Onion, garlic and red lentils

[edit]

In some parts (or throughout the country?) of India onion, garlic and red lentils are also considered non-vegetarian. If any dish (including meat) is prepared as an offering to a deity then it is cooked without using these items. In Bengal it is common to offer dishes prepared with meat (generally goat's meat) to Goddess Kali. In some strict Bengali families it is also prohibited to have chicken and hen's egg. It is better if somebody writes on it along with proper citations. -Trinanjon Basu (talk) 10:32, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have you any citations? ThanksSHp.s the reason why they are vetatertarians is because they worship cows so they cant eat beef--86.152.243.161 (talk) 19:27, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Non-Vegetarian Hindus

[edit]

The present version of the article says -

"Contrary to popular belief, India is not a predominantly vegetarian country, according to recent census data as of 2004."

And the given reference for the above line is : http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/ . However nowhere in the given link is anything related to vegetarianism or 2004 census! Hence I am deleting this line. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajshree.jk (talkcontribs) 05:11, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rajshree. The citation given is here and does, at great length, discuss India's eating habits. This is a reliable source and as such the statement has been reinstated (by Betty Logan). Should you wish to amend this statement, you will also need to provide a reliable source with your counter argument. Nikthestoned 17:14, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Nikthestoned. Thanks SH 18:14, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification needed in this section. The first sentence goes as "contrary to popular belief ... not predominantly vegetarian." but near the end of the section, it says "their relative demographic predominance over some non-vegetarian". Something can not be a popular belief and a fact at the same time. Maybe the first should be "not exclusively". Another issue is the wording "India is not a predominantly vegetarian". this is not the discussed topic here. the article is about hindus, not india in general. muslims eat meat, and are the second largest religious group in india. this part is too cloudy and too vague, the reader can't work out how predominant vegetarianism is, and how frequent meat eating is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.21.48.174 (talk) 09:27, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with 178.21.48.174. This section should be rewritten with more clarity. "DrYouMe"→"Mrt3366" (Talk?) 21:59, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree vegetarianism was introduced by Jains and is not a Hindu concept. Unfortunately many other cultures have influenced Hinduism when other tribes/ cultures converted to Hinduism and they have diluted Hinduism into its current form. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.97.221.147 (talk) 07:48, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Merge

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to merge Hindu dietary law into Diet in Hinduism Betty Logan (talk) 01:51, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please add your opinions here. Thanks SH 13:41, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merge what and where to? There is a four step process for proposing merges, which you can follow at Wikipedia:Merging#Proposing_a_merger. Betty Logan (talk) 22:59, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Betty, I have added the page it should be merged with. Thanks SH 10:00, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the second merge tag. It looked that there were two separate proposals, one to merge Hindu dietary law into this article and another to merge this article into Hindu dietary law! I would support merging Hindu dietary law into this article, as it seems to be a large and relevant subtopic of Diet in Hinduism and there is a lot of overlap. -- Q Chris (talk) 11:38, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question is now who will do it? SH 08:57, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Usually the proposer! -- Q Chris (talk) 09:26, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not very good at merging. I did it once before and made a hash of it. Thanks SH 15:24, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can perform the merge i.e. transferring the material, sorting out the licenses and redirects etc, but it's not a topic I'm familiar with. One the material is in the article it will need copy-editing to properly integrate it. Betty Logan (talk) 01:51, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Meat eating and WP:RS

[edit]

@Jonathansammy: I have looked at the Harris source and Hindu newspaper opinion piece. These are not WP:RS for a contentious, well studied topic such as "cow or animal slaughter" and about meat being a part of diet in Hinduism. The old stable article already states that there are Hindus who eat meat, and "Dalit" etc angle you are trying to insert from non-RS, misleads because the WP:RS do not imply just "Dalit" eat meat. Let us discuss and gain consensus. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 15:55, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article Content

[edit]

I think this article gives too much weight on dietary laws in the ancient Hindu scriptures than on contemporary Hindu diet. Please comment.Thanks.Jonathansammy (talk) 16:25, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pork

[edit]

Is pork commonly eaten by non-vegetarian Hindus in India? -- Beland (talk) 15:13, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Intro is not very clear

[edit]

It says:

Many Hindus prefer a vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian lifestyle ... The diet of many Hindus includes eggs, fish or certain other meat

So, many are vegetarians, and yet many eat meat? What actually is this supposed to be telling us? 2A00:23C5:4B91:AB00:212D:DC64:69D:2E53 (talk) 01:05, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
