarz (talk) 15:04, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Julius Schwarz: As I said, I support the move. "European Conservatives and Reformists" refers to the party just as much as to the group. That may not have always been the case, but it is now. When they want to specify one, they write “European Conservatives and Reformists Party” or “European Conservatives and Reformists Group”. The title of this article is exactly the kind of place where we need to specify. I would, however, change the leads to “The European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR Group or simply ECR)” and “The European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR Party or simply ECR)” to make it clear that both are often referred to as simply “ECR”. I would also replace “ECR Party” with “ECR” in the table below, and “ALDE Party” with “ALDE” in the one at Renew Europe. Brainiac242 (talk) 19:02, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Made a few changes and requested the move (couldn't do it outright because the destination page already exists; it redirects to the current page). Julius Schwarz (talk) 20:42, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Done. Final thing is to change the "ECR -> ECR Group" redirect to a disambiguation page. Will do that soon. Julius Schwarz (talk) 05:16, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
