Bates
[edit]Bates was an important figure in 19th and 20th century American popular scholarship. He wrote The Bible Considered as Living Literature as well as a number of other more or less important volumes. He was literary editor of the Dictionary of American Biography. He was professor of English at the University of Arizona.
