Peak Enrollment

[edit]

What was DPS's peak enrollment? I've been looking for a history of enrollment for DPS, but can't find a list, anywhere. I think this would be an important and interesting chart to have on this page. --Criticalthinker (talk) 07:54, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fleming Elementary, Hmong, and its fate

[edit]

I found these sources:

So Fleming Academy/Elementary and Osborne High School had a large Hmong population

Fleming's boundaries were:

Now Fleming's former area is served by Scott Elementary - The parkland is not in the Scott zone but everything else that was the Fleming zone is now the Scott K-8 elementary zone

Middle boundaries:

Osborne still exists.

Snippet on charter schools

[edit]

This page is on semi-protected so I'm hoping someone can cut the POV out of section on charter schools, which reads as an ad for University Prep High School. The part that needs to be removed for sure is the part making the claim that they pay for a student's ACT. All public schools in Michigan require that juniors take the ACT, this is not unique to this school. --35.16.35.141 (talk) 17:47, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

School brochures and documents in other languages

[edit]

The presence of brochures and documents in other languages specific to particular may indicate which non-English speaking groups are most prevalent at particular schools:

Spanish (these schools are in Southwest Detroit unless when otherwise stated):

Bengali:

Arabic:

In addition the Davison Elementary webpage (Archive) says the school has Arab, Bangladeshi, Polish, and African-American students. The Gardner Elementary webpage (Archive) says the school has Arab, African-American, White, and Hispanic students. The Gardner School's English brochure (Archive) says the school has students from various countries, including the Dominican Republic, Iraq, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Palestine, Venezuela, and Yemen. The entry on the Priest school (Archive) states that most of the Arabs come from Yemen, and that there were also African-American and Romanian students, and students from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico.

Non-English forms (thread started in 2015)

[edit]

Here are some more non-English documents. In case somebody wants to translate info about DPS into Arabic, Bengali, Hmong, Romanian, and/or Spanish, these documents may help:

Enrollment forms from: http://detroitk12.org/resources/prospective_students/

Notice of interpretation and LEP services:

The webpage http://detroitk12.org/resources/parents/ - http://www.webcitation.org/6ZqX5v0ib - Also has a short "English – Language Assistance Services" paragraph in Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Romanian, and Hmong

Again, I'm making sure any Hmong documents are archived ASAP. Many Hmong have left Detroit and DPS may stop making Hmong documents (unless they somehow return to their former neighborhoods)

Renaissance 2012 documents

[edit]

Index The reason I'm archiving these is to:

  • Get records of old attendance zones
  • Get documents in other languages so people who are not sure what words to use when translating things have references available. For example if people trying to translate this article ask "what is "charter school" in Bengali/Hmong/Romanian/etc" they will get an answer. - The Bengali school closing article also has names of some schools in Bengali

2015 brochures in languages other than English

[edit]

The brochures of schools which have their own Wikipedia articles (Western International High School (Spanish), Detroit International Academy (Bengali), Academy of the Americas (Spanish)) are located in their respective talk pages

SPANISH: (DPS schools with Spanish speakers tend to be in Southwest Detroit)

These schools only have English brochures, but have websites in Spanish:

ARABIC and SPANISH: (these DPS schools are in southwestern and western Detroit, along the border of heavily Arab Dearborn)

BENGALI: (Davison is in the Banglatown shared with Hamtramck, and Burton is near the Bengali area)

WhisperToMe (talk) 13:20, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the 2012-2013 attendance maps (Elem, Mid, High) I will check the feeder patterns of these other-than-English student body schools.

  • Southwestern HS gets students from all of: Bennett ES, Clemente ES, Earhart ES-MS, Harms ES, Maybury ES, Neinas ES; parts of: Burton ES-MS, Munger MS (Southwestern HS does have Spanish brochures)
  • Northwestern HS gets students from all of: Priest MS; parts of: Burton ES-MS, Munger MS
  • King HS gets students from parts of: Burton ES-MS
  • Pershing HS gets students from all of: Davison ES-MS
  • Cody HS gets students from all of: Gardner ES

I do not see other-than-English brochures from the other zoned high schools WhisperToMe (talk) 15:36, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Section

[edit]

I removed the "Teacher Relations" subsection. It was written as current information, but every item in it was more than 10 years old, and one reference to financial matters was 12 years old. Since then the district has gone through seven years of a State appointed financial manager, starting in 2009, who has changed everything mentioned in the removed subsection. Just last month there were law suits in court about teachers striking, which is against the law, by calling in sick in a coordinated fashion, and this removed subsection had no mention of that. In fact it was obvious that no one had updated it in eight years. Right now the District is under an Outside Financial Manager, who will leave ten days from this writing.
