Arbcase template
[edit]I'm re-adding the Template:Arab-Israeli Arbitration Enforcement. The wording at the ArbCase is "All articles related to the Arab-Israeli conflict, defined as: any article that could be reasonably construed as being related to the Arab-Israeli conflict falls under 1RR. When in doubt, assume it is related." If you consider the following facts: 1. Eritrea is part of the Arab world 2. ELF and EPLF were closely linked to PLO and other Palestinian movements. 3. Israel supported the Ethiopian state militarily for decades, seeking to subdue the possibility of another Arab state being established at the Red Sea. Consider the following
Israel's interest in Ethiopia, like that of the United States, revolved around Eritrea. Israeli defense analysts feared that an independent Eri- trean state would adopt a pro- Arab, anti-Israel foreign policy orientation. Arab pressures applied against the Ethiopian empire were seen as part of Israel's own battle with Egypt and Islam, and Eritrea was a part of this confrontation.64 Thus, Tel Aviv viewed the Eritrean civil war as a southerly extension of the Arab-Israeli conflict — a perception reinforced by allegations that surfaced after the June 1967 war of a PLO-ELF link.
Source, http://books.google.com/books?id=r8rbBfTM0AgC&pg=PA162 I'd say that it puts the article well within the boundaries of ARPBIA. --Soman (talk) 19:16, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Your assertion that "Eritrea is part of the Arab world" is completely questionable. Even if we were to grant that it is nation of Arabs (I understand that Arabic has some official status, but it is no more an Arab nation than is Ethiopia) at any rate, this article is "ETHIOPIA-Israel relations". If you follow this kind of "slippery slope argument" that "Eritrean organizations have links with the Palestinians, therefore they are covered" then we could have individual editors extending the arb case to half of the articles in the whole wiki based on their own personal judgement calls. Are you an arbitrator? Not as far as I can tell. You are applying your own judgement call, repeatedly, and against consensus or any explicit arbitration that articles about Ethiopian foreign affairs fall under the "Palestine-Israeli articles" purview. Due process and consideration would call for one to at least get a clarification before proceeding in such a reckless manner. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 20:10, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- The key words in the case are "reasonably construed". I don't find your construction at all reasonable, so further clarification may be needed. Right under that the decision says the template may be used at articles about the Arab Israeli conflict. That is not the subject of this article and is only tangential to the subject of this article. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 20:20, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Eritrea was under Ethiopian control for the major part of second half of the 20th century. For the most part of modern-day diplomacy between Israel and Ethiopia, the Eritrean issue dominated Israeli-Ethiopian relations (see the blockquote above). Eritrea is today an observer in the Arab League, but during the Cold War years (which is the period we are talking about) the dominant tendency in Arab discourse was to emphasize the Arab character of Eritrea. The Eritreans on their side were supported by various Arab governments, the Eritrean war was intertwined with the Cold War and the Arab-Israeli conflict. We are obviously having an edit dispute over this article, in regards to details relating the the Arab-Israeli conflict. Thus ARBPIA should apply. --Soman (talk) 22:20, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, but practically everything is "intertwined" sooner or later, which is why I brought up the "slippery slope". I just feel we shouldn't be the ones to make aggressive expansions of the purview of the arb case, without specific guidance of where to draw the line. The article Arab world even clarifies that Eritrea is not in most recognized definitions of the term. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 22:40, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
