Article overwriting
[edit]An editor has been persistently overwriting this article with their own version, removing the formatting painstakingly added by previous editors, adding completely unsourced information, using unencyclopedic language with multiple violations of the Wikipedia Manual of style as well as misspellings, poor punctuation, and turning the article into a personal memorial page. As this editor persistently reverts without edit summaries and refuses to discuss changes on the talk page, I will tag the article for the problems and in the meantime ask them to please read:
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies)
- Wikipedia:Citing sources
- Wikipedia:Neutral point of view
- Wikipedia:Conflict of interest

- That editor is User:Robmanrico, who tells us he's Robin Donald, the son of Donald Smith. Respect for one's late father is a noble thing, but I agree that that cannot excuse the damage he's done to the article. He needs to stop, then learn the ways of Wikipedia before resuming. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:53, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
- Someone should revert the current version. I tried to get rid of the most recent overwrite it once today but was immediately re-reverted without an edit summary, and one revert's my limit in these cases. Even so, this pre-overwrite version is still full of unreferenced content with a completely inappropriate tone and needs a lot of copyediting. Smith was a distinguished singer who is ill-served by the current shoddy and unencyclopedic version. Voceditenore (talk) 12:21, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks. It's much improved, or should I say re-improved. The article is still pretty deficient referencing-wise, though. There's nothing to verify the various anecdotes and content about his childhood and wartime experiences. Nor are there any reviews of his work which could verfify the somewhat extravagant claims in the lede. They may well be true, but they need some independent source to support it. Of the 7 inline cites, one is a dead link, two are to the same posting on a forum, two are to sites selling his recordings, and the remaining 2 simply verify that he received an OBE and that he sang in the first concert of the SOH but with no biographical information.
