Reason for creating article

[edit]

I'm in the process of preparing genus articles in order to facilitate a possible Wikipedia Editathon on New Zealand species. I'm still very much a novice at this but am attempting to be bold. Any assistance in improving my edits would be gratefully received.Ambrosia10 (talk) 23:58, 19 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is the insect endemic to New Zealand? If so, that's worth mentioning when creating these stubs. Schwede66 04:23, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm by no means an expert and am learning as I go. If I can confirm and can appropriately cite an authority for the statement that all the species in the genus are endemic to New Zealand I will definitely mention it. Thanks for your suggestion. Caption on image

[edit]

This image is licensed under the creative commons CC BY 4.0. I've included the caption on the image following the advice of the Creative Commons organisation given here which outlines the ideal attribution. I'm doing this for two reasons. First is to obey the license. But more importantly from my and Wikicommon's point of view I'm using that attribution to attempt to encourage more institutions in New Zealand to license their work under this license.

Most cultural heritage organisations in New Zealand license their scientific images much more restrictively therefore ensuring I'm unable to load those images into Wikicommons. I'm hoping if I caption the image ideally it will ensure that the Auckland Museum will get more traffic to its website from people interested in engaging in its collection. This in turn will hopefully ensure that that the Auckland Museum will be encouraged to share more of its images. Efforts like this can have a significant flow on effect in the cultural sector of a small country such as New Zealand. I'm hoping that in this small way I can play a part in convincing other museums and research institutions in my country to use the same creative commons license enabling better access to and reuse of specimen images. I totally agree with the importance of highlighting how Auckland Museum is releasing images under a less-restrictive license. Some suggestions for taxobox captioning (and feel free to revert or tweak my edit):
  • If a genus taxobox, a wikilink to the species depicted (even if it's a red link)
  • The word "specimen" is the external link to that specimen on Auckland Museum's page
  • Wikilink to explain "holotype" if used
  • An wikilink rather than external link to "Auckland Museum"; that functions better as an explainer, and the Museum's website is listed on their Wikipedia page anyway. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 19:00, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that Giantflightlessbirds. I appreciate the feedback and will make edits as you suggest. Cheers.Ambrosia10 (talk) 01:27, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
