More Info/Less Bias?
[edit]All the content in this article appears to be quoted verbatim from Dignity Village's website. We could use some information on Dignity Village from outside their own website. And we certainly shouldn't be copying words from another source. --mountainfire 15:48, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
- In doing some research on Portland, I came across the Dignity Village site, and on further research, this Wiki entry. I found their story compelling and very relevant not only to the city of Portland, but internationally as a candid snapshot of modern Amerca. I have no connections to Dignity Village, and I think I can say that I probably do not share many of the group's political opinions. I do, however, think that this tenacious group of grass-roots activists is notable and worthy of mention in a comprehensive encyclopedia.
- I will submit some changes and hopefully help set this entry on a scholarly path that is not a promotional pamphlet, written from an independent outside perspective, but with plenty of "inside perspective" from the many local resources publicly available. I am sure there will be plenty of opportunity to edit what I add - especailly spelling wise - but I am sure it will take the entry onto firm ground so it can be built on. Bias: As of tonight, this community has one shower. One shower for 60 people. Not showers. In a neighborhood? The city of Portland settled them in abutment of the city's main public composting facility, which has lead to several residents developing chronic respiratory conditions. I think this article needs an independent researcher to go down there and tell the True story. As it stands, this article is so sanitized it made me queasy. Maybe I'll do the research... Nodmonk (talk) 08:15, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
With regard to the "bias", I have been there several times and have found it impossible to gain permission to take pictures or video on the situation there because an outfit portrayed as their "media partner" has some sort of lock on public relations. That has put severe restrictions on any outside advocacy for assistance to those people or further publicity. They will "accept" help from anyone, as long as only Kwamba and those associated with Kwamba make the final decisions on who takes any credit or makes any public statements about it. Kwamba has been squatting a lockdown on media rights there for ten years now, supposedly to protect their existing footage that is supposedly being spliced to make a documentary film. It is a fact that "checking in" at their main gatehouse mainly serves the purpose of verifying that you have been told the limitations on contact with the people there, pictures, videos or length of stay. There are several individuals and groups willing to construct a regular campground bathroom and shower facility on that site but the city is demanding thousands of dollars of up front money before "allowing" any construction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.22.122.119 (talk) 20:40, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
Remove "stub" reference?
[edit]I'm thinking that the current version, while leaving a lot of room for improvement and addition, is enough to remove the "stub" reference.
Agreed? --VanBrigglePottery 04:29, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- I just did. :) An expansion template {{expansion}} could be added if people feel the need. Katr67 22:49, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Jack Tafari?
[edit]Why was the reference to Jack Tafari removed from the article? There is extensive Dignity Village material at his article. Am I missing something? Katr67 01:36, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- Looks like the original was restored. Mr. Tafarti's involvement with Camp Dignity does seem to be noteworthy to me. He is an internationally known homeless activist and the initial driving force behind the foundation of Dignity Village. The model he helped establish is being considered in other areas of the country, and even England. VanBrigglePottery 21:31, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
Jack Tafari was apparently evicted or voted out of the village a few years after it was established, and it is unclear whether the removal of his name was by his consent, or against his wishes but apparently the place has long been known for internal political power struggles, with most of the original founding members driven out, not elevated to permanently housed status. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:1C2:400:C200:C0C2:58D5:BEDE:46AB (talk) 05:28, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Remove "source" reference?
[edit]I've added many references to source material for this article. I'm thinking the additions may be enough to remove the "source" reference.
Agreed?

- Thank you for adding the sources. I'm going to do some cleanup of the references, to make the reference style closer to the preferred one. (Ultimately it should have full citations, as produced by using citation templates.) Please read up on citation styles here. Thanks and happy editing. P.S. Don't forget to sign your posts with 4 tildes. Katr67 12:23, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for cleaning tht up, Katr67! I'll try to read and follow style guides more carefully when editing in the future! VanBrigglePottery 21:30, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. BTW, the Dignity Village website seems to be down. Do you know if that's temporary? Because if those links have gone dead they should be removed from the article. Katr67 21:46, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know about their web site. I just went out there today to take pictures for the Wikipedia entry (just got back) - I met and got the email address for one of their outreach people. I will ask him. I imagine it is a temporary thing and will be back up. VanBrigglePottery 00:52, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
I got a response on the DV web page. It is temporarily down. 24.21.110.7 20:23, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Verifiability
[edit]I have removed some of the contents which cited CNN, because the CNN source didn't support the things that was said in article body which referenced the source. There was no reference to Tafari or any discussion of confrontation with the police in the source. Graywalls (talk) 20:20, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
