Questions
[edit]What about funding? How is EC involved? --Konkreteswissen (talk) 11:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Edit summary:
[edit]- Removed a few sentence/paragraphs that were non-informative pure P.R.; much of the rest still reads highly POV, but it is still generally informative and hopefully somewhat encyclopedic.
European Cooperation in Science and Technology | COST
[edit]- Wikilink to "COST" piped "European Cooperation in Science and Technology" for hover description (simulating <acronym>).
"Σ!" → "E!"
[edit]- Standardized all abbreviations (some were "Σ!") to "E!" ("Σ!" looks cool and matches their logo, but they use "E! " for Project #s) www.eurekanetwork.org
"Hierarchy"???
[edit]- Changed the sub-section heading under section Structure from Organs to Hierarchy (Chair, MC, IPC, …); still don't think it's precisely the right word but that's the best that came up and Organs definitely doesn't fit!
- Also, {{ Clarify }} added to:
- Chair says "… represents EUREKA externally and agrees with the ESE (Secretariat) on the level of support it should provide, which is then incorporated into the ESE’s business plan." — Does the Chair simply support whatever the ESE proposes? Are the Chair and ESE jointly responsible for the approval? Are one/both merely a rubber-stamp formality approving whatever the HLG/HLRs approve? Are they argreeing on the level of support Σ! should provide to individual projects? Or on some other "level of support it should provide"? And if so, to whom?
- HLRs — Do they democratically vote (i.e. each with an equal 1/40th vote), or is there a more complicated process involved?
- NIPs — Above it says 2009 - Bosnia and Herzegovina join as NIPs; how does that relate to the definition of NIPs? How does being a NIP compare to being a full member?
- The NIPs (which resembles the derogatory name which was used during WWII for Japanese and should probably be changed), indicate that some projects have been put forward and/or are ongoing; has the Associated Country (South-Korea) put forward and projects and/or received any funding?
Rephrase
[edit]- With the exception of a few copyedit changes, much of the text is still a cut & paste of the EUREKA site; as the already existing tag in references says, more independent/third party references needed; and much of the text should be rephrased.
"### millions" and "#.#bn" (billions)
[edit]- Started by changing all € figures to millions to avoid confusion with sequential lines of numbers like "730 million" … "93 million" … "3.8 billion" … "6.1 million" where the 3.8 billion can get lost in the comparison; but then came across some situations where some of the numbers already in the article were sums of other numbers also listed and the case where "5,300 million" was listed as the sum for listed figures of "745 million + 730 million + 3,800 million" = "5,275 million"; rather than picking what to arbitrarily edit, changed to "5.3bn" (which is sufficiently accurate as a rounded number); switched all large numbers > 1,000 million to billions (i.e. short scale), using the form "#.#bn" as per WP:Numbers#Large Numbers. Hopefully "730 million" … "93 million" … "3.8bn" … "6.1 million" is now less likely to be misread, even if it's no more precise.
"Euro" → "euros"
[edit]- For Euro versus euros the non-English translation over to English would appear to be singular ("Euro") and in this case capitalized; however, standard RS translation (New York Times & BBC) is plural, lower case ("euros") (as with "dollars").
- Best option might be all amounts as "€###M" or "€#.#bn"; consensus? – Bold it! — Who R you? Talk 08:02, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Proposed changes for updating outdated information
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hello editors. I am employed by the Eureka Association, and would appreciate updates being made to the Wikipedia page to ensure information is accurate. Currently, a lot is outdated. Contact me if you have any queries about these.
Information to be changed: EUREKA to Eureka.
Explanation of issue: Organisation is no longer using EUREKA capitalised, but Eureka.
References supporting change: https://eurekanetwork.org/
Information to be removed: "(from the ancient Greek way to write "E" and unrelated to modern "Sigma")"
Explanation of issue: This seems irrelevant and provides no information about the organisation.
Information to be changed: "Eureka, sometimes abbreviated as E! or Σ is an intergovernmental organisation for research and development funding and cooperation. Eureka is an open platform for international collaboration in innovation. Organisations and companies applying through Eureka programmes can access funding and support from national and regional ministries or agencies for their international R&D projects."
Explanation of issue: "Pan-European" is outdated - the network is international/ global. Slight rephrasing for clarity. Explanation of functioning/ purpose of Eureka added in extra sentence. Please rephrase based on your interpretation of the website if you feel this final sentence is too "promotional".
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/countries/belgium-wallonia/index https://www.eurekanetwork.org/about-us/eureka-history http://www.mitterrand.org/Francois-Mitterrand-et-l.html
Information to be changed: "Eureka is not an European Union research programme, but rather an intergovernmental organisation of national ministries or agencies, of which the EU is a member."
Explanation of issue: Small additions for clarification in this sentence.
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/about-us/nfbs/
Information to be removed: "EUREKA is loosely affiliated with COST, its non-competitive research counterpart, although the two focus on different aspects of R&D with COST's efforts geared towards more socially focused areas of public interest while EUREKA's mandate is to provide funding for projects envisaged, developed, and executed by private industry."
Explanation of issue: There is no real affiliation with COST. Information seems irrelevant as a comparison (especially in the history section of the page). Moreover, Eureka supports projects executed by all organisation types, so the emphasis on private industry vs. COST's "socially focused areas of public interest" isn't correct.
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/why-eureka/ https://issuu.com/eurekaassociation/docs/annual_report_2019
Information to be added: 2020-2021 Austria (flag) in the Chairs table.
Explanation of issue: Austria took over the Eureka Chair in July 2020.
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/about-us/chairmanship https://issuu.com/eurekaassociation/docs/annual_report_2019
Information to be changed: New logo https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eureka_Logo_Baseline_Vertical_Color_RGB_Medium.png?markasread=24417006&markasreadwiki=commonswiki
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/footer/our-organisation/brand-guidelines
Information to be changed: Motto: "Innovation across borders" has changed to "Innovation beyond borders"
References supporting change: Logo. https://issuu.com/eurekaassociation/docs/annual_report_2019
Information to be changed: "Members 41 Members, 1 Partner Country, 3 Associated Members" to "Members 41 members, 1 partner country, 4 associated members"
Explanation of issue: Contradicts what is in the main text of the page (which is correct). Removal of initial caps.
References supporting change: https://issuu.com/eurekaassociation/docs/annual_report_2019
Information to be changed: "Odilia Knap" to "Ulrich Schuh"
Explanation of issue: Chair handover was in July 2020.
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/about-us/chairmanship
Information to be removed: "Philippe Vanrie (Head of the Eureka Secretariat)"
Explanation of issue: Philippe Vanrie is no longer working for Eureka. Ulrich Schuh is acting Head in the interim. This doesn't need to be specified.
Information to be added: Heading "Eureka programmes" and subheadings of "Eurostars", "Clusters", "Network projects", "Globalstars" and "InvestHorizon". "Umbrellas (past)" should come under this too.
Explanation of issue: If there is mention of the Clusters programme, there should be mention of other Eureka programmes too. Short descriptions of the programmes could be added. I would suggest the following, but all approved information exists in the annual report:
- Eurostars: Eurostars is Eureka's flagship SME funding programme that supports R&D-performing SMEs (alongside other types of organisations) leading international project consortia. It is co-funded by 36 participating Eureka national funding bodies and the European Union Horizon 2020 framework programme. Since 2014, the Eurostars programme has mobilised over 1.75 billion euro.
- Clusters: Clusters are long-term, strategic industrial initiatives. Cluster projects usually have a large number of participants and aim to develop inclusive technologies of key importance, mainly in ICT, energy and more recently in the biotechnology and automation sectors. Eureka Clusters are known to have had a particular impact on the ability of the European microelectronics sector to compete with other continents.
- Network projects: Network projects is a flexible funding programme for all organisations collaborating on international R&D projects. It is open for applications all year, but there are also country-specific calls for projects launched frequently. These are sometimes thematic and can be for bilateral or multilateral collaborations.
- Globalstars: Globalstars follows the same programme model as Network projects. Calls for projects are launched between Eureka countries and one non-Eureka country. In recent years, national funding ministries/ agencies from e.g. Brazil, India, Japan and Singapore have collaborated with Eureka using this programme.
- InvestHorizon: InvestHorizon is the only Eureka programme that doesn't offer funding, but rather trainings, workshops and international events. It is a European Union-funded joint investment readiness programme in collaboration with Eureka that supports deep tech SMEs seeking Series A investment.

Information to be changed: "Umbrellas (past)". Use of past tense in description.
Explanation of issue: Umbrellas no longer exist as Eureka programmes.
References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/countries/belgium-wallonia/index https://issuu.com/eurekaassociation/docs/annual_report_2019
Information to be changed: "Selected projects" to "Notable projects"
Explanation of issue: Selected projects seems unclear to me. Selected for what?

- @Katie.shaweureka: Done. I made most of the changes you described above, with some modifications. Some of those changes would have been fine for you to make yourself. An editor with a conflict of interest can make corrections (spelling, grammar, names, dates), revert obvious vandalism, and add citations to reliable secondary sources. Substantive changes to content, or changes in tone, must be proposed on the talk page, as you have done. Because the list of additional sources you included above were not associated with any particular bit of the article, I did not add those; you may add them in where appropriate. ~Anachronist (talk) 16:28, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

Information to be added: Subheading "Innowwide". Explanation of issue: Innowwide is a new Eureka programme within the European Partnership on Innovative SMEs. I would suggest the following text, but all information exists in the 2022 annual report: "Innowwide is funded by the European Union as part of the European Partnership on Innovative SMEs. Innowwide provides grants of 60,000 euro to assess the viability of innovative SMEs' research or commercial ambitions in international markets." Information to be added: Subheading "Innowwide". Explanation of issue: Innowwide is a new Eureka programme within the European Partnership on Innovative SMEs. I would suggest the following text, but all information exists in the 2022 annual report: "Innowwide is funded by the European Union Horizon Europe frame work programme. Innowwide provides grants of 60,000 euro for innovative SMEs to assess the viability of their research or commercial ambitions in international markets." Information to be changed: Under subheading "Eurostars": "Eurostars is Eureka's flagship SME funding programme that supports innovative SMEs (alongside other types of organisations) leading international project consortia. It is co-funded by 37 participating Eureka national funding bodies and the European Union Horizon Europe framework programme." Explanation for change: A new European Union framework programme has begun that the programme now falls within. Singapore is the 37th country, having signed an agreement in 2022. Information to be changed: Subheading "InvestHorizon" to "investment readiness". Description to: "The investment readiness programme is the only Eureka programme that doesn't offer funding, but rather online sessions with corporate partners and participation in international events." Reasons for change: InvestHorizon no longer exists as a programme. References supporting change: https://www.eurekanetwork.org/about-us/Annual%20report%202022.pdf
Information to be removed: Under subheading "Clusters": Description to: "The investment readiness programme is the only Eureka programme that doesn't offer funding, but rather online sessions with corporate partners and participation in international events. It is co-funded by the European Union Horizon Europe framework programme and aimed towards supporting startups and SMEs." Reasons for change: InvestHorizon no longer exists as a programme.
