Other Eppings

[edit]

Their are other Eppings in the world which are bigger in population then this Epping. Epping, Victoria and Epping, New South Wales for example.

Why does this page get first listing to the word Epping.

Ray-Rays 21:25, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

I agree. The Epping in Australia for example is a much bigger town, yet a Wiki search for "Epping" goes straight to the smaller Epping in Essex. I think a 'may refer to:' page should be created for Epping.Spymo (talk) 16:01, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AsparagusTips (talk) 17:22, 10 May 2017 (UTC) Because it is older and probably the others are named after this one! The plural of Epping should not have an apostrophe, i.e. Other Eppings.[reply]

This article is certainly older (28 September 2002); Epping Victoria (24 April 2004); Epping NSW (6 June 2004). This is probably why this happened this way round. Size does not always indicate current and historical importance. A hatnote for the others could be added at the top of this article, and on the others mentioned here. Michael Jackson

[edit]

I was wondering whether it was worth noting that Michael Jackson shall be staying in Rod Stewarts Epping mansion during his London concerts? – This is a big story in the Epping area, but is it worthy of noting?(78.86.136.146 (talk) 17:50, 12 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Not anymore! --90.206.122.228 (talk) 21:55, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Edits

[edit]

I have undo all but one edit made by 'Pol098', as they contained poor grammar and did not flow. I personally feel that the current text is fine.(94.192.68.43 (talk) 20:32, 15 January 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Ben Murphy - Youngest Mayor in the world?

[edit]

Whoever decided to add this was obviously speculating widly, sans research - Greebowarrior (talk) 13:26, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it is thought locally that he is the youngest Mayor in the UK. However, no one including the Conservative Party has supplied evidence to prove this.(89.167.221.3 (talk) 21:27, 13 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Marks & Spencer Simply Food

[edit]

Before anyone says anything, I know M&S isn't officially open in Epping yet but thought best to add now, as it will be open no later than October 2008. The Epping Forest Guardian confirms that the Epping Simply Food store is the biggest in the district at 12,000sq.ft, the second biggest is in Loughton which is 10,000sq.ft.(Spymo (talk) 15:00, 16 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Deletions

[edit]

I don’t see why so much information had to be deleted; it is far more concise than other towns (e.g. Loughton) and is no way ‘information overload’. Due to this I have re-applied some of the information. Perhaps in further deletions could be discussed first!(Spymo (talk) 18:48, 27 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Spymo, if you are referring to my recent edits - then I think you'll find that with the exception of the repetition of the "twin town", I simply restructured the article rather than deleted the content. I made the decision because I felt the article needed a clearer plan, which if implemented now, would avoid the necessity of a more complex overhaul later. Oneblackline (talk) 10:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For example, the sub-section of the "History" section "Epping today" is not a historical passage, but the information can be re-written into appropriate sections (as per my edits). The information also needs citations. Oneblackline (talk) 10:13, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The following passage belongs in a "Landmarks section"... "Perhaps the most prominent building in Epping these days is the District Council's office with its clock tower, designed to bring balance to the High Street with the old Gothic water tower at the southern end, built in 1872, and St John's Church tower in the centre. The centre of Epping on and around the High Street is a designated conservation area." Oneblackline (talk) 10:17, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection

[edit]

I have 'semi protected' this article as I feel it is being edited by Anonymous users and not for the better. I feel by doing this, it will raise the quality of the article.(Spymo (talk) 19:11, 27 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Think again, that is an WP:administrators function only. Kbthompson (talk) 22:42, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, un-protect it, so anyone can delete the good work that has been done on this page, as has happened! Thought articles were meant to be of a certain quality, guess not!(Spymo (talk) 07:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]
That's my point, it wasn't protected - you only told people it was - and that is a no-no. The general rule is that page protection is only instigated when a page suffers constant vandalism from a number of different sources. Individual acts of vandalism can lead to individual IP addresses being blocked (see WP:AIV).
Good articles develop through consensus between multiple editors. If individuals make edits you don't agree with - that are not vandalism - ask them to discuss it on this page, they may represent a point of view you had not considered. thanks Kbthompson (talk) 08:57, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My apologises for the 'school boy error' on my part. However, I'm no 'little Hitler' I want nothing more than a great article for Epping, being an Epping resident myself, but there have been a number of edits that have 'dumbed down' the article on Epping and I feel that is wrong. As you can see I have asked users to "discuss" edits first and can only hope that this will happen.(Spymo (talk) 10:40, 28 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]
No problem, you may wish to refer to How to write about settlements - personally I don't take it as gospel, but there are many good ideas. Rainham, London is an example of an article on a settlement that has almost made it to GA status. cheers Kbthompson (talk) 11:19, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Property prices

[edit]

I figured putting this on the talk page first might be good rather than just blindly adding. Anyway, I have been looking at property in and around the Harlow/Sawbridgeworth area. We stumbled upon Epping and noted due to the Olympics rental prices have rocketed (£12kpcm where the nominal rent for the area is around £1kpcm) in and around the area. I'm part of WikiProject Essex and was just wondering if this would be worth adding to the page, being the only town outside of London affected by the Olympic Corridor price fixing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.221.38.195 (talk) 19:45, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would oppose that. Wikipedia is not a newspaper or a property guide. A short term rental blip caused by the games is not significant in the thousand year recorded history of the area. Per WP:Recentism stop and consider whether this will still be notable in ten years time.--Charles (talk) 20:28, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Prominent Buildings

[edit]

The Civic centre may be prominent but it is an eyesore and there was much objection to it being built, but was built nonetheless at a huge cost to the town. Can the edit please make this statement to be more neutral than the feel it has now - that someone in the council wrote it. AsparagusTips (talk) 17:26, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Residents

[edit]

Rick Mayall was born in Harlow, which is not in Epping. AsparagusTips (talk) 06:33, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @AsparagusTips: Absolutely right... removed him. Good source in his article states Harlow. The others in the Notables section are suspect unless there are adequate cites to indicate Epping. Any unsourced claims of Epping in their articles is not good enough to avoid removal. Acabashi (talk) 22:27, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
