Picture

Someone out there, let's get a good picture of Eric to go into the info box! --Kwan-Trill 17:34, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Phenomenal guitarist"

What's this?

"Eric Johnson is a phenomenal guitarist, musician, and person." 72.192.135.223 01:14, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

"Guitar hero"

"By the time Johnson released his Capitol Records debut Ah Via Musicom in 1990, he was a bona fide "guitar hero,"

Please god, don't mention Eric Johnson and Guitar Hero in the same sentence, and the pun sucked too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.244.113.5 (talk) 20:29, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Bill Hicks?

Not quite sure what the reference to Bill Hicks brings. Bill Hicks wasn't a notable guitarist or guitar expert and I just don't understand why it matters what Bill Hicks thought of Eric Johnson's playing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tpoore1 (talkcontribs) 12:10, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Avenue

When I first saw Eric Johnson on "Austin City Limits" (I believe it was early 1980s), his band was called "The Avenue", I think. But there is no mention of it here in the article.

Can anybody elaborate? Or am I mistaken (I've been known to be ... lol).

--Atikokan (talk) 19:57, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

EJ himself confirms this (inasmuch as he does not refute it when asked about it) in this email interview on a site dedicated to him. http://www.ericjohnson.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=42&Itemid=9 Anarchangel (talk) 19:14, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Eric Johnson discography

Support split - Discography section takes up more than one quarter of the page, and should be split to a new article entitled Eric Johnson discography. Thoughts? --Jax 0677 (talk) 15:39, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

'Who is Eric Johnson?' Guitar Player magazine

FYI, I have that 'Who is Eric Johnson?' Guitar Player magazine and I also have the floppy record that came with it. The version of 'Cliffs' is not the same version he played on Austin City Limits btw. Leo Guidolin

Changes

I changed text on two lines describing his early years. I'm sitting next to Eric Johnson's brother, and just learned that they were brothers. We came to wikipedia, and Bill (Eric's brother) disavows ever having started his own band in high school. Also, he (Bill) speaks of his father as someone who had a good voice, but was more enthusiastic about (and better at) whistling than singing. 148.142.66.110 (talk) 14:53, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Someone who does not edit wikipedia.

I am responsible for changing the article; I hope everyone likes it. I wanted to write an article that does Eric justice, consequently, I added pictures and greatly expanded his bio to sound more "encyclopedic" and not "gear-headdy." Discuss and enjoy. --Kwan-Trill 03:08, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Somebody should perhaps incorporate information about Eric Johnson's connection to the prog rock band U.K. - but you'll have to chase down the Guitar Player magazine (circa 1986) which confirms all of this. I used to have it years ago, and it has a big cover article on Johnson. At the time, it was practically all the information you could find on him, and it even contained a soundsheet featuring Eric's classic Austin City Limits performance of "Cliffs Of Dover".

As a quick aside: Remember soundsheets? (also sometimes called soundpages): a little plastic, square-shaped record complete with a little circle by the spindle hole indicating where you're supposed to place a penny to weigh the soundsheet down if it slips on your turntable.

This is the Guitar Player article which generated the above quote about Eric being able to tell what brand of battery is in an FX pedal. As for U.K., I forget the exact details, but I believe that Johnson was actually a member of the band for a while before Allan Holdsworth joined, but no recordings survive.Thistle172 11:00, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

--First, let me say that I am responsible for rewriting the article (except for citations, albums, awards, etc) in its current form.

I am indeed aware that Eric has several vague connections to different bands at different times; Dixie Dregs and U.K. are just a couple that have been mentioned over the years. However, there is no evidence that Eric was a member of either band. In fact, I have read a couple of different sources that say he turned down membership in both. In any event, I don't think it's noteworthy enough for inclusion.

Neither, quite frankly, is Eric's purported bat-like sonic detecting abilities (or lack thereof, if you count his ongoing battle with tinnitus.) It's not that things like this are cool in a quirky, trivial sort of way; it's just that they don't belong in an encyclopedia, in my opinion.

Could the article you are referencing possibly be the '86 Guitar For The Practicing Musician rather than the Guitar Player? I have the former, and if I remember correctly, it has a blurb that says something like "Who is Eric Johnson?" on the cover. I haven't read that for quite a while. I'll have to go dig it out. :) --Kwan-Trill 18:45, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Somebody removed the information about Eric's signature Strat he designed. This is very useful information to an EJ fan. Why did they remove it?

I removed it because as it was written and placed, it didn't flow well with the rest of the article. Just because something appears to be noteworthy to "an EJ fan" doesn't mean it belongs in an encyclopedia. If you want to include information about EJ's guitars, etc., then give it a separate subheading and please--PLEASE--do not make it sound like it was written by a "gearhead." If that happens--Kwan-Trill 20:29, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Somebody removed "Vocal rock" and returned genres to just "Instrumental Rock". This is inaccurate, Eric composes and records not just instrumentals but also vocal rock pieces, e.g. Desert Rose, "Nothing Can Keep me From You", "High Landrons" and "Forty Mile Town" from the "Ah Via Musicom" album.

David or just Eric?

Is really Eric Johnson name David Eric? I never read in web his name start with David, just one source says. Could be some database problem wrong information on the source. Thanks. Vinicius Lima (talk) 18:06, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Move discussion in progress

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Eric Johnson (disambiguation) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 10:30, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Since this doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I'd like to at least recommend moving this page to simply be "Eric Johnson (guitarist)" as the only other musician on that disambiguation page named Eric Johnson is explicitly referred to as "Eric D. Johnson". Keeping the ", born 1954" in the page title is extraneous and over-specific. —Kazinsal(t·c) 10:34, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Reply - @Kazinsal:, if you want this to be moved, I suggest that you file a new move request at WP:RM. --Jax 0677 (talk) 19:12, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Eric Johnson (guitarist, born 1954)Eric Johnson (guitarist) – See also the previous section on this talk page. There is no other article called 'Eric Johnson (guitarist, born XXXX)'. The only other musician called Eric Johnson is Eric D. Johnson, who is explicitly known as Eric D. Johnson, and is not necessarily primarily known as a guitarist, either. Then it makes sense to me name this page simply Eric Johnson (guitarist). Lennart97 (talk) 15:19, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
