Circumlocution

[edit]
  • "Valerius' temporal proximity to the culture at the time." could be rewritten to be less circumlocutionary and just state what it means in ordinary terms. More stylish too. I'd fix it myself if I were quite sure what was meant. --Wetman (talk) 14:20, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

first formal writing by a woman in Western European Culture

[edit]

What does this mean? She's certainly not the first woman to write: off the absolute ntop of my head, Sappho and Sulpicia come to mind. If the first woman to write non-fiction-y stuff is meant, then this is even harder to understand- there are countless letters from women among the papyri found in Egypt.Furius (talk) 04:29, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Statements consisting only of original research may be removed." God forbid that any intelligent, educated, objective individual be allowed to share observable facts with others. How did this pompous, pseudo-academic policy become part of Wikipedia? And how on earth does WikiP think that discoveries are made? Should all research be secondary? In what universe would that be possible? An appalling and grossly anti-intellectual policy.

@Kawika88: I highly suggest you read the policy again. It exists to ensure that we avoid exactly what you're claiming the policy encourages... Which makes me think you didn't understand what it meant when you saw it, and didn't read the relevant guide page. Verifiability is the backbone of Wikipedia. Without it, the encyclopaedia would become nothing more than a blog of conjecture, and a virtual billboard. Quinto Simmaco (talk) 06:31, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
