That said, DALY is not Epidemiology, so this article is misleading.

I think Porsche misunderstood what the DALY values represent. They do not detail the rate of schizophrenia in those countries, but instead are a measure of the disease burden, that is the estimated number of years lost to schizophrenia. Indonesia does not have a high incidence of schizophrenia; however schizophrenia has a greater impact on the quality of life for an Indonesian, than for a European, for instance. Presumably this is because more developed countries are better able to treat their schizophrenics. Therefore, the writing in the article regarding prevalence is completely wrong, and the map is misleading, suggesting that the redder the country is, the higher the incidence of schizophrenia, when this is not the case.

DALY does not encompass Epidemiology

Websters New World Collegiate Dictionary defines Epidemiology, in this context as:

"2. All the elements contributing to the occurence or non-occurence of a disease in a population; ecology of a disease."

DALY therefore, cannot represent the epidemiology of the disease, only one single measure, and not a very applicable one at that, as the measure relates to society, not the disease itself.

I came to this page seeking to understand one aspect of the epidemiology of schizophrenia - its prevalance. I need to know how the disease occurence is distributed across the various nations. This would tell me, for example, the relative correlation between say, capitalism and service-based economies and shizophrenia. DALY tells me nothing of this, it merely tells me how a society is affected by the disease in regards to productivity.

I recommend flagging this article as a stub, as it is missing quite a few elements. Alternatively, the article could be renamed to Disease Burden of Schizophrenia, as that is solely what this article discusses and presents.

Additional research on the epidemiology/diagnosis of schizophrenia in African Americans

Under the heading of race, the article mentions the disproportionate diagnosis of African Americans with schizophrenia. We could have a subheading of 'African Americans' as this is a group particularly affected by (mis)diagnosis of schizophrenia. In this section I would suggest that we could include some recent research on the potential reasons for this healthcare disparity (in the United States) according to scientific studies. For example, this study suggests that depressive symptoms might be being overlooked in blacks diagnosed with schizophrenia. Their conclusion was that overemphasis of psychotic symptoms in African Americans can sometimes lead to multifaceted issues e.g. severe depression manifesting with psychotic symptoms simply being labelled ‘schizophrenia’. The Wikipedia article could also more explicitly comment on the environmental factors (perhaps with the creation of a new heading of termed 'environmental factors') that contribute to bias during the schizophrenia diagnostic interview process in the United States, perhaps leading to disproportionate diagnoses of African Americans. This article notes how institutional racism can lead to discriminatory treatment of African Americans in relation to psychotic disorders. Under the heading of gender, the article mentions men are more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia than females. In this section, it would be eye-opening to mention the added dimension of black women being diagnosed with schizophrenia at higher rates than white women in the United States. This article summarises data from a study entitled 'Exploring racial disparity in posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis: Implications for care of African American women', saying: "Despite having similar violence-related hospitalizations, African American women, for example, are less likely than White women to be diagnosed with PTSD or related conditions (eg, dissociative disorder) and, are more likely to be diagnosed with behavioral and psychotic disorders such as conduct disorder, schizophrenia, or substance abuse/dependence, all of which carry considerable stigma" (p. 305). Daily "schizophrenia ' count

What IS this? Is this total hospitalizations days? If some countries are keeping them in hospitals vs quick discharges as the US commonly does, it says something important OTHER than ' schizophrenia affects some countries more than others" because that is hardly the only measure of the affects or burdens on the overall county in terms of other disability, expenditures or loss of productivity.
