I deleted some part of it since it was turning into a strategy guide like material, which is not the purpose of this article. Lethalwiki 06:21, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Survival Horror?

I do not personally believe that Devil May Cry belongs in the Survival Horror Genre, as DMC lacks some major points of Survival Horror. ___________________________________________________

1. "Though most commonly associated with the Resident Evil mechanics described above, games where the player is made to feel underpowered, generally fighting alone for the bulk of the game, with limited supplies (especially ammunition and health (hence "survival"). Survival horror game

Dante (The Main Character) is by far not underpowered against the regular enemies. Boss Battle are not counted. His guns have unlimited ammunition, but all medical items are limited.

2. "Other games such as the Doom and Alien versus Predator series include horror elements, but give the player a sense of being very powerful. Such games are not typically considered survival horror because the "survival" aspect is not present. Survival horror game

I consider that DMC is situated in the same category as Doom and AvP. They all include elements of survival horror, but at the same time give the player a character who is not considered to be "weak". DMC does have a certain element of "Survival" in the game, but it does not play a major role as it does in Resident Evil or Alone in the Dark, for example.

3 "The game also features some puzzle-solving and exploration elements retained from its survival-horror beginnings, but these are downplayed; Devil May Cry puts emphasis on action." Devil May Cry

The Wikipedia Article clearly states that DMC has all the characteristics of a Survival Horror Game and even a history, as it was originally meant to be a Survival Horror game, But its emphasis is clearly on enjoyable (this can be debated) action. Therefore it cannot be counted as a Survival Horror game.

4"However, in prototype status, it proved to be too different from the Resident Evil series and the survival horror genre in general." Devil May Cry

This is the final point. Even though it is borrowed from the original wikipedia Article (I dont know how "legal" that is in this kind of a debate, but I'll try.) it clearly states that it was "too different" from the original concept of a "Resident Evil" game and from the genre in total. ___________________________________________________

I also did a bit of search on the web:

  • IGN does not specify the genre, but it does not comment it as a "Survival Horror Game" in its Review or Game Page

___________________________________________________

That is it. The "Survival Horror" part should be removed from the game description and DMC should be removed from the Survival horror game article. Arctic-Editor 17:05, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Note: This was originally in the |Survival Horror Game Talk Page. I decided to move it here also. Arctic-Editor 17:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Dante's Appearance

"Considering their striking resemblance, Dante was most likely an early Leon prototype as well, but this has not been confirmed."

I'm sure it would be much more efficient to swap this out for the fact that Dante himself bears more than a slight resemblance to Vash of Trigun. As a matter of fact, I seem to recall Mikami stating him as an influence for this character design back in 2001 before the game was released. But because I can not produce a link as some sort of irrefutable proof, I leave this up to the masses to decide.

It was Kamiya who made the game and decided Dante's looks, not Mikami (who was only the producer here). Dante was modeled after the manga character Cobra. Also, Dante was always meant to be a new character and not Leon (the RE4 build that became DMC was part of an unrelated project from the later GameCube builds with Leon). You can read more about it from the following page. http://darkwinds.net/tyrant/tempsreport.htm

DMC2 and 3

I'm deleting the information on Devil May Cry 2 and 3; these have their own pages, which are more than sufficent.
Bobquest3 20:45, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
That's fine, just make sure you somehow add the information of the sequels in this article into their own articles.

Suggestion

I dont know much on the series so i wont try to do it, but how bout a section on the weapons as they usually have many illusions to mythology/Divine comedy, just saying it should be done, perhaps 168.16.190.72 01:52, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Luce&Ombra

I didn't read this article, but someone tried to start an article of the above title with this text:

Luce&Ombra are the two handguns used by the legendary dark knight character in the video game series "Devil may Cry" by capcom ltd. A popular belief is that the legendary dark knight is a actually Sparda, demonic father of the games two main characters, Dante and Virgil. It may also be Dante, because he is the one of the two brothers that uses handguns, while virgil thinks they are unfit for a true warrior. Some fans speculate that luce and obero were given to Dante by thier father, Sparda.

It's clearly not enough to warrant it's own separate article, so I did a redirect to here. I'm not an expert on this material, so I hope someone who is can throw this in if it's not already. Bobak 00:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Versus Director?

Wasn't the director the DMC 3 somehow related to the "Versus" movie? I remember seeing that somewhere.

Nightmare (Devil May Cry) merge

Nightmare (Devil May Cry) is probably not notable enough for its own article; any useful content should be merged here and the article redirected here as well. --AbsolutDan (talk) 04:30, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

i agree somebody merge it on in here f1r3r41n 17:19, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
Totally. It makes no sense getting its own page. ReignInTiki 02:52, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Agree The article does not have enough information to deem it worthy of its own article. Mushrambo 02:37, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Agree! Maybe a page for Devil May Cry enemies/bosses should be made? --Havermayer 00:51, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

How about a page referring to Mallet Island, where Devil May Cry takes place, and its denizens (enemies/bosses), similar to the Temen-ni-gru page for Devil May Cry 3? --Endrian 20:10, July 31 2006

Typographical Errors

Found a few blatant typos. The sentence in question: "Devil May Cry is now becoming a film , which sloud be comeing out in 2007 or 2008." ...Fixing them. --Aruukun 00:10, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Actually, looks like the information in question didn't even accurately fit the source. Changing it to accurately represent the source until a new one is found. --Aruukun 00:16, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

This is the first time I've written a comment or discussion point, and I am not a registered user, so forgive the lack of formalities, but there is some quite appaulling grammar in the "Difficulties" section under "Easy Automatic" (begins with "you dont"). Also, I don't believe that the summary at the top needs the information about a Japanese animation spin off. -- 17:41, 11 October 2006 (BST)

Movie News

User 72.75.51.178 seems to be editing the article (specifically the part about the movie) with uncited information. Needless to say, the additions also do NOT meet quality standards. What the user posted can be found here: "Roumrs say that David S. Goyer From the maker of Blade And Blade II, may writte and produced Devil May Cry Flim. The Movie the film will more than likely receive a R rating."

Until the user can cite where he or she recieves information, I don't think this should be part of the article --Aruukun 20:04, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. --Endrian 20:17, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Episodic DMC would be good

I think DMC should have a series of episodic games aswell and I've thought of a title named 'Devil May Cry: Ladies' it follows the Ladies of DMC's stories before or after the game that they're in. Episode 1: Trish, Episode 2: Lucia and Episode 3: Lady. resembling episodic games such as Half-Life they could also be available in expansion packs (Vergil could have his own}

Is there a reliable source to back up the claims that DMC started off as a result of Capcom experimenting with the Resident Evil franchise?

Vandalism

Thank you Mrpsychic for getting rid of the vandalism. L337p4wn 20:02, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Deleted Pages

Why are some pages about Devil May Cry series missing and the url redirecting to the games´ pages even when there are no in-deep information? Like Mundus´s one? Is there a group rebuilding articles for Devil May Cry category? Thanks. Cris Spiegel 22:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Novel summaries?

I just cleaned them up a bit, but do we even need them here? They're spin-off products, more appropriate for a page that deals with the entire series and related media. What's the point of wedging them in between the gameplay rankings and the game trivia section? --Boradis 19:50, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

What does it mean?

Does "Devil May Cry" mean anything? Except for the obvious, is it somekind of expression?

In series canon, it seems to refer to some saying in lore that suggests "Even a devil may cry if... <insert something emotional here>". I believe it was a phrase fabricated by the staff and chosen because it sounded cool. Hyperspacey 08:11, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
It does echo the actual phrase devil may care, though. --82.45.43.197 19:44, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
It is probibaly related to the fact that Dante names his Demon hunting service Devil May Cry. It also might be explained on the back of the box...

" And If you succeed, the Devil May Cry" refering to Dante's quest. Quatreryukami 15:54, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of gamerwiki-centric content

Much of this article goes into great depth about orbs, rankings, skills and suchlike, which would IMO fit better in a Gamerwiki. I'm going to delete the offending prose if people don't raise an objection- those wishing to migrate it to a Gamerwiki will be able to retrieve it via History. Hyperspacey 08:11, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

No objections here. Makes perfect sense to me. I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of gamers who come to Wikipedia (myself included (sometimes)) would like a collaborative wiki that embraced fancruft and every last detail about their favorite games. --Boradis 18:56, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Agreed, that's what strategywiki was made for. QuagmireDog 09:55, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Userbox

Someone make a DMC userbox! I would, but I don't know how and I don't know what a good picture would be. Maybe E&I?

That's a good idea. I don't know how to either. I agree that E&I make a good image. You should learn how to sign your posts. --Boradis 07:51, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
My bad. Lord GS-41 23:51, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

We need a new "Devil May Cry (Series)" article

I've just yanked a bunch of info from here that would be better suited to an article on the series as a whole. We need to avoid confusion on this page, and keep it focused on the first game, rather than summarizing the later releases. I know there used to be a "DMC (Series)" page that somehow morphed into being about the unreleased mobile phone game "Devil May Cry: Deadshot", but I think it needs to be revived and used as the central repository for series info. And possibly as a central discussion page for DMC editors. Or should that be somewhere else? --Boradis 18:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Rewrote Storyline

Now it actually covers all the game's events. I removed the spoiler tags, because anyone reading a section called Plot knows what they're in for when they start reading. Anyway, I'm aware of just how long it is. I'll take a run at shortening it tomorrow, as I figured it'd be easier to just remove and/or condense text which exists rather than try to add more information. And since it's 2:20 where I am right now, I'm going to go crash. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee06:13, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Boy, this could be like 1/4 to 1/5 as long. As it is, the plot summary here is about the same length as that of the entire The Lord of the Rings. I'll take a whack at it with my little axe. --Boradis 07:59, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Lanky, I cut this down, but seriously, it still should not be this long. It shouldn't recap boss fights for one thing. There are only three characters in the story that matter, Dante, Trish and Mundus. Frankly, I think the one-paragraph version that you replaced (though that needed work) was much closer to the Wikipedia ideal than this. --Boradis 08:18, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I would argue that including the boss fights adds context to the plot. Additionally, Griffon is a relatively important part of the game's story (even if he doesn't get many spoken lines) because of his interactions with Dante and eventual destruction at Mundus' hands. Per the chop you did, we go from Dante facing Nelo Angelo a first time, to a third time (with no mention of the second), to Trish betraying Dante after having not been in the game since the introduction. I'll probably restore the original rewrite I did and chop it down from there. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee12:09, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Update: Okay, I went through and shortened the original version of the plot rewrite I did last night. I've managed to trim it down to 571 words, which is not at all bad when compared to the Devil May Cry 2's plot section which is 563 words. This one still manages to hit all of the relevant plot points. I'm sure it could be shortened a touch more in places but I'm comfortable with the current length, now. Cheers, Lankybuggerspeaksee13:58, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I just re-redid it, and you'll notice I left out any mention of Griffon or Nightmare. Here's why: The purpose of Griffon's death scene is to show how much of a d*** Mundus is, which is why that scene is in the game -- it's character exposition for Mundus and motivation for Dante to kick his butt. But that's not the job of a plot summary. A summary just summarizes. The characters that matter are Dante, Trish, Nelo/Vergil, and Mundus. In a summary it's enough to simply state that Dante's the hero, Trish is the femme fatale, Nelo is Dante's nemesis, and Mundus is the villain. Phantom is only significant for introducing the recurring enemy theme, so mentioning him further explains the game to the reader of this article. Griffon, on the other hand, is just canon fodder, like a big marionette, and his death scene only repeats what we already know -- Mundus is a d*** and Dante is honorable. Nightmare isn't even canon fodder, it's just an obstacle -- just a ... a wacky hell machine? Oh, good name for a band. Copyright! :) --Boradis 11:28, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Am I the only one who finds the Review Numbers table ugly?

By the FA guidelines this appears to be a matter of taste, but I really think that the table looks ugly. Prose handles it just fine, and if anyone wants to see the numbers associated with the reviews it's easy enough to follow the links to the metacritic, Rotton Tomatos, etc. Cheers, LankybuggerYell20:01, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

It's so-so, not really cute but... if it satisfices his concerns and he removes his opposision from the featured article nomination then let it be, however I think it should be smaller. 20:07, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Maybe reduce it to just the Metacritic, Game Rankings, and Rotten Tomatoes listings? Cheers, LankybuggerYell20:22, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Actually, it doesn't satisfy my concerns at the FAC. I was going to write an explanation there but didn't have time before going out. I added the table in to remove short snappy worthless sentences such as "Edge scored it 8, Rotten Tomatoes says Fresh". I took the table idea from other gaming FAs, such as Wind Waker and Halo: Combat Evolved. Personally, I wouldn't include Rotten Tomatoes ratings in the article at all, but seeming as you guys thought it pertinent, I moved it to the table. I also removed the EGM rating, being that EGM give it three seperate scores in a Famitsu style cross review. Claiming it got 8.8 is pretty depends on how whatever secondary source your using it calculates the reviews. I know that Metacritic does NOT take an average. I'm going to put in the Metacritic and Gamerankings scores in the table again, I hope you don't mind, but I like a hard and fast score guide in the table and in depth stuff in the prose. - hahnchen 22:55, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

9 out of ten

it seems queer, to me at least, in the review section, "9 out of ten" score is used repeatedly. why not 9 out of 10, or nine out of ten? Chensiyuan 21:13, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

furthermore, some game reviewers are italicised but some are not. also, gamespot is italicised at some point and not italicised at another. Chensiyuan 07:10, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, sorry for that; a lot of work and little time, it was made in a hasty moment anyway now all of them are italized. 07:24, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

on another issue, i thought there used to be two screenshots? what happened to the other one? Chensiyuan 10:36, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Boradis removed it while improving the article I will reinstall it before someone complains about it being image-less-

Oop, my bad. Apologies! --Boradis 22:25, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Images

The plot section looks a bit too... monochromatic. Any suggestions for images we could acquire for it? Some possibilities:

  • Acquisition of Alastor
  • Encounter with Phantom
  • Unmasking of Nelo as Vergil
  • Transformation of FE into the Sparda
  • Dante uses Sparda DT
  • "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with liiiiiight!!!"
  • DMC1 Jackpot

Any comments? --Warp L. Obscura 15:01, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Also, I was wondering if the current screenshots could be improved.

I cannot remember ATM, but were there any panoramic "shots" of Mallet like with the one of Temen-ni-Gru used in the DMC3 article?

I believe too that a screenshot displaying the DT runes and Style Ranking word would be more informative than the HUD-less current image of Dante firing on the Mari. Perhaps attempt to get an frame where you can see Dante's DT in action, given that the DT for DMC1 did not have a permanent cosmetic change for its duration, like with 2 and 3, but "flickered" on and off. --Warp L. Obscura 15:13, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Suggested image: [[Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg -->|thumb|200px|left|Dante combats an enemy. Note the Devil Trigger gauge, Red Orb counter and Style Ranking.]] I believe it is more informative as it displays DT in use, DT gauge, Red Orb counter and SSStyle Ranking, as opposed to the interface-less current one of Dante shooting the Mari.

Any comments? --Warp L. Obscura 11:51, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

I definitely agree on that gameplay screenshot, and I think it should replace the one without the HUD, which looks like promotional art anyhow. Related to that, what is that current top image in the gameplay section? Is that from a Secret Mission, or one of the regular missions with a countdown clock? On the other suggestions, I like the Dante/Phantom one the best. A shot giving a good feel for their size differences and Dante's nonchalant scoffing would show the reader the first boss mentioned in the article, as well as a good idea of who Dante is and the kinds of situations he deals with. The others are more strictly illustrative. --Boradis 20:49, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
That one is pretty good, and to the customer what he wants here is a screenshot of Nelo unmasked I will also upload one with Dante and Phantom.
- 23:11, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Let's see, let's see.

I'll be uploading more soon, guys, just pick the ones you think that work. --Alexlayer 00:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Remember! The point of images on Wikipedia, indeed the point of Wikipedia, is to inform, not to entertain or amuse. Each image needs to convey information that is impossible or difficult or tedious to put into words -- a reason beyond looking good. It can end up looking like a fan site if we put in images of our favorite scenes because they look cool. We don't want that, it's the sort of thing that gets Featured Articles de-listed. Good image usage in the DMC pages include the better screenshot discussed above (it shows the gameplay we describe in action), the Dante/Phantom scene I already dicsussed, and Dante's image at the top of his article. I don't see much solid information in the suggestions made above. Sorry to sound like a party pooper. --Boradis 01:27, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
You know, I'm actually starting to think the page is getting a little image-heavy. All I'd do at this point is replace the two screenshots in Gameplay with the HUD image and the Phantom image and leave it at that. The development sketch is a great addition though. But we don't want the images to become like a trivia section. --Boradis 01:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Exactly my point that's why my choices were Nelo unmasked (important to the plot he does hold the key to hell) and Phantom and Dante, now leave Phantom and Dante here and I will put Nelo unmasked at Vergil's page. - 01:35, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, I think that'll be just fine. Hope that I helped ^^U --Alexlayer 02:03, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

hihi

hi my name is roseanne ferraro and i am doing a project on devil may cry and i would like a few pointers please thanx for your help from roseanne ferraro
