Nomascus hainanus
[edit]I am aware of Michael Geissman's suggestion that Nomascus nasutus be considered conspecific with N. hainanus. Because Groves vide Wilson & Reeder (2005) questioned the inclusion of N. nasutus in N. concolor, I agree with Geissman that the Eastern Black-Crested Gibbons comprise two separate subspecies (N. hainanus hainanus [Hainan Gibbon], and N. h. nasutus [Cao Vit Gibbon]). The two subspecies are told apart by only their vocal sounds.
Was the decline in Cao Vit Gibbon numbers caused by the Vietnam War other than habitat destruction? What were the historical ranges of N. hainanus hainanus and N. h. nasutus?

Comments on expanding article
[edit]The Eastern Black Crested Gibbon article is a stub meaning that it only contains a few short paragraphs in the lead about the animal and then a list of the references used for the limited information. This article could use sections such as evolutionary history, evolutionary history, anatomy and physiology, behavior, ecology, and conservation as well as cultural references. While the article does contain a picture of the map showing where Eastern black crested gibbon lives, it contains little information on the climate. Pictures should also be added to the article to give the reader an idea of what both the species and its habitat looks like. The conservation section would be especially interesting as the species’ status is critically endangered and it is listed in the lead as one of “The World’s24 Most Endangered Primates.” Since no behavior section exists, this could be added by our group. Despite its high importance status, there is little discussion in the talk section about how to improve the article. E.middlebrook (talk) 19:53, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
