Better title?
[edit]I'm thinking that this page would be better at Ethiopian horses. It's about more than one breed of horse, and we stopped calling that country "Abyssinia" a long time ago. Unless anyone objects, I'll probably move it in a day or two. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:52, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- I have supportive feelings about the sentiment, but I'd like to be sure we address the sourcing issues. The "Abyssinian horse" title came from someone's breed book. Can you access Hendricks or is it only available within the US? If it's out there, we need to figure out how to handle it. It's kind of like all the breeds of Indonesian ponies, that I kind of wish we could merge into one good article instead of a zillion stubs. Montanabw(talk) 01:10, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- OK, Justlettersandnumbers so here's what I've got: Almost Jack Squat. :-) A few American sources claim there is a specific "Abyssinian" breed: (Hendricks, apparently in the index only, about a paragraph from Okie State, which cites this and itself) The problem that I see is that a) There is no breed society for this alleged breed in the USA or the UK, so I have no clue where they got their info, and b) the info that exists is either sparse notations in indexes or else is simply terrible (a claim of being 13.5 hands? There is no such thing as 13.5 hands!). So, I'd say move it if you want, but given that the "Abyssinian" title is out there and we don't want to have a separate article recreated, I'd suggest you or I add a sentence or two, citing to Okie state, that says that this group of breeds collectively is also sometimes referred to as "Abyssinian." That's mildly WP:SYNTH, but it's pretty clear that's what is going on. Plus be sure this title is a redirect to avoid someone else recreating it from the list at the Equinest or something.. :-P Good luck. Montanabw(talk) 18:17, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- I really don't think this is hard. "Abyssinian horse" is any horse found or seen in Abyssinia, just as "Corsican horse" any one found or seen in Corsica, "Burmese horse" ditto in Burma, "Shan horse" ditto in the Shan States or among the Shan people, "Mongolian horse" ditto from Mongolia etc. None of those is a breed, though some may have later become one. I think the thing about them being formerly known as Abyssinian horses is already pretty much covered by "Horses from Ethiopia, formerly known as Abyssinia, were in the past described as a single type, the "Abyssinian Horse" or "Ethiopian Horse", of variable size, colour and conformation." I suppose I could add a citation to the old Mason to that. The new edition treats at least three Ethiopian breeds (Abyssinian, Dongola, Oromo) separately, but I can't see any of the relevant pages, so can't really make any use of it.

- I intentionally didn't make 8 stubs here based on a single source, specifically for breeds that aren't reported as such to DAD-IS. But the Indonesian breeds have many supporting sources for each, and are surely better documented than many minor American "breeds"; sooner or later I'll get to those … I still have the pages you sent me. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:08, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- Looks good, though I'm wondering if the title should either be singular (Ethiopian horse) or expanded (Ethiopian horse breeds) or (Horses of Ethiopia). Not a real big deal, just is odd-looking as a plural. Look forward to the Indonesian project; not sure if some of those should be merged into one comprehensive article like this one or not, I suppose it will depend on where the source material takes us. Requested move 13 October 2023
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus (non-admin closure). No prejudice against a new discussion with List of Ethiopian horse breeds as the proposed title. Jenks24 (talk) 09:42, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Ethiopian horses → Horses in Ethiopia – As per WP:CONSISTENT with other pages, i.e., Horses in Botswana, Horses in Cameroon, Horses in Cuba, Horses in Greece, Horses in Iran, Horses in Jamaica, Horses in Kyrgyzstan, Horses in Russia, Horses in Saudi Arabia, Horses in Slovenia, Horses in Sudan, and Horses in Togo, Horses in the United States. My last move was reverted because "this page is about Ethiopian horses (the breeds or types), nothing like the Horses in Botswana page
" but all of these pages are about that (see Horses in Botswana#Breeding). Breeds or types plus history, use, and culture are part (or missing part) of all of these pages. Take a moment to compare this page to Horses in Sudan or Horses in Cameroon, and then make your decision. FuzzyMagma (talk) 10:12, 13 October 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. - Oppose (it was I who reverted the first of the two previous undiscussed moves and requested reversion of the second at WP:RM). Please see the discussion from 2016/2017 above. Unlike the various Horses in ... articles, this page is specifically about the breeds or types of Ethiopian horse. Such a page would normally be at List of Ethiopian horse breeds (consistent with this, this, this, this, this, this and many others), but – unusually – only some of the breeds or types listed are widely reported as breeds in fundamental sources such as DAD-IS or the sixth edition of Mason's World Encyclopedia of Livestock Breeds and Breeding. Plural titles are commonly used for articles of this sort, such as Northern European short-tailed sheep, Basque breeds and cultivars and the like. The page title was chosen with care, I suggest leaving it alone. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:24, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- There is a section called “use” in this article which is not consistent with any of the lists that you just mentioned. I am not sure why are you trying to limit the article into a list when there is a venue to add about horse naming culture in Ethiopia FuzzyMagma (talk) 20:35, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Comment Justlettersandnumbers is correct that this page's content doesn't match the various Horses in X articles. But the current title is vague, and sounds awkward to me. I don't follow the argument against re-titling to List of Ethiopian horse breeds or the like. Walt Yoder (talk) 21:07, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
