Hi, I'll be taking this on. Full review to follow, but my immediate note is that the plot summary is excessively detailed and needs be edited down considerably, if you want something to get started on. Morgan695 (talk) 05:44, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Gabriel Yuji: Initial review below. There are sections that need work before this nomination can move forward. Please ping me with nay questions you have. Morgan695 (talk) 20:48, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
Basic GA criteria
[edit]- Well written: the prose is clear and concise.
- Well written: the spelling and grammar are correct.
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for lead sections.
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for article structure and layout.
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for words to watch.
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for writing about fiction
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for list incorporation
- Complies with the MOS guidelines for use of quotations
- All statements are verifiable with inline citations provided.
- All inline citations are from reliable sources, etc.
- Contains a list of all references in accordance with the layout style guideline.
- No original research.
- No copyright violations or plagiarism.
- Broad in its coverage but within scope and in summary style.
- Neutral.
- Stable.
- Illustrated, if possible.
- Images are at least fair use and do not breach copyright.
- Lede
- I feel like the second and first paragraphs should be reversed, i.e. lead with the drier information about who directed/produced it, that it is based on an existing media franchise, and then describe the plot
- Agreed.
puberty, sexuality, sex, love and LGBT were
LGBT what? LGBT identity, LGBT acceptance, etc?- Good point. It was written as "Puberty, sexuality, sex, love and LGBT themes were" before a copyedit. But I've added identity for now.
spawned a meme over the Devilmen's running-style and its remix of the 1970s anime theme song
Seems like extraneous detail for lede- Reworded.
Its viewership numbers are unknown since Netflix does not disclose them but many journalists considered it a hit
Rephrase with formal/encyclopedic language- I don't know hwo this is unencyclopedic since it is a simply statement ("Its viewership numbers are unknown since Netflix does not disclose them") followed by another statement attributed to journalists, not granted as a fact.
- Synopsis – Context
- This section needs to be overhauled completely. It assumes the reader possesses a level of knowledge of Devilman as a franchise, and is incomprehensible to the lay reader. It should broadly talk about how Devilman is based on an existing property and Yuasa’s inspirations in the broadest possible strokes. The majority of the info here needs to be integrated into sections further down the article once plot/characters have been established, or removed completely.
- Ok. Moved down.
The anime uses rappers as a substitute for the original delinquents. Some episodes feature extended rap sequences performed by professional rappers. The director said he made this change because he believes "rappers are the people who speak what's on their minds today
This as the second sentence in the body of the article, with no context provided for who “the original delinquents” are or why they matter. It makes no sense to the lay reader. Integrate elsewhere or remove entirely- Ok. Moved down.
features rapid text messages
Needs more context/explanation- Well, that's kind of just that. They type their reactions to the demons and that's 21st century-y. Tried to made it learer.
The series takes place in a universe in which the 1970s Devilman TV series exists, its theme song appears as a child's ringtone, and the bedroom of one of the children is filled with Devilman anime objects.
This is essentially just trivia, integrate elsewhere or remove- While I'm inclined to agree, I'll mantain it right now and will think about it more later.
- Synopsis – Plot
- Needs to be cut down significantly. It is currently 941 words; should be around 500 words per MOS:TVPLOT. Will provide notes once section has been edited.
- I'll work on it.
- Voice Cast
- I assume there’s a reason why certain characters don’t have English language voice actors listed, but it’s not immediately clear. Can you please explain?
- I just assumed they were not credited. But I'll check it.
- Production and release
- Looks good.
- Themes and analysis
- See "Reception – Critical reception"
- Episode List
- Is there an official anime website that this information can be cited to?
- Not really. The official website (https://devilman-crybaby.com/) doesn't even provide the titles. It's not difficult to cite the Japanese titles, though, but the same is not true to the English titles and crew (which of course are available on Netflix, but I don't think it is a good idea to use it as a source).
- Reception – Audience response
Devilman Crybaby's announcement created some hype
Rephrase to avoid WP:WEASEL- Reworded. However, the sources say it "generate[d] a frenzied otaku reaction" (Otaku USA) and created "hype, the anticipation" (Chrunchyroll), so the sources provide "a vague or ambiguous claim"
- Link to first mention of sources specifically named (Syfy, The Japan Times, etc)
- I prefer to link only once in the article per WP:OVERLINK; both examples are already linked in "Themes and analysis"
The devilmen running-style
should “devilmen” be capitalized?- Since I've did in "Plot" I think it's coherent.
- Reception – Critical reception
- Both this section and "Themes and analysis" are suffering from serious WP:OVERQUOTE; the article presently does not pass Earwigs copyvio check due to overquoting. Per MOS:TVRECEPTION, reviews should be paraphrased as much as possible, and not just quoted wholesale. I also think the "Themes and analysis" section would benefit greatly from subheadings. Please ping me when these sections are revised and I will review.
- I'll work on it.
Thanks for the review, Morgan695. I'm a little busy right now, but I'll work on it on the following days. Gabriel Yuji (talk) 06:35, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Morgan695: Trimmed down "Plot", and revised both "Themes and analysis" and "Critical reception". Gabriel Yuji (talk) 07:39, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- The lede and plot summary could still be tightened up, but I decided to just be bold and do it myself. This passes GA review. Morgan695 (talk) 18:49, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
